Who is destashing in 2010?

I try to do this all year, every year; usually a room a month, and clothing each season. But I have a problem with buying certain 'luxury items' (makeup, body products, candles), so this is my year of the "no-buy", wherein I can only replace staples for beauty items and 80% of all other stashes must be depleted before I bring another into the house.

I went through a couple of boxes- lots of it was able to be tossed. Now I'm trying to figure out a good filing system for articles, ideas, etc. The most obvious thing is 3 ring binders but I don't like the way they will look on the shelf. Thinking about file folders in a magazine file.

Trying to decide where to begin this weekend! The GORGEOUS weather we're having makes me feel motivated! It's like 44 and sunny which compared to the weather we've had before is like the bahamas!

Ugh! I had a stressful, yucky week. I accomplished nothing at home other than keeping the family up and going AND I'm sick of it being cold. Blech! That's inspiring, huh?!

But....in the morning...I'm going to see Alice in Wonderland in 3D! popcorn::
And the temps are supposed to start warming back up! So I promise I will get back on the wagon, instead of being dragged along behind it!

Delmar, thanks for responding to my one in/one out thing. I don't think it would work for me anyhow, but I really didn't have any particular thing in mind. I've just heard that saying quite a bit and wondered how it works when you have kids. I have currently instituted a policy that nothing is to come into the house unless it is consumable or absolutely needed or part of schoolwork.

I'm a long time lurker. Just wanted to say thank you to everyone on this thread. I need to destash big time! I have been working on it since the beginning of the year. I have sold stuff on Amazon, and on E-bay. I cannot wait for the weather to warm up here so I can have a great big garage sale. It feels so good to shed all this extra stuff. It was taking over my life! Now, I really think hard before I buy anything. I remind myself how hard I am working to get rid of stuff! I've come a long way, but have even longer yet to go. Thank you all for being an inspiration to me. I hope I can help someone, too!:goodvibes

I went thru my garage and basement in the last 2 weeks. Whew. It is like peeling the layers off an onion. I should go thru it again and peel off more I think, in the fall.

I tossed kids athletic trophies! Board games! My 30 year old (used and scratched up ) RECORD albums. One stumbling block for me, is finding places to take usable stuff. That takes extra time. Books, knickknacks, etc. It also takes extra time to arrange disposal of used computers, paint, "hazardous waste".

I get on a roll sometimes. And now I know where everything is, more or less, a bonus.

Realizations I have come to while destashing:

MOST of the clothes I am trying to fit back into, I wouldn't wear anymore anyway. I plan on keeping a few of them that I LOVE but the rest are going to goodwill, and when I lose weight I will treat myself to new stuff.
( I came to this realization because I finally HAVE lost a little weight and thought I had a wardrobe in the basement. Not so much.)

I'm never going to read this year's worth of back issues of fitness magazine, and if I DO read them, it's not going to make me skinny. If I need to reference them, most of 'em are online anyway.

If I used the scrapbooking stuff I've been saving from the mid-nineties on up, it would just end up looking like a scrapbook from the mid-nineties. Time for it to go.

I feel the same way. Tired of the cold. Plus, I'm just starting to feel like myself after a long bout with a sinus infection. Not tip top, but better. The kids have been sick too. The weather is nice and mild today, but I don't want to do too much and land back on square one. We all seem to have periods of feeling run down and some little spurts of energy. So we are kind of in rest/take it easy mode. Which is why I've slowed down quite a bit on destashing.

Love to know what you think about the Alice in Wonderland movie! Let us know! I'm kind of on the fence. And I'm a huge Alice fan.

The one in/one out concept sounds good, but hard to practice for me. I tried it, but I'm doing better concentrating on zones and not keeping up with what's coming in so much.

I have come to the same realizations about clothes. Some of those clothes were snug when I was at my lowest weight, so I would have a long way to go. The styles have changed and some of them I don't even like anymore.

So true about the magazines. I've gotten so I rarely read them and go straight for the websites anyway. But for some reason, I am holding onto old magazines too. :sad2: I just need to let them go!

I'm not having trouble letting things go, but I am concerned about finding JUST the right storage solutions for when it's all done. I have looked at Target, Land of Nod, Container Store, and Organized Living, as well as the local Dollar Tree.

Any suggestions of stores I am forgetting?

Hi -

Longtime lurker to this specific thread - but I've been reading it since Day One :goodvibes

My big step today was removing the table was placed right at the front door off my livingroom. It was moved there at Christmas-time to make room for the tree - and never went back to its original place.

Due to the proximity to the front door - it has become a "catch-all" for everything from mail, newspapers and magazines to gloves, scarves, and everything in-between. Lately I've been using it for a place to put things for future errands - packages that have to go to the Post Office or UPS, non-emergency things that have to go to the dry cleaner, etc.

This morning I cleared it off - went through all of the old mail and papers, put the gloves and scarves in their rightful place, went to the PO, UPS and the dry-cleaner.

A small step - but a step none-the-less :)

I do have to add that I liked having a table there so I could put my keys and pocketbook down when I come through the front door. I might take a trip to The Christmas Tree Shop tomorrow and see if I can find a small table that can be used for that purpose only. ;)

They make mail in/out with hooks organizers to hang near the door also. They're good for me because I'll put the mail there to grab in the morning (don't like leaving the outgoing mail in the box overnight) and to hang my car keys. I lose my keys a lot, so having a specific spot for them really helps.

I just got rid of another $50 bucks worth of kitchen stuff thanks to Craigslist! :woohoo:

Just sold another 35 comic books last night:cool1:

I can't wait until their all gone!!!

I really need to get more things organized and sorted but I need the space that my comics take up, so I have to sell the comics first so I have some room:confused3

:welcome: to everyone that has joined us in our pursuit of homes that are "destashed"! I know that I have a long road ahead of me and everyone on here is so awesome. One of the wonderful side effects for me about my destash is that I refuse to spend money to bring more things in and my bank account is starting to show a small difference. All of those little things I spent money on added up...a lot!

Most important to me is getting the stuff out of my home, but now that it is warmer, I am thinking about what I can sell. My treat for myself (and even more incentive) is that the money I make from the consignment sale, the yard sale, Craig's list, what have you, is going into my Disney fund! :woohoo: I just have to make sure I don't fall into the the trap of not selling it and then just having a bunch of sorted boxes. :rolleyes1

Comicguy, I just want to let you know I find you very inspiring. Every time that you post your sales, I go hmmm, I can make money too.

Are you going to change your user name to nomorecomicsguy or theuserformerlyknownascomicguy when you are done?

I am not making a lot but at least it is something (not to mention the space it frees up) and it all goes towards our WDW trips.:goodvibes

Thank you all for your inspiration.

I have been going through my basement tonight looking for some things to sell on amazon, ebay or at a garage sale if the weather ever improves around here.

I FOUND A $50 BILL!!!!!!!!!!:cool1:

Don't know how it happened, but it was stuck in with some wedding gifts.

I did find a couple things to list for sale as well. Now, I have motivation to keep going! Also found some things to complete the kids Easter baskets. Just need a few pieces of candy, and I am done.

It's SO frustrating that my de-stashing keeps getting interrupted by my
job! But in this economy I suppose I should just be grateful to have one!

As I destashed our house I threw everything that was homeless in a basement bedroom, and sorting through that has been a slower process. Progress IS being made though. This week I am going to go through a 'forgotten' space- cabinets above the washer and dryer.

Wow, thats alot - for how many items? Would you mind telling us what you're selling?
Are they bigger ticket items, like appliances? I've been donating all my kitchen stuff, not thinking it would sell but now I'm thinking twice! :)

That's me with DD's clothes. I have to get rid of to see what I got. We were able to bring up ALL the clothes from the basement at least. Now it's a matter of getting rid of and going through more boxes. Yes, can't wait til they are all gone. The same with toys and books.
