Who is destashing in 2010?

I donated another large bag of clothes today. A few things I paused over, but thought I haven't worn these things in a long, long time. There is a reason (not my color, tired of the pattern, doesn't fit) once I thought of that, it was easier to let it all go.

After tonight, the first round of destashing the upstairs will be DONE. I just have to fill out a few rebate forms that are sitting on my desk and get them in the mail.

This is my dilemma. I've gone through each room one at a time, and cleared out the clutter. Stuff to be donated went in the basement so I can itemize it before taking it to Goodwill. That's also always been our miscellaneous storage area.

Now, I like the organization upstairs (our primary living area) so much that I want to do even MORE organizing. I can't decide whether to go ahead and get the basement cleared out, or do more organizational stuff UPSTAIRS. Yuck. Oh well- the end results are so wonderful, I don't mind it SO much. I think I'm going to make my goals for the weekend-

1.Clean out the car (some misc. stuff has accumulated there too)
2.Get those rebates mailed.
3. Get all the laundry done so I can re-organize the closet AGAIN. I went through and got rid of all the stuff that didn't fit properly or didn't get worn. Organization books say to try organizing by color, so I'm going to try it, just to see what happens.

I notice our momentum has slowed down...and we aren't even through January!!! Come on everybody, it's the weekend and We can DO it!

I WAS losing steam, but vow to get back on track. I WILL clean out my bedroom closet this weekend. It really wont take too long, it's not that bad and was done last year too, so most extra things are already gone. Keep it up everyone!:yay:

I finally got the tupperware destashed. Plus another couple of donation bags ready to go.

DH worked on destashing under our bed last night and found a bunch of stuff that can go. Plus he let go of some more books and he'll take those over half priced books to see what they'll give him for them.

I'm waffling on whether to destash the kids' play food. They have a large rubbermaid bin that holds it all but it also attracts a ton of clutter since it has no lid.

Also I'm thinking I could let the school desk go since it doesn't really fit anyplace and I've got it out in the garage now. YDD needs a desk but something much more streamlined and with drawers.

I got rid of more paper wed night (not sure if I posted that or not) but I only have 1 more bag of papers to deal with and then it's just trying to maintain. (which I'm not good at! LOL)

Almost all our fleece found a home in the Project Linus GAD blankets. I still have enough fleece to make around 5-6 smaller blankets and 3 bigger ones but the big pieces don't match together so I'll have to figure something out.
I may just make up some smaller lovie type blankets and donate them to the women's shelter. It was very relaxing making the GAD blankets and I had forgotten how much I enjoyed making those in the past.

I'll be destashing our 2 strollers and all 3 carseats during the BRU trade in sale. I'm getting the 3 younger ones Britax frontiers. (trading in 2 graco boosters and our Britax marathon) Plus one of DH's cousins is having her first baby so perfect timing to get her a good gift for her baby shower w/ one of the stroller trade ins. ;)

I just need to figure out whether to trade in our 'Disney' stroller (they're trashing everything that gets traded in so I don't feel guilty that it's filthy from the blacktop) and then sell the Zooper to OUAC (if they'll take it since some pieces are in our OL in FL) or just turn in both strollers and keep one of the boosters so DH has 3 in his car.

DH only has backless boosters in his car which I don't like but I'm not buying 6 frontiers! :scared1:

Here's a question for you...would you get rid of a nut roaster that hasn't ever been used and has lived in your pantry for at least 2yrs? :rolleyes1
I have this feeling as soon as I get rid of it, DH will go looking for it to use it!

also random question, what would you do with a bunch of pads? I don't use them and while ODD is almost 12, it's not looking like she's going to need them anytime soon and I'm tired of them taking up so much space. I've got a bunch of them from CVSing.

The woman's shelter is asking for tampons and while I know I could just drop them there, I don't want to give them things that they aren't really going to be able to use, yk?

Anyway, if you think of someplace that could use them please let me know! :goodvibes

I would get rid of it. I currently have a milkshake maker collecting dust up on top of my cabinets that I need to get rid of. We got it probably 3 years ago (with tickets from Dave & Buster's :thumbsup2) and used it exactly once. And now we have a Magic Bullet so if we ever get the uncontrollable urge to make a milkshake, we can just use that.

I have a milkshake maker that I got in '99 back when you could get things from Mypoints, not just giftcards and I have used it exactly ZERO times! :rotfl:

Let's just say it's now in the donation bags and was living in the tupperware cabinet. :rolleyes1

I would call a local jr. high or high school clinic. I bet they like to keep those items on hand in case of personal emergencies. Especially jr. high.

I've been so busy de-stashing I haven't even had time to post ;) After being laid off since September my DH has accepted a new job. I'd be excited except it's a contract type position making half of what he used to (but he has an excellent chance of getting hired on as a real employee, so we're taking a chance).

Anyway, we have no choice but to put our house on the market and move into an apartment. We've known this was coming since he got laid off, but now we're in overdrive trying to get the house ready to put on the market ASAP.

Yesterday we got our basement storage room organized, that was a big job! We've got lots of stuff put aside for a garage sale (and we'll donate what doesn't sell).

My big problem right now is trying to figure out exactly how much I have to get rid of for us to fit in a space less then half the size we currently occupy. Obviously a lot of furniture has to go, but the kitchen stuff is making me crazy. I'm afraid I'm going to have to get rid of some things I really like and use, but don't need (think extra mugs, bowls, etc.).

I guess I should be grateful that I got rid of a lot of things before they transferred us cross-country in 10/08, but this is a whole other level of de-stashing. It's hard. Oh well, one step at a time. First thing, get the house ready to go on the market. Better get back to work!

I've been destashing for weeks...I just stumbled on this thread!

First off..what is a nut roaster? I assume it roasts nuts. I buy roasted nuts on occasion...such as while strolling through a theme park in winter (what a treat) or at a beer festival (ha!)...but I can't imagine being up to the task regularly.

Last weekend I completely tore up my walk in closet. I can actually see the floor in there...oh yeah I can also do a 360. No more backing out slowly for me!

Today we tackled DD 13's room. I'm wiped out. 3 sacks of pure garbage and 4 sacks for the donation pile. Shes going in to high school next year...the easy bake oven and bucket-o-bratz need to go.

After finding this thread I feel a little reenergized. Think I'll go see what is lurking under my bathroom sink.

Delmar411- Can you call the women's shelter and find out if they would use the pads? I know the food pantry at my church is always looking for them because they can't be bought with foodstamps. It's on the far north side though.

Keep it up, everyone! :)

I am de-stashing too! We just moved and I am throwing/giving away as I unpack. Where does all of this crap come from? I swear I only bought some of it, the rest cloned itself or something.

I'm doing the same thing. We moved into a new house 3 weeks ago, and I have already made 3 trips to Goodwill. It feels soooo good though.

I haven't started getting out the home decor stuff, but I am sure I will sending a lot of that stuff to Goodwill too.

That's what I was thinking. The older women might prefer tampons, but if they've tweens/teenagers staying there with their moms, they might prefer pads.

Thanks for all the good ideas of places to donate these too! :goodvibes

I have some kid-free time tomorrow so I'm going to hustle around and see if I can't get these dropped off someplace. :thumbsup2

exactly! LOL DH's big plan was to roast nuts for the kids. I don't know why I enable him  but I found the roaster on clearance for like $5 a few years ago. It's been shuffled around the pantry, the kitchen and is now in my office space so it's time for it to get out of here.

Woohoo! I'm so in! The DISboards are my favorite place to read and connect, so what better place for me to join for this part of my life? Plus, if I make any money getting rid of stuff...that's Disney money!

Confession time: I am a recovering hoarder/packrat/sentimental fool...you get the picture. There is soooo much stuff in my house! :scared1: We live in a very small home, so I've grown used to having a lot of stuff around. Now my oldest son has been gone three years and my second son is living in his dorm. That leaves my 12 and 8 year old sons and myself fulltime and the 19 year old home for breaks/summer. I looked around during Christmas vacation and realized I had become accustomed to living in chaos. How did this happen? :confused3

I joined another board, but realized I was missing this place. Imagine my happiness that this thread was started. For those of you that whipped your homes into shape in a few days or during January, I am in awe of you.:worship:

I did a lot during the holidays, but it seems that the more I did, the more stuff showed up. Was it all compacted? I toted off a lot of stuff, but then kind of lost my momentum. Please help me stay motivated! It took a long time for all this stuff to pile up in my house, so I know it will take time to get it out.

I've read over all the posts and thought I would share a few ideas. I live near a VA hospital and they have told me that donations of magazines are very appreciated. I'm on a Freecycle group and recently learned about two free events where papers could be shredded in large quantities. I work at a middle school and would love to have donated pads. A shelter would be better of course, but if you don't live near one, your local school would probably appreciate them.

Now, I have my eye on one corner of my room...off to attack it!

I'm going to join all of you. February is my month to do major destashing. I am trying to decide if I should just donate and freecycle items instead of selling them. I might earn a $200 or so selling things but I am afraid that actually listing them on Craigslist etc. will just not get done and put me back in the same mess. We live in an apt. building and there are no garage sales allowed. So if I just donated them each day after cleaning it might feel more like progress is being made.

I'm with everyone else on the destashing/decluttering. I just hauled out 10 bags of clothes for goodwill. That was just from the garage! I'm sure once I hit the kids closets I'll find more.

In my duel project of destashing my house and my mom's house, I sent out 60 letters to remove her name from mail lists. Also found a site to stop catalogs Catalogchoice.org, and one for mail lists . This should stop some of the paper coming in.
