Who has rented out their points?

How about a simple procedure without having to read all the posts of others?

We'd like to cruise with cash and rent out our 200 points. We'd be using about 236 or so if I cruised on points. I'm really nervous about doing this. Hey, I can't even bring myself to sell something on EBay!! LOL

We've rented out several times over the last 9 years and have wonderful experiences. We've become friends with a couple of the people that we have rented out to and have had some repeat renters. What information are you looking for?

All kidding aside, my one tip is to look for an easy-going renter. One that is not afraid to rent points and is willing to trust you.

That's just it...I HAVE done my homework and got so many opinions that I can't sort them out! I must be having a bad day!!! LOL

For instance, how the heck am I going to know whether or not the renter is easy going!!!!!!! AUGH!!!

I guess the point is that I have the upper hand & the points, so I am in control.

Well, for one thing, if they answer an ad that you run and they answer it knowing exactly when and where and unit size and correct number of points, well that is my kind of person. Then if they are willing to sign a fair contract, that is my kind of person. If they start asking all kinds of questions about guaranteed view, handicap rooms-(not wanting), " how do I know that my reservation is not going to be cancelled?" kind of questions. Not my kind of renter. Sorry, we are not (well I am not) getting enough per point to deal with a worrisome renter.

Or, list your points for transfer only. I EASILY transferred 210 points into a member's account last fall. It was perfect...I had 210 points, and he wanted several hundred (trying to get a GV at BWV). He wrote up a simple contract, faxed it to me...I signed it and faxed it back. He paypaled me (I know many people have advised against this...we had no problems)...we split the paypal fees. I called and had the points moved to his account. He got them the next morning. EASY!!!!

With transfers, you don't have to worry about holding the ressie for someone else. I recently needed some points and had a member transfer some of hers into my account. I totally skipped the "contract thing" (she is a regular poster and I see her around on the boards a lot). I paypaled her, and she called to put the points into my account.

It's something to think about.

Hi Deemarch!

I'm considering your post pixie dust because just yesterday my best friend and her family decided they needed to rent for a September 05 vacation!

We joined DVC about a year and a half ago, cruised last March on points (stupid, but we didn't know any better) and so I don't have any extra myself to rent her.

I'm nervous about recommending renting to her . . . for the opposite reasons you are! What if the transaction doesn't go smoothly, she loses money, etc... So we figured it would be a safer bet if I bought the points, put them into my account and then controlled her reservation.

Anyway, I've never rented my points so I'm no expert. But last year I did rent some points from a very nice member I found here on the boards so my sister could join us. So I have some familiarity with the transaction process, although we didn't use a contract.

I know we don't know each other but if you want to follow up, PM me back and I'll give you my email. She needs points that will be good through Oct 05 and wants to stay at BWV.

Transfers can only be done one direction each year. So, if you "transfer" all your points out, and then decide to go on an "unplanned" trip in the same UY...you cannot transfer points into your account. You would have to rent and give someone else control of your ressie....sounds unlikely...but, it happened to me.

Also, people don't like giving their membership number to anyone else for security reasons. I don't have a problem with it...DVC asks for SO much information from you....a member number is not going to allow them access to your account.

I just found out about this renting dvc stuff. I'm interested, but I can't help it - I'm nervous. How do I know my "landlord" is legit?

Myalas - Click on the name of the renter (at the left side of their posts). Then check out the other posts made by that person, how long they have been a member, how many posts they have, etc. Ask for references for other people they have rented to. Renting really is a win-win situation for both parties, but you need to be comfortable doing it because a LOT of trust is involved. Good Luck!
