Just wondering if anyone (or anybody's kid) has done a college weekend where they are competing for college scholarships at a college. Care to share your experience? What sorts of activities did you (they) do? What sort of interview questions, etc...

I did and won it. It was a great experience - there was a really nice dinner congratulating all of the nominees and then we had a day where we were asked many questions by the board on a lot of different issues. Not just opinion questions, but actual fact questions where you had to have the right answer - and if you knew what your major was going to be, they asked you a lot of questions in your major. And then we also spent a day going to classes that we would take in our major. IT was a great experience. I found out a few weeks later that I received the scholarship.

Sounds like fun. Can you remember a few of the actual questions as examples?

the only questions I remember mostly had to do with my major, which was going to be French. they asked me about impressionist artists, chateaus, etc.

the only other question I remember (we're talking 17 years ago) had to do with my opinion on omnicience (sp?). I can't remember the details though.

sorry I can't remember more - good luck!

My S did one this winter and many of his friends also went to scholarship weekend. For my S, his was a one day competition. They had activities for the parents and the students. The students spent 1/2 of the day writing essays and interviews and the other half was devoted to the honors program and the students specific major.

Some of his friends went for a weekend and that was a student activity and the parents weren't involved. He said that is just consisted of an interview of what he wanted to major in and what were his interest.

Personally, I think that most of the scholarship weekends are more of a sales pitch than anything else. There are scholarships to be won, but they also want to wine and dine you and convince you to come to their school.

Anyways, congrats to your child. It's very exciting.
