Who has moved just because they wanted to?

By that I mean, you just moved someplace because you wanted to live in that place--it wasn't because of a job, school, or family crisis, you just decided to do it.

How did you do it? Where did you go? Did you save up then go? Did you just go and then find work? Did you check the job market there first? Did you have to move w/kids?

As you can see, I'm getting really antsy just sitting here in February in Wisconsin. I want a change of scenery (ah, that wish does not include snow).

Well, that's us exactly! No job lined up, looking at the equity in our current home to be the nest egg, DH current job is going downhill fast.....WE WANT TO LIVE IN FLORIDA plain and simple. But, we have 2 kids so going blind w/out health ins. income etc. is kinda wrong(ya think? ) but it is still our plan/dream/goal and we are shooting for this summer, or summer of'04 by the latest. I have analyzed the move to death...and the way we see it is we can't predict the future here any more than we can down there...we are just more familiar with this area. All of our stresses of everyday life will be there too...but that's the point...at least we will be in an area/climate that we pefer.

I don't think we will be doing that for at least 10 more years, and even then it won't be a "complete" move. We do plan to become "Florida residents" when we retire, and possibly sell the house we're in now and just have a small cottage "up north" for the summers. I think in another year or two we may kind of "start the process" by spending a couple months in Florida, and gradually increasing the time we spend there. But to just "pick up and move" somewhere with no real plan, not sure I could ever do that.

I moved to FL in 95 because I wanted to. My old roommate from DC called and said I should move down and room with her again and I thought "she's right" Less than a month later I was driving down. Mind you, I was 22, I had no children at the time, I didn't own a house and everything I owned fit in my car so it was a little easier for me

I moved to Atlanta because I wanted to get my parents out of Brooklyn. My Dad had already retired and my Mom was about to retire the next year. I couldn't imagine them affording to live off their pensions in New York City. My sister lived in Chattanooga, Tennessee and a house became available right next door so I BOUGHT IT! The job market was better in Atlanta so I moved there and they were an hour and a half away.

This was before my son was born so it was easier to pack up and go. Now I'm heading down to Florida in a few years. I really have no problems moving, I've actually moved 15 times in the last 20 years! I enjoy trying new things and new places!

Dh and I are going through the process right now - only we're moving to the snow! Actually it's his idea and I'm not thrilled, but I'm willing to consider it. We have been researching on the internet. First we found places where he could be employed doing what he wants to do ( When I'm ready to go back to work, I could work anywhere). Then we narrowed down states we thought we might enjoy and decided on the midwest. We've been looking up crime statistics, real estate and schools etc. in the towns where plants are located. This summer we are going to take a three week vacation, drive around and hit 13 locations. After our trip he'll start sending in applications to places we think will work for us.

We figure since he has a good job here, we need to be a bit picky and take our time. We do want to do it in the next two years though - before our youngest leaves elementary school. I'm consoling myself with the fact that if we hate it we can always move back here - his job will take him back in a minute - overtime and understaffing are one of the reasons we're considering leaving.

Guess I need to do more than just hope for pixiedust to go for what I want. And right now, that's to relocate to the southeast: North Carolina, Virginia or the FL panhandle.

I just asked Jim if, after Jordan is off to college or whatever, if he would consider moving to FLorida. He said YES, but wants The Keys or Miami because it is warmer. I told him that is NOT what I was thinking and he said he knows I want to move to Orlando

I wonder how the airfare will be from south FL to Orlando....Jordan is in 7th....so maybe in 10 years

DisyKat - you sound very much like us. We decided in 1994 that we wanted to move to the midwest from the Seattle area. We were living in Renton at the time and I was working at Boeing. I checked out the job market in Denver, Saint Louis, Kansas City and Minneapolis. We ended up moving to Minneapolis because that is where I could line a job up the quickest. We've never regretted it. (It's also half a continent closer to WDW)

You'll love it DisyKat just bundle up in the wintertime. And just think, you'll be away from all that rain and clouds. I still remember the forecasts and shudder: Morning clouds and fog clearing in the afternoon by about 6:00. Just in time for it to get DARK. There is nothing better than to wake up on a beautiful summer morning with the sun streaming through the window shades.

Yep I moved to CT 6 years ago because I wanted to and I've never regretted moving to New England. I love it here.

Sometimes I would really like to but I'm not sure where. Florida is great but I don't get to see the rest of my family as it is and my mom does not fly. I've always wanted to live overseas too. Maybe when the kids get older. It's nice to dream about every once in awhile. I do admire those of you that make the jump!

AS a died in the wool northerner, I can tell you I would NOT be moving to Florida or any other climate that is THAT HOT! I like our nice warm/hot summers and the beauty of all four seasons. I would get bored with the landscape of Florida. Of course, I LOVE visiting! Just wouldn't want to live there.
