And I mean LOST, as in, never found? Or if not completely lost, perhaps misplaced for 3 or 4 days?

I'm trying to reassure DH that our bags WILL find us at our resort!

I have used DME about 8 times and have always used the luggage service and always received my bags. I have read one or two reports of DME mis directing a bag but the bags are found the same day. You have a better chance of the airline losing your luggage than you do of DME losing it

Yep.
last year I used ME without the labels as Disney are now too mean/tight to send them to us here in the UK.

So when I arrived I went to the ME desk and checked in. I handed my baggage claim labels for scan and got on the bus.

6 hours later 3 of my 4 bags turned up. ME were adamant that the other one was not loaded.

4 days later it tuned up. Apparently Me missed it and it went round and round on the carousel for so long the airport put it in storage. Only when I phoned the lost baggage up did I find it.

I will never let ME carry my bags again until/unless I can get the yellow labels on them. now I wait and get them myself and carry to the bus.

DME has been around for 4.5 years. Reports of seriously delayed luggage have been extremely rare. I can't recall any reports of actually lost luggage.

Often times, delayed luggage can be the result of the airline misdirecting the bag and not flying it to Orlando in the first place.

DME is a pretty high-tech operation. The DME tags have barcodes. Those barcodes are scanned 5 separate times between airplane and resort room, and the dedicated luggage delivery trucks are tracked by GPS. Once a bag is in the system, Disney can know where it is at any given time thanks to this computerized infrastructure.

I dont know how you would be able to tell if it was DME or an airline that either misdirects or would actually lose a bag. If the tag stays on it, and the luggage makes it to MCO, although it's possible for anything to get lost, it is such a small number I doubt if it would even show up as 1/100th of a percent..

Although I have no idea what percent of luggage is lost by airlines, I still believe firmly that you have a MUCH higher chance of the airlines losing your bags.

There have been no report of baggage lost by DME on these boards.

Yes, there has.

Katypop, a long time and well respected poster, did report her travelling companion's luggage was 'lost' never to be found again. If I recall correctly, it was not clear if the issue lay with AC or with DME. Disney did reimburse the guest for clothing purchased for the week, but I cannot recall if we ever heard the final outcome (ie whether AC or Disney reimbursed more for the lost articles)

Now, having said that, DISworld is filled with drama and hyperbole, and 'lost luggage' is one of the great DISworld myths. In the RealWorld, lost luggage (truly lost, not delayed) luggage happens very rarely and impacts a very small percentage of travellers.

Yep. It was over 4 years ago, in 2005 when DME was about 2 months old. The women never received her yellow DME tags. It appears that the air carrier lost her bags, but because she had used DME, Disney took her to a mall and reimbursed her for the cost of replacement clothing.

See post #19 in this thread: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=869275

I also seem to recall one case when someone's bags were accidentally delivered to an empty room, and didn't make it to the right room until a few days later.

You probably won't find out where exactly the luggage went astray, in the same maner if you (for example) flew from Boston to Orlando connecting in Atlanta, you won't find out whether the luggage got lost between Boston and Atlanta e.g. on Delta or between Atlanta and Orlando e.g. connecting to Airtran.

That all? Did you file an official luggage claim at your resort? There is a difference between automagical luggage delivery being a guest convenience versus being the way Magical Express was "intended to be used".

I can just speak from my own personal experience, but I go to WDW 4-5 times a year and have been using the DME service since the very first week it was in existence. Yes, I was one of the original guinea pigs who used it just a couple of days after it started. In fact, I'll be using it again next Saturday (12/12/09). I have never had a problem with DME and would recommend it to anyone.

We have used DME many times and only once did we have a problem. And it was the airline's fault, but WDW came through for us in a big way!! :thumbsup2

One of our 2008 trips, DD and I decided to fly Spirit Airlines; ATL to MCO. (they no longer fly this route! :rolleyes1) 2 bags checked, both had the yellow tags on them. We were staying at AS Sports for 1 night before moving to a DVC resort. We checked in around noon, went to the parks for the day, returned to our room around 7pm and no luggage. I check with Bell Services - nope, they don't have it. I call Spirit Airlines Customer Service and after holding about an hour, never did get through to a human.

By this time DD (then 15) is in tears. Her makeup is in her luggage!!! I go to the front desk at Sports and they were super, super helpful. They were on the phone, calling everywhere, trying to find our luggage. They told me they were going to keep trying until they found it and you know what........ that's just what they did! Around 11pm we got a call from the front desk. They found the 2 suitcases!! :yay::yay: Our luggage had gone on to Fort Lauderdale, was eventually re-routed back to Orlando, and DME was in the process of retrieving it and would bring to the resort. They asked me what time would be "too late" to deliver it to our room. Uh, never!! And shortly after midnight, there was a knock on our door and our 2 bags were delivered!! :cloud9: YAY Disney!! :goodvibes

Disney WANTS you to use DME, they WANT you to get to your resort ASAP and get checked in and HEAD TO THE PARKS. They want to do everything they can to make it as easy for you to start spending money on THEIR stuff. So I'm sure in the case of missing luggage they will do whatever they can to get it found so people will not be afraid to use it.

And don't forget to add renting a car and driving to the other theme parks. They will do anything to keep your business, including free travel on the DME service.
