We are planning our summer vacation and it looks like we are going to Deep Creek Lake. We probably will stay at Will O'the Wisp. It looks like a pretty nice place. Has anyone ever stayed there before?

Anyone with any info such as fun things to do, great restaurants to eat at, etc., please chime in!!! We did get the Chamber of Commerce book for Deep Creek and it is packed full of info, but I always love to hear people's personal experiences.

TIA

We have been there but it has been probably 8 years ago. I think we stayed at Wisp. We only went for a weekend and went to the State Parks and hiked. It is a beautiful part of the state. Here is a link to the state website for the parks.

Sorry I can't be more help but enjoy your trip.

We live not too far away, however I have never stayed at Deep Creek. I would suggest driving over to Cumberland and riding the steam train, it is a beautiful trip and lots of fun!

Bumping for the evening shift  .

DH and I had the best ever crab cake and steak sandwiches at a restaurant there. I can't remember the name, but it was on the end of a dog leg road that ran along the lake and connected to the main road on both ends. The place looked like a dump, but the food was great.

:wave2: Hi Sharon,

We love Deep Creek Lake! Have seen, but never stayed at The Wisp, as our extended family usually rent 2 large 5BR/3bath w/jacuzzi cabin type houses next to each other to accommodate about 18-20 of us. The houses fill up fast, with bookings 1 yr in advance, even tho they are pricey.

D/Creek is a very fun filled family oriented place. It really makes for a fun relaxing vacation and the grands really love it! There is much to do, see and eat...LOL. I suggest you research on the internet the many activities best suited to your family to give you an idea.

The Discovery Center offers many activities - nature trails, snakes and reptile show, camp fire program at night, etc. There is Funland Family Fun Center and also Smiley Fun Zone that is alot of fun for the kids which incl: bumper cars, wall climbing, arcade, lazer tag, bumper boats, batting cage, mini golf.

There are several places to rent boats, canoes or kayaking, which is a lot of fun. Of course there is also a cinema. Near by is 'The Western Md Railroad' that does daily trips and even has a Murder Mystery dinner theater and travels 32 miles fr nr by Cumberland to Frostburg.

There are some very nice restaurants there, however, like most resort type places, filled to the brim and crowded with hungry, noisy people. We have tried several, with Uno's sticking in my mind as having tasty food. It is not feasible for us to eat out every meal, so we enjoyed taking turns fixing meals in or having cook outs.

Also, in the hot summer D/Crk runs 10-15* cooler than our usual Md temps. Night time can be even cooler and may require jacket and jeans. Have fun planning and having a great vacation! :goodvibes

Hey, thanks everyone!!!!!! :earboy2:

I was planning on doing the Smily Fun Zone. Sounds like something my kids would love!!

We will be taking our kids, DD14, DD18, DD20. They are each taking a friend. I'll probably need a vacation from our vacation when it is all said and done!!!!

We've been in the area a few times. In the summer, we've camped at Swallow Falls State Park, which is pretty close. It's got nice hiking trails, and you can splash around the mini falls, which is lots of fun.

Wintertime, we stayed in a cabin at Herrington Manor State Park, which is next to Swallow Falls. There's a much smaller lake there than Deep Creek, if Deep Creek gets too crowded for you.

We've also had a good meal at the Unos by Wisp, and I personally thought the local movie theater was a bargain! Great seats, and it was much cheaper than our local theater. We went one rainy night.
