Who has a Kindle? (wireless reading device)

As a special ed teacher who works quite a bit with assistive technology (and former librarian), I would remind everyone to not have to much expectations for the text to speech ability. It is going to sound quite robotic, and you can get used to it, but it is NOTHING like the beautiful melodic quality of a well read audiobook. And, yes, it's going to raise HUGE copyright issues, due to who knows those "voice" rights. I'm still really looking forward to getting my Kindle 2 (my dad got his version one for Xmas, and it's wonderful)!

A couple of questions for the current Kindle owners:

Jackets/Covers for purchase
Does a jacket/cover come with the Kindle? Did you purchase one? Do you think they are necessary or helpful? I've seen some really nice ones for ~$50 but not sure it is worth it?

Sunny/Beach Conditions
I'm heading for a beach vacation in March. Any tips for taking the Kindle along? Both in terms of protecting it from the elements and its being readable in the sunshine?

A nicer case is worth it. Kindle 1 came with a yucky vinyl case. It doesn't look like the Kindle 2 comes with a case. For my K1, I bought really nice red leather M-edge cover with an e-Luminator booklight.

For my pre-ordered Kindle 2, yesterday I ordered a M-edge leather cover, but this time I chose purple. the e-Luminator booklight will work with this cover too. Amazon has a really good selection of the M-edge cases and it looks like M-edge has added a greater variety of color choices in leather and pleather.


For the beach, many people just use a large ziploc bac to protect the kindle and read through.

Well hopefully they won't disable the text to speech feature. A] I'm not sure they could once they have been shipped......it seems to be pre-programmed in and not something they could control via wispernet. and B] if they do remove it I would hope some form of compensation would be given. But either way nothing is for sure so no need to stress it.

Since it isn't the same quality as audiobooks, they may be okay legally......but time will tell.

No, it's not going to have the same capability as a Kindle 1 had with an SD card. Instead, the memory is much larger - supposed to be able to store about 1,500 books.

My personal feeling is that Amazon decided they would "do" book reading well, and stop trying to provide storage space for non-Amazon book products and music.

And, after all, the Ipod is soooo much better as a music player and audio book tool - and I think most people who have Kindles also have some sort of music - playing technology too, don't you think??

By eliminating that SD slot they could make it thinner and less cumbersome. Since I don't use my Kindle for anything but reading Amazon-purchased Kindle books, it doesn't bother me in the least. For others on the Kindle forums, it has been a real deal-breaker.

Thanks for clarifying. I mentioned today that I was considering purchasing a Kindle 2 and my co-worker went off on a rant about it. It's not a deal breaker for me, (I love my Ipod) but I was surprised how forceful they were about the virtues of of 1 vs. 2.

Her DH does and from what I can tell he loves it. Next time we all get together I was planning on seeing what he likes/dislikes about his now that he's had it awhile (Christmas gift). He's a gadget guy; I'm sure he's read up on all the differences between the two.

Yes, it came yesterday! I haven't had a chance to play with it very much as yet, but my first impression is that it is wonderful. Sleek, the print is clear and it feels right in my hands. I think I will be very happy with it.
