This sounds like a good possibility. It's likely that the bus people are not going to willingly admit a mistake. And if I rememberl correctly, E isn't much of a talker, so tread lightly. If it's possible, I would suggest this scenerio to the parents. If they are mad, ....you don't need that. You have already been so wonderful to them and thier child, it would be too bad for them to alienate him for someone (you) who obviously cares about him and seemingly the only person who has time for him these days. Try "googling" selective mutism. May give you some ideas on how to approach E.







Kim- Maybe you won't get the snow afterall...I mean, you seem to be on a lucky streak these days!!

Morning Robin!! (and any others who may just be lurking this a.m.)
It's suppose to be and about 35 degrees here today, how 'bout where you are? We still have some snow in places but mud season has started!!! I washed my car the tues, it looked tan instead of lt green, but because we live ona dirt road, it was back to tan again yesturday!!
I had "504" meeting at my ds school yesturday. He isn't able to get occupational therapy or any other services until he is 1-2 yrs behond acedemically. That doesn't make any sense. He is barely getting by, with a little help he could overcome this block he's developed with his writing, maybe even progress to above average. I'll be doing research today to find out the actual details because I think because of his diagnosis(spina bifida) they are required to do more. I have a few professional contacts that I may have to round up for the next meeting. He's such a bright little boy and easy to teach if you can find a way to relate things to his interests. He's not a textbook learner. Multiplication facts for example, instead of him just memorizing the facts, we do a memory game for the question to the answer or a game show. They say he refuses to do his work, I say, then make it more interesting, because I don't have a problem with him at home. The QUALITY of his work is excellent, the QUANTITY is the problem, so he does understand the concepts taught, jsut doesn't find it worthy of his time. I know, know, sounds like a behavior problem, but again, I don't have those issues with him at home, actually, he seems to be getting better and enjoying a little time with his sister every now and then. He's begging to be homeschooled. To me that says there's a problem in the classroom. Anybody have any similar experiences?

Reading keeps your mind sharp. You'd be surprised at how much info you'll retain without even trying!!

We were quite suprised ourselves when we washed our tan car and truck and ended up with a shiny white car & blue truck!

I agree with you on your DS at school! My DS had alot of schoolwork sent home to make up since he has been sick this week! He looked thru it and became very upset! Half of it, he says he has already turned in, he said she had done this to other students! I did see him do alot of that work already, I can't see him not turning it in just for the heck of it!

How many teachers/aids are involved with your DS?

There are two third grades, 17 kids in one class and 18 in the other. Two reg. teachers and one aid(or ed. tech as they prefer to be called nowadays).
Randall is young for his class, his b-day is in August, and many of his classmates were held back in Kindergarten...about 7-8 in the entire 3rd grade so they are all a yr or more older than my child. It's been suggested I have held back due to maturity....I don't think he should be penalized because of his age....acedemically he is where he belongs....but then again, he's barely getting by because of the writing issue. Math , reading, and science he is average or above slightly. Does that sound like a kid who should be held back?

Nope, it sure doesn't to me! I don't want to insult some teachers, but it seems like textbook is the only way they know how to teach! There are other teachers who go out of the box and have wonderful results to how kids absorb the info!

You know if he needs to be held back or not! It would be one thing if his grades were suffering terribly...

Have you thought about sitting in on his class time? One of the parents in our school snuck in the class w/o their child seeing to observe the class. Good luck with everything!

There's no chance of me entering the school without Randall knowing....It's a VERY small school and all the kids in all the grades call me by name. (I used to volunteer) I do have the principal on my side right now but she has accepted another job elsewhere for next fall. She's suppose to observe Randall in class next week to get a better feel for his mental block and behavior issues. Thanks for the encouragement though, sometimes I just need a reminder that I, as the parent, will ALWAYS know what's best for my child. I jsut wish I could get him excited about something in school and the teacher recognize his potential. Anyway, thanks again.

Let me start off by saying.. U~ I read that book when I was younger and I loved it! It's a great book and you will enjoy it.


Well E did not show up again today. Now this time I don't know if it's another 'bus mistake' or if his mom is upset from yesterday.

Oh did I tell you guys that I was all ready worried that she was upset with me because I couldn't watch E when I was sick. The whole deal about her and her hubby not having enough leave to take off from work... but anyways..

I don't know what is going on. At this point I thinking they will be doing me a favor if they decide to put him back in daycare. Sorry to sound mean but this is just too much mess for me to deal with.

I tried calling E's mom and got an answering machine.. I didn't leave a message. I don't know his dad's number or else I would of tried him.

Kim, it would be great if we could ask E what happened... but he does not talk, only repeats what you say to him.

Sunny, I'm going to look up selective mutism and see what I can find. I did read some paperwork E brought home a while back and it did say he was "borderline autistic". So I guess he is not fully diagnosed with it yet but almost there

Robin, every time E has been dropped I have been right there. Almost in the bus helping E down the steps and I've always seen another lady on the bus holding his backpack and what not. So I guess they do check that someone is there to meet him.

TKs, have any of you entered the Disney Mobile Phone sweepstakes? I think I won?! First, I got an email, then a phone call, and today, by Fed Ex, a package of documents (release, verification, etc.), with a pre-paid return Fed Ex envelope included. I'm sooo confused. IF I won, it's 2 free phones with 12 mos of free service. Unfortunately tho, we just re-signed for 2 years with our existing server and the penalties to cancel might outweigh the freebie. ANYONE enter? Know if this if legit?

Something just seems weird lately. I also won a lottery to buy very expensive, very coveted Cubs tickets today. While I was NOT going to spend $150-$250/ticket , I did buy some $45 tickets, just to say that I did, and to experience Wrigley Field's Bleachers for the First Time!

Hmm.. I haven't experienced anything like this. I do think it's great that the principal will sit in class to observe next week.

DD starts school next year and I think it seems funny to homeschool one child and not the other. If I homeschooled Randall, eventually Cora would want to be also. Cora is a bit of an over acheiver....so she belongs in reg school. But if that was what was best, I would do it.


About E, as you know from my PM, I had suspicions towards autism. Theres a great program out there called PECS...Picture Exchange Communication and also many autistic children use some basic sign language.(I used to work at a special school for autistic children and used both of these methods with a child who is now talking.) Should E come back, it might be worth checking in to. If he doesn't, relax, you did nothing wrong!!! Good luck!

Hey Cally! DD is back in school today, but DS is still home with a cough! The school actually told me to keep him out this week due to an epidemic with this new flu going around! He was upset I made him stay

Try not to worry yourself to much about what's going on with E! Sometimes I make myself sick worrying, I am a natural-born "analyzer"!

Cally, if it were me I would definitely find a way to get into contact with E's parents. Him just not showing up when he is supposed to is not right. How do you know where he is or if something has happened to him or not It is very rude and almost negligent for his parents not to at least let you know that he is not coming.

If they are going to get upset because you happen to get sick and can't watch him for a day or two then maybe it would be better if they stuck to daycare where there will always be someone there for him. Sometimes you just can't help it, I'm sure that you didn't decide.... oh I think I'll be sick for a week so I can't keep E.

It might be time to let him go, that may not be in his best interests but it sounds like it probably is in yours.

U ~~ you keep reading something. It doesn't matter what you are reading (not suggesting that you start reading porn or anything though ). The fact that you are reading is what is important, whether than be books, newspapers, cereal boxes, comic books.... whatever you choose..... just find something that interests you and keep reading.

Wendy, it is about 37 here today according to the weather network. It's not too bad out, a bit of a chill in the air. We really don't have any significant snow left, although I saw a little bit of small patches of snow on some creek banks yesterday. You guys should see how high the river is that goes through our town. It has pretty deep bank and it have overflowed the tops of the banks. The water is moving really fast too and carrying lots of debris, even what looks like whole trees They have probably opened the flood gates further upstream.

Wendy, it sounds like your son needs to have things taught to him in a way that will catch his attention and stimulate him more. The regular way is not working and obviously he is smart enough to catch on.
