It would make it so much easier if the schools would send out supply lists either at the end of the previous year or early on in the summer. Our district never tells the kids til they start school. By that point, most of the sutff is picked over or all the great sales that run at the end of summer are over and you pay through the teeth!! :earseek:

We went to staples yesterday and picked up some things, like pens, mead 5 star binders and notebooks. I made sure to tell the kids NOT to take the tags off the binders or write in the notebooks. I have the receipt and if need be, I can return them later (while I am getting whatever else comes home on the list! )

Last year, we HAD to go to Staples on the first day back to school (the school requested a specific notebook that is ONLY sold there!). I swear, the only experience I can compare that to is shopping at Toys R Us on Black Friday!!! :earseek:

DD's school is the same not till first day of school
we keep ongoing school supply box
notebook paper, construction paper, folders, notebooks, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, scissors, gluesticks, elmers glue etc

we picked up new pencil sharpener and book sox already
book sox go fast here
we'll get the rest on first day of school
good luck I feel you're pain

Sorry you haven't gotten yours yet. We got ours on the last day of school this past June! Most of the local stores; Target, Wal Mart, Staples... all have them.

Ouch- what a pain!

Our PTA (bless them!!!) raises money by selling school supply packages each year. Each spring, they take orders for the next year's school supplies. For around $40 (paid in the spring), your child's supplies will be waiting in their new classroom on the first day of school.

What a bargain, and what a relief to not have to deal with this each year!

Our school starts on the 31st and we just got the class list (taped up at the schools) and the supply list (sent with a note from the teacher). DS9 is going into the 4th grade and the supply list is very reasonable. DD5 is going into kindergarten and no supply list - so far!

The e-mails have been humming with us Mom's talking about the class list. I am VERY happy with the class DS has - I get to be with 3 of my good friends again! :)

DGD starts kindergarten in a couple of weeks. DD has no idea what supplies to buy her as this is her first child going to school. As said before she is afraid by the time she is given a list everything is picked over.

DD has friends in the area and most of them have been given a list for there children. So alot of people are out there buying the supplies. She called the main office for all the schools in our area and they seemed totally surprise when dd told them that others in our school district got there list. They said no one should have gotten one yet.

She did buy a backpack and a lunch box but that is it. She at least wanted dgd to get the one she really wants. Happens to be a "Care Bear" backpack and matching lunch box.

ladydancer,
If memory serves me, for kindergarten, each of my kids needed an art smock (dad's shirts work great when they are worn backwards!! ;) ), crayons, scissors (fiskars work great!), pencils, erasers and glue sticks. Maybe your DD can have these things ready for your grand-daughter. :D Oh yeah, a pencil box too! :bounce:

I'm in the same boat as the pp's DD. My DD is starting kindergarten & I have no idea what she'll need, or they'll want her to have.

She has orientation at her school on Aug 27th, so I guess I'll find out then.

Waiting here. They have the lists for my 1st grader by teacher on the internet. The problem is we don't know who his teacher is until the 19th. My 3rd grader has a generic list on the internet but it says that is can vary by teacher, so again waiting.

We'll be at the schools on Thursday morning with hundreds of others getting our list and our class assigns.

still waiting in NJ too. We won't know who there teachers will be till a few days before school and some teachers tell us the supply list some don't until the first day. I think school starts on a friday this year so at least we will have the weekend to go shopping.

also, we are kind of lucky because our school supplies a lot of the things they need. they give them notebooks and one folder they use the scissors and glue sticks there also. the older kids get a free day planner sponsered by the pta. ( but of course we are paying for this through our school taxes I guess anyway)

I got a heads up on what my sixth grader will need because I work in the school and because I asked one of the teachers, otherwise no other parents still know, they will find out the first day of school, and then the huge crowds looking for specific items will fight over things.
I still had extras from last year and this year I picked up some more extras for next year.

Today my to boys started back to school. They get there list on the last day of school for the next year.

My DD got her list for the next year on the last day of school too. We actually didn't buy her stuff until this past weekend though. She will be in 1st grade and all they need is erasers, glue, crayons and a pencil box! I got off very cheap this year. When I came home and looked at the receipt, I only spent $3 on her stuff!

You need to complain to your school district. Dose the district have a web site? Our posts the lists on the web site months in advance. For middle school, hoever, we've learned to just buy the basics because it varies a lot by teacher. For elementary, we always just buy the school supply packages that the PTA sells...almost everyone does.

I also stock up on things like spirals, pencils and notebook paper at this time of year while it's on sale...it kills me to pay full price later on.

My daughter is going into kindergarten this year and her supply list was:

100 (yes ONE HUNDRED!) pencils
2 8 ounce bottles of school glue
2 packs of kindergarten crayons
4 marble notebooks
2 folders
1 pencil box
1 crayon box
1 8 count box of markers
large pink eraser
sissors
back pack
lunch box
snack box (must have 2 boxes, can't put the snacks in with the lunch or the kids tend to eat everything at one time)
1 smock
3 large boxes of tissues
1 pack of baby wipes
1 pack of brown paper lunch bags
1 box of ziplock bags$5.00 for the weekly reader
1 month worth of milk/juice money for snacktime

DD, Remy, went to Kindergarten last year and they sent home supply lists the last day of school. I had to take her out a few days before school ended so I didn't get hers. She has the same teacher for 1st grade (looping program) and her teacher is really picky about the supplies down to what brand name she wants. I just called the school today and have to go pick up a list on Tuesday so I can get what she needs. School here doesn't start until Sept 7 so I still have time thankfully!

DD got her teacher assignment, supply list and summer reading list at the end of the school year so no problem here.

KathyTX - Im curious what kind of supplies are needed that cost $40 (and you consider a bargain at that price)? We probably spent less than $10 for everything our DD needs this year (3rd grade - what grade is yours?).

I've seen a few wild items but that's one of the wildest. Is your daughter supplying the entire kindergarten class? I doubt I used 100 pencils in all my years of school.

I live near KatyTX and our PTA does the same thing, with similar prices. Maybe it soungs high because we're pretty much buying supplies for the whole year....lots of the supplies are pooled and stored by the teacher for future needs. BUT, when you buy the PTA box, you get a ruler every year, scissors, etc. every year...kind of wasteful. DH resisted for a while, but the ease of it sold us. The last year we bought our own, they wanted one thing that was ONLY available at Office Depot and another thing that was ONLY available at Target, and another thing that wasn't available at all.
