Who else is job hunting right now?

I just wanted to check in on you guys and see how the interviews are coming. Any nibbles? Or big bites, hopefully?

I just got the news today that my adult instructor job is going full time as of Monday! I was absolutely thrilled. Didn't expect it to go full time so soon, but I'm sure not saying no.

As for my second job, I started it last night. I need to watch with it and make sure I'm not overwhelming myself with it. As of now I'll just stick to having one client and see how it goes from there. What's nice about it is there's 2 hours of work per client, plus an hour for paperwork (that doesn't really take a whole hour to do), plus travel time. So that 2 hour client will end up being 3-4 extra hours a week in pay. The client lives a block from one of my computer classes, so that works out nicely.

I'm finally able to collect unemployment compensation! Yippee!

I applied in early July, but because I didn't earn anything in the first four of the last five quarters, I wasn't eligible until October 4th. My first payment was deposited yesterday. I feel rich! We even had takeout for dinner tonight to celebrate.

Now, if I could only find a job!

Well, I have great news! I got the job that I wanted so badly! I was really surprised, I wasn't sure if they would hire me but they did! I am now my city's Animal Services Superintendent. Its not exactly a traditional careerpath for someone with a law degree, but I am BEYOND excited. I was really getting down before this, so you never know whats around the cornor!

After being out of work since February, I broke down today and applied to work over the Holiday Season at Target. Wish me luck. I am still collecting unemployment, but I just need to get out of the house (my DH is retired). In Maryland, you are allowed to keep the first $100 that you make and if you make over that, they deduct it from your unemployment. So basically, if I get the job, I can bump up my weekly earnings by $100. I'll gladly take that.

:thumbsup2 (not as cool as a job so I will save the :cool1: until then:rotfl:)

:cool1::cool1: for you too!!

I got another "thanks but no thanks" call....and I really wanted the job. It's so bad here that we started on food stamps...so I got to spend 6 hours Monday at a meeting for that and came home to that message. :guilty: No new nibbles and I am getting really discouraged, cryey....however you want to say it.

Tomthebarncat: You'll never guess what happened in my interview on Friday!

After about 30 minutes of great back and forth discussion/questionning/the department supervisor picked up my resume, scanned it, then said: "Tell me one thing about yourself that isn't on this resume."

For a brief millisecond, the phrase: "I like rainbows and unicorns" danced thru my head:rotfl:

But then, because of these boards, I was ready with an intelligent, thoughtful, and non-personal answer.

So THANKS, Tomthebarncat. You had me ready for this one.

Now if I only hear back that I've got this job, I'll be truly happy.:woohoo:

So for those of you in the position of hiring, about how long does it take before you get back to the applicants? And do you get back to those who aren't getting the job?
I'm getting antsy even tho I know it's only been a few days since my third and last interview but since I first spoke to the company about this job over 3 weeks ago, you'd think they'd want to hire someone as soon as possible.
Is it rude to email personnel dept/HR to ask about the "timing" of the hiring process or do I just have to wait it out?

Sign me, anxious...

I had a 2 hour long interview that went very well... in August. As soon as I was interviewed, they put the job on hold. I don't call very often, but I do call every 3-4 weeks to make sure that they know that I'm alive and interested.

You should ask the question as you stated it in your post. "I'm just wondering when you plan to make a decision on this position." Follow that question up by asking, "Is there anything else you need from me to help you make that decision?"

They'll at least know that you're interested.

No news is good news when you're waiting to hear about a job. You want a phone call from them and not a letter. A letter means that you didn't get the job.

So that job with Maui Wowi I really wanted?? It has been reposted on Craig's List already (less than 2 weeks after I got the thanks but no thanks call). So.....I e-mailed the hiring lady via the Craig's List link and said:

Ms. xxxx-

I was pleasantly surprised to find this position reposted for Maui Wowi. I understand that I wasn't your first choice but I would love to be considered for the position once again. I can, and will, resubmit my resume if necessary.

I have never come out of two interviews more energized and pumped up about the company as I did with Ms. yyyy and yourself.

I will also understand if you don't want to reconsider me. Though I do ask if you could please give me some feedback as to what you were looking for that I didn't have. I would greatly appreciate it.

You can contact me at xxxxxxx or via e-mail at vvvvvvvvvvv@bbbb.com

Thank you,

Did I do okay?

That was a terrific thing to do! You sound very enthusiastic about their company and I think they'd be foolish not to give you a second look.

Best of luck to you!

I agree with Mushy. If they don't want you and they give you feedback as to why, at least you've gained that knowledge. If they don't want you and they don't give you feedback, well, you know, karma and all....

DH got a job! :cool1::cool1:

It is a four month contract but with a good possibility of extension or direct hire. The salary is lower but we have saved almost all of his severance so we can even it out. It is a large company with lots of room to move up and in a stable company.

I am SO thankful!

I'm a youth pastor and have been helping young college grads find work. To say finding jobs for these outstanding & hard-working individuals is a challenge would be a drastic understatement. There really is nobody hiring in our area, and those who are are not even considering those with a college education. (Saying they are "over-qualified") ??

I tell people to keep their chin up because we will eventually see better times economically.

Question/opinions needed...I saw my advisor at school on Tuesday to register for my spring semester classes. While we were talking, he mentioned that the school has had a LOT of faculty and staff retire recently. One of the retirees was the registrar, and then the assistant registrar quit. So now they have nobody in the registrar's office at all (other staff is filling in "when they can," which has to be difficult since this is Registration Week!). But yesterday, I checked 6 job sites and they haven't listed anything. I also checked higheredjobs.com and the school's site (under Employment) itself. Nothing. It does, however, say that if you are interested in employment, to send a resume and cover letter to one of *these three* people listed. Should I just do that? Should I name-drop my advisor in my cover letter and say that he was the one who told me that they were hiring (in more professional words, of course)? I would LOVE to be employed at a college!

That is great news!

Let me fill you in on something that I learned in case the contract is not extended or your DH is not offered a permanent position. If you get a rejection in applying for UC benefits, call your state's number and talk to someone. I spent the summer not collecting anything and using our home equity to make ends meet. When I had a problem filing online, I called the number and found out that because I was collecting and still had weeks available under that claim, I was eligible to collect all summer.

So, don't believe the letter you get if a claim is denied, call and speak to someone. I wish I did.

Hopefully, this will be moot, but in case anyone else is having trouble collecting, it's something to at least try.

I've applied to be president of Jr. Achievement in our area. Hopefully, I'll hear back from them with an interview offer.

I haven't heard back from Maui Wowi....guess that wasn't the job for me. :confused3

I had an interview for a very part time position...but as I told the interviewer I know I will need 2 jobs to catch up after being out of work for so long. I also was so flustered...the day had been horrible up until then that I totally bombed the interview. I sent a thank you e-mail and stated that I am not normally so wishy washy.

I have a couple of other jobs that I am e-mailing the hirer back and forth.

Well, I finally heard back from my job prospect. They decided to "go with another candidate." RATS!:sad1:
