Who else is job hunting right now?

Just got a temp position. A friend of mine went on maternity leave and she recommended me as a fill-in until she gets back.What a great friend!

Anyway, I start on Monday, working 3 days a week and the job goes until February. Yea.

Hopefully by then, full time jobs will start to open up. I remain ever optimistic!

There have actually been 2 jobs for which I'm qualified and could apply. One was in the paper and one was on Monster.com.

The first is at a local university. If I could work there, my kids could go to college for free. That's a huge incentive since college is only 4.5 years away for my DS. They also have reciprocity with 500 other schools, so they wouldn't be forced to stay local... and all we'd have to pay is room and board.

The other is for the county next to ours. They are looking for a Director of Collections. I started my career in banking as a collector when I was still in college, so it's not too far out of the realm of thinking. Director positions usually pay well in county govt, too.

Please say a prayer for me. I SO want a job.

I had an in face interview on Wednesday....it was odd...I was interviewed by a person who had been in her position for less than a month...the original interviewer was called into a meeting (but they could have called me the day before to reschedule and didn't)...it's where I would like to be...back in a college Financial Aid office.

I have an interview for a clerk typist job at my college on Thursday! I am very excited...however...

In today's paper, there is an ad for an administrative support clerk for the public schools a few towns over. This position is full-time, 46 weeks per year, with benefits, and the starting salary is more than I ever made. The clerk typist position at my college is only 20 hours a week, no benefits, starting is less than half the public schools job...but it's a state job.

I know there's no guarantee that I'll even land an interview for the second posting, and I don't even have the first job yet, but...in the event that I do get an interview and they do offer the job (I know, I'm getting ahead of myself)...well, would anyone else feel guilty as heck taking one job, then having to quit after only a few weeks if the better one did come along?

Mushymushy, I'm in the same situation as you. I'm a certified teacher, and can't get a job. I've done a number of long-term substitute positions, but still can't get anything permanent. Very frustrating, to say the least.

Well, think about it in this light -- if a company had to cut back for financial reasons, they would do what they had to do, right? So, you do what you have to do for your own good. I was kind of facing that with my own situation. I got both of my jobs within days of the other... thankfully I didn't have to quit the one and was able to just pick part time hours at the other, but I would have definitely picked the better job of the two if I'd had to choose.

Hey, there are a couple of areas you can look outside of public schools! Look into adult ed and/or social services area. Where I live, I just got hired for behavioral health wrap around services doing mobile therapy for kids. They hire at two levels -- bachelors and masters, and the degrees can be anything in the social sciences. Education, social work, psychology, sociology, etc. Might be something to check out.

Being in a public school is still where I want to end up, but I'm pretty happy teaching adult ed right now. I feel like I'm making a difference with these people!

Look at it this way... if you're offered both jobs, it just reopens the position at the college for someone else who is out of work. Don't worry about it.

Hang on! They probably have to go through a ton of applications and weed out those who have absolutely no qualifications. A week is no time in some jobs.

DH got job starting Jan 4. Two hours away, he and other guys will share a house and come home on weekends.
There were 700 applicants for the job he got. We feel very blessed.

Even though you are anxious to find a job, remember that those who are mulling through applications already have one and aren't going to move any faster to fill the position than they have to move. Plus, you don't know what type of red tape is involved.

At one of my old jobs, HR would send me the applications to review. I'd send back two stacks... interview and file. The interview pile would be sent to the HR Manager for him to review to see if he agreed with my recommendations (like you can tell what a person is like just from their resume/application). He was not quick about reviewing these. Once he gave his ok, then HR would schedule the interviews for me. This could take weeks, depending on how fast the HR Mgr would move. It was frustrating for me as a hiring manager, too.

Don't get me started if I was swamped and I asked HR to prescreen applicants for me. This just delayed the process more and I only had to do it once to learn that it wasn't worth my while.

So, if the company to which you applied is like that, you could be waiting for a while. Especially with companies receiving more applications than I did in the past.

Thanks, I needed to hear the voices of reason. I keep trying to tell myself, it's only been a week...and since the holidays are here, "available immediately" might actually be "after January 1st." In fact, I had an interview last week (I'm not holding out hope for that one, though), and they said, "We want to fill this job very quickly." However, "quickly" to them is "in January." I hope it's the same situation with the one I really want!

I have an interview!!!

It's on Thursday at a local university in the registrar's office in a professional position. I would LOVE to work at this university. First of all, my sister will be attending this school in the fall, so she can go to lunch with me sometimes. Secondly, my kids can go to college for free there or at 500 other schools when they get there in just 4 short years.

Please say a prayer for me. I'll be speaking a lot with God over the next few days, myself.

I was just thinking of this thread myself (really!). I got a job today! Okay, it's only "temporary"...at this time. I made a friend in my Financial Accounting class last semester, and she told me that her company needs help. A few days ago, she emailed me to ask me to send my resume again and she delivered it to the "quality engineers." They called within an hour and I had my interview today! I was there for 90 minutes and I talked to 4 people. I will be filling in for someone who is out with a back injury, but the 2 quality engineers that I spoke to said that every department in the company needs a backup person, so maybe when their person is back, I can go elsewhere. Anyway, I went home, but they then called around 3 p.m. and offered the job! I go to their agency on Thursday morning to fill out the paperwork and I start the job on Monday!

I am a little overwhelmed, but still very happy! I hope it turns permanent in the end!

I'm kind of stuck in a rut right now with my one job. I absolutely love my coworkers and the position is extremely low stress, but I'm just not at all happy with the company (it's a non profit). These past couple of weeks I had myself all geared up to pick an end date in the next month or so, but I think my boss has picked up on this and is now trying to turn things around for me. I sooooo appreciate what she's doing, but I'm not sure if it'll be enough.

My other job pays more, but it's more risky. It's not a typical 9-5 job, but rather I do mobile therapy. So I could have a good pay period where every client keeps their appointments, but if they don't I don't get paid. So I have to consider that very carefully when I make the decision whether or not to switch all my hours to that job.

Hi all and Happy New Year! Iv'e been lurking on this thread for support for months and I figured I would finally post after this last frustrating interview. Last Friday I had an interview at a doctor's office for front desk. My background is customer service and various administration since I was 18 and I'm 46 now. I have always held long term positions...11 years my last job, 5 years the one prior so I am not considered a job hopper.

Well, the gal that interviewed me Friday tells me that she is interviewing "30 " people for this one position and will bring back "2" for a final interview with the doctors and oh, yeah....if I don't hear from her by Tuesday well then sorry. So, it's late Tuesday evening, actually now Wednesday morning and I never did hear from her so I guess I'm out of the running. I have to say, when she said "30" it was all I could do to keep from saying "Are you kidding me, lady!" Unreal.

So, I just move on and keep lookin. I've been on the job hunt since we came back to CA Aug. 2008!! I didn't get a call for a single interview till I found the CA WorkSource/WorkForce office and had a wonderful woman who was probably half my age and brilliant sit down with me and totally revamp my resume. I also took a couple classes she tought at the center and let her give me lots of great tips and advice. That was last July 2009 and since then I have now been on "5" interviews which is good but yet none of them have turned out to get me hired. Gosh, I remember back in the 80's if I went on three job interviews in a week I would get at least two of the three jobs and have my pick. Not in todays market.....but I'm not in my 20's either anymore. I hate to admit this but when I was the manager at my last job and I was looking to hire a customer service rep. I usually went for someone younger than myself so I'm not surprised that my resume gets pushed aside quite a bit. They probably think I'm this old lady when I'm really just the opposite. I am a very fun and engaging person to work with yet I mind my own business which means I don't go looking for trouble and I don't bother my co-workers and I like to get my work done.

Everything happens for a reason, so there is something out there for each of us. I've been looking for a permanent position since November 2007 with a 5-month stint in between, so I know how you feel.

Mushy, talk to your boss at the non-profit and tell her what you want to make you stay. If she already knows that you're unhappy, a straight talk will at least have you on the same page. I hope you can work everything out and not have to make a tough decision.

I have a job, probably through March, and I am actively searching for another one, because I despise this job. I had a second interview for a great job last week and found out last night I did not get the job. What a bummer!

I have a couple other prospects that look promising, but man I don't know that I can spend another day at that desk!

Thanks so much for the words of encouragement RUDisney! I can relate to this feeling as my brain still can't comprehend that my body is 46...ARGH!!

I just got an interesting phone call from my DS's best friends mom who has a friend who is looking for an office manager. My last job I was a Consumer Support Manager (glorified customer service manager) for 11 years so we shall see. She's going to call me back in about an hour and give me the lady's name and number to call so...... I'll let you know what happens.

Must keep positive!
