So, our trip is approaching very quickly and I realized today how much I dislike flying. Who has some good tips for overcoming the butterflies in the stomach feeling?

I hate flying! I will admit I am not a fan, or rather I should say I am scared of it. I get the feeling that I am going to panic on planes and run around screaming or something crazy...which I know wouldn't end well. I live in the US but I am origanlly from England so for me not flying isn't an option, if I want to see my family its a must do. I also LOVE WDW so again what are my options....

I try a few different things. Firstly there is no reason in todays society that we need to suffer and feel so streesed about something it makes us sick, I have thrown up on planes and recieved oxygen on planes from stress:( No fun! If I know I have to fly I call the doctors and get a script for xanax, I only take a very low dose but it makes flying work for me. I take it about 1 hour before I get on the plane and it really makes me feel more at ease.

However its not a cure for me so I will try to distract myself as much as I can, over the years I have found listening to music or reading trash mags during take off and landing really help. Also being on planes that have entertainment TV's etc... help too.

On the long haul flights I will have a beer or something to help to:) I really think keeping yourself busy is the key, that or doing something that really relaxes you. I have 3 kids so besides on own issues it can be stressful just keeping them busy. My biggest wish is for them not to have the issues I have so part of me getting over my flying issues is being brave so they don't see that Mommy isn't happy. On the flights from England I would cry and I could say "Mommy is just sad to be leaving" and that would work... However that line doesn't fly anymore (pardon the pun) when we are going to Florida. SO I put my big girl pants on and deal.... Yes, I could drive to WDW but I think to myself... why drive and waist all that time in the car when I could be having fun!

Hi
I hate to fly, and rely on Xanax. I get a prescription from the doctor. One time I took to much (I thought I didn't take enough since I could still function) and couldn't remember anything about the flight at all. Just be careful how much you take. I don't fly without it. Good luck!!!

:thumbsup2 Yup, that is how I fly. I little pill, one vodka and OJ (need to bulk up on the vitamin C so I dont catch a cold on the plane) take both right after clearing security while waiting for flight.

I. Hate. Flying.

I flew with DD in November, so I had to act all brave. I couldn't take anyting since I was alone with a 7 year old.

What helped me was using my headphones to plus into the armrest and listening to the radio, and then doing DD's crosswords/word searches etc.

I am scared to death to fly and we are doing it next month!!! I have not flown since 1994!! I always said I would never get back on a plane, but if I want to take my kids to Disney this was the only way, because my dh absolutely will not drive. I am just hoping that I don't have a panic attack on the plane and that we have a very smooth and uneventful flight!
Good luck with your upcoming flight. Hopefully we both do well!

I recently heard the odds of being in a plane accident each time you board is 1 in 35 million. And here's the better statistic - if you are in an accident (not sure how that is defined), the survival rate is 95% (think of the miracle on the Hudson).

I love to fly, But on a airline it sucks for more reasons than I could list.

Flying is my living. Have a cocktail, if possible, and sit back and relax. Think of all the time you'll save driving.

Mircale on the Hudson.... In April at WDW we were waiting for wishes and met one of the passengers from this flight.... Magic

Yes, Xanax is your friend. My dr. gave me a script (.25mg) just for flying. About a half-hour before boarding I tell dh that I am taking it and then I am ok for the 3 hour flight. I don't sleep well the night before we fly so the lack of sleep and with the help of the little pill I am able to relax and even sleep a bit on the plane now. I HIGHLY recommend it - I went too many years without it and I made myself a nervous wreck.

If anyone is in the Houston Area and wants to get over the fear, I'll be glad to take ya up and let you actually fly the plane. Teach you how everything works, what goes into making a plane etc. I love the miracle of flight :thumbsup2

Tommorow morning flying a small plane (Piper PA-12) from Brownwood, TX to Telluride, CO, gotta love it!!!

(An "Accident" is where there is a fatality or severe damage to the aircraft, an "Incident" is when someone bumps a wing on something or bends something minor...we call it "Hangar Rash")

To us, our WDW vacation begins at the airport gate and the flight is the first 'ride'. We don't fly enough to have become jaded by the experience, it's all part of the fun.

I'll jump in with another Xanax recommendation. I haven't flown in about 8 years but the last time was from Jax, FL to Los Angeles. Xanax definitely helps with the nerves, but as said earlier be carefull with the dose and/or adding alcohol. I usually took 1/2 a pill but since it was a long flight I took a full dose and don't remember the flight. The only thing I remember is being at the airport in Jacksonville and then being in the rental car in Los Angeles later that day. My DW said she had to hand hold me through the transfer in Houston. Worked great for me, but not really fair to the DW. We are planning another trip to California around New Years and if it comes through I'll be back at the Dr getting a small supply of Xanax.

My suggestions to someone who gets Xanax for flight is to try it once before you fly so you will know how the dose will affect you.

As my kids say... the minute they get through the TSA checkpoint unmolested the trip begins!!! :rotfl2:

I used to love to fly but with all the regulations now in place and all the restrictions, I really dread flying. I would much rather drive even if it takes us two days to get there. When flying, I am so stressed before the flight even takes off (packing correctly and lightly, the lines at the airport, going through security) that it puts a damper on my trip.

I like booze! For me, booze really helps! Bloody Marys and Baileys and coffee on morning flights, and Chardonnay after lunch. :)

Might have to take you up on that if I am ever down in Houston! Telluride is a neat airport to go into!!

Couple weeks ago I was out in Portland and took a C-172 up and over Mt. St. Helens. Awesome experience!!
