Kinda inspired by the Condi/Hillary poll.

My immediate pick is Abraham Lincoln. When you consider the demands of the time, it seems obvious. Plus, he went into office not seeking to abolish slavery but to preserve the union...but later understood that he would have to abolish it...I think understanding a need to change you position) and then doing so) is a great thing.

In the past century, though, I would have to go with FDR. Got us through the depression and most of WWII.

Who are your top picks?

Ronald Reagan...the end of Communism.
Definitely my vote. We just bought the book "Ronald Reagan, The Great Communicator" and its awsome.

Abraham Lincoln, of course! No contest!

Regan comes to mind. Also clinton wasn't too bad either. I mean yeah, he had an affair, but he did a good job with the country. :confused3

Reagan? Of all time? Wow!!!

I'm with the OP...Lincoln in 19th Century, with Jefferson a close second, and FDR in the 20th Century.

I might go with George Washington. He had the opportunity to become a Dictator but didn't. He set the stage for Presidents as we know it. He also was pretty progressive for his era he freed his slaves upon his death.

Abraham Lincoln.

Wow!! I'm gonna say Teddy Roosevelt. That's right off the top of my head, but I remember really enjoying reading about him when I was a kid. What a charactor!!
Isn't it funny though....when I was a kid if you asked a child what they wanted to be when the grew up, many of them said "the president of the United States". There was even a picture of the president on the wall of every classroom in both grade schools I attended and even in Jr High and high school. I have yet to see a pic of the president in any of my DD11's classrooms, and she's attended 3 different schools. What do you suppose that's about? Was it the embarrasment of the Nixon thing? I really don't know when we/or kids stopped looking up to the president. hmmmm

For me, it's Thomas Jefferson edging out Abraham Lincoln. Washington would also have to be high on my list as is FDR. In recent times, I prefer Clinton.

Washington for 18th
Lincoln for 19th
Eisenhower
(I won't pick FDR for 2 reasons: no, he didn't end the Depression, WWII did; if he had succeeded in packing the Supreme Court he would've been as close to a dictator as this country has ever had - control of all 3 branches of government plus he was "...a terrible snob." (David Brinkley)
