They are regular park tickets, but are hard like an annual pass/credit card. You can get them at a few places, like supermarkets as I mentioned above, but most tickets nowadays are more flimsy cardstock tickets.
The Disney Store carries the plastic ones. They are the same price as the pre-purchase ones online, but you might not have as many options with days. I know ours carries at least the 3 and 4-day hoppers.
Our trip through AAA/Disney Travel Company had beautiful plastic park hopper "keeper" tickets, and we also had wonderful room keys that we got to keep for souvenirs from PP.

I have seen them in supermarkets as well but are the hoppers the same as the AP's where you have to go thru the passport picture /verification place first before use or can you just show this plastic card at the entrance turnstiles?
