Who can recommend a good digital camera?

DH and I are still using a 35mm camera with film! We are so archaic. Even our telephones don't take pictures like everyone else's.

We would like to buy a digital camera before our WDW trip in September. But we are digital camera illiterate, so we need advice. Which camera would be good for us, but not overly complicated.

I want to have fun taking pictures - not struggling with a camera. Yesterday, I used one of those machines at the pharmacy where you can crop and enhance digital pictures and I went wild. Now I want a digital camera. It was so fun working on those pictures!
Anyone have one to recommend? Something that can zoom, take great pictures and not tax our little brains too much?

I just bought an Olympus D-590 Zoom. I love it. I wanted something small with a pretty decent zoom and this is great. I also love that it takes small video clips as well. It is pretty nifty.

No advice on WHAT camera to get , however, I would strongly suggest you get it soon. Use it alot and become familier with what digital cameras can do.
You dont want to buy it a few weeks before your trip and have no idea how to use it. Also always keep a spare set of batteries on hand when using a digital camera

Check out the photography board here, they may help with model numbers. I suggest and love my Canon. I don't think you can go wrong with a Canon.

I love my Canon. I have a Canon PowerShot SD400 Digital Elph. I actually won it in a radio contest and it is incredible. It is so small and takes great pictures. Also, it is very easy to use. Just point and shoot. Before, I won this camera, I had (and still have) a Canon A85 which is also great just larger that the one I am using now.

I love my Canon S2 IS, which was recommended over on the photography board. You should really check out that board! Everyone there is so friendly and helpful.

Cybershot DSC-P93 Digital Still Camera (I own a 5.1 pixel, which makes it about 500 dollars but less pixels mean less cash). It has enough features, and is pretty small. The screen is big enough, but if you can't see you can zoom in or zoom out if you like.
Try Future Shop or Best Buy.

I've been happy with Sony's cameras for a long time now.

Go to a store like Best Buy & fiddle with them all---see which ones you like, then research them online at home.

I second the suggestion of posting on the photography board. They have tons of advice, and helped me choose the one I am about to buy. I went with the Canon S3 IS..not that that is necessarily helpful.

I have several. Two that I would recommend are:

My Canon A310 takes great pictures. It is small and pretty easy to use. You can't add additional lenses to this, but it is a great point and shoot. It had 5.1 times optical zoom and is 3.2 megapixels. I can walk and take pictures without it being blurry.

I just got a Kodak z740 for Christmas and i love it (lots of people on the photography board don't like Kodak though). You can add additional lenses and filters to this (DH bought me some for my early birthday gift). Kodak makes REALLY, REALLY easy to use cameras. Everything is pre-programmed. This has 10x optical zoom (but with additional lenses it can be increased) and is 5 megapixels. the one thing is it does not have image stability.

ETA: I do recommend going to a store and trying one out. I believe Costco has a great return policy. So, if you find you don't like it, they will take it back pretty much any time.

I also reccommend Canon. I have the S2 IS and think it is great if you don't mind its size. My daughters have the SD450 and A530 because they wanted smaller cameras that would fit in their pockets. (You sacrifice zoom power if you get a small flat camera.)

I am looking forward to seeing what it can do on a trip. My partner has it this week to use in Idaho. She just flew out this morning and will be doing some sight seeing/hiking this evening. So, I am eager to hear her reviews of the camera. We have had so much fun with it around the house taking pics of the cats and dogs. I think that for under $200, you can't beat it! Maggie

I've gotten pretty good with it even though it doesn't have the image stabilty. I know some people like to have that feature that's why I even mentioned it.

I am sure the photos from Idaho will be beautiful.

I can't wait to use it at WDW. I have been using it every chance I get to practice. DH got me lenses (wide angle and telephoto), some filters, tripod and a few other things on ebay. They have been great and we paid under $80.00 for everything (including shipping). If you interested in those things, I would look there.

I have a canon digital rebel that I adore. We also have a point and shoot digital olympus. BOth are good cameras. What I would do when you go looking is take something that has a bright color like a ball ect. to the store with you. Take a photo of the object with each camera and see how close the color is to the real thing. Now if it is off you can adjust the color balance with some cameras but not so with others. So I would pick the one that comes closest to start with.

You did not say if you want a point and shoot or not. I love my rebel because I can adjust the exposures and trade lenses on it. If you dont want to do all of that I would think it would be too bulky to take with you everywhere.

I have had 3 canons in my lifetime. My dads old metal one that I learned on (man was that heavy) the origional rebel and this one. SO far all of them especially the metal canon have been dropped, hit against walls, abused in general and had no problem with them working correctly.

THe olympus is a great point and shoot but has no zoom so its a trade off.

Try looking at dpchallange.com it is a great free digital photo website. That can compare cameras, teach you tricks and give you inspiration for good photos.

Canon A620, it's fantastic. Ask over at the photography board but in pretty much every review of cameras in publications or online Canon comes out on top.

Lots of Canon lovers here! We have a Kodak Easyshare, and wouldn't recommend it. I think Canon's the way to go!

I used to sell digital cameras at walmart (so I got no comission). I LOVE photography/cameras, etc. Anyway I would always tell the customers that they need to decide what options are important to them and how much money they want to spend and buy the best camera in that price range. Example, if you need a camera to take pictures of your kids on a ball field, you will need a camera with a good zoom...pay attention to optical zoom, digital zoom is more for croping, and doesn't really zoom (make sure that I did not get those backwards, it has been a while since I sold them). Also, depending on how much you can spend, some of the more pricey ones come with their own battery that is recharagable. That is definately a plus, I also recommend that if the camera does not come with recharagable batteries, to buy them when you get your camera. They are about $18 and they come with the charger.

All of that being said, if it comes down to two cameras of the same quality, and you have to decide, I would research it by looking up product reviews, talk to family/freinds and get recommendations. One thing that I would always tell the customers is to not be in a hurry...this can be an investment if you do your homework.

It is a couple of years old but it is a great camera and comes with an rechargeable Lithium ion battery which makes it worth the money to me... any camera that takes batteries seems to just eat up the juices so fast, one pack of batteries per day on my Hp Camera... This camera just plug in recharger at night and it will last all day! And I take alot of pics over 100 a day while at Disney...
You can also find these on Ebay at a decent price. paid over $350.00 for mine...
