White smoke! We have a new Pope!

He sounds like an excellent choice.

I thought they might chose someone younger than 76. How exciting for Catholics and just Christians everywhere. :) I will definitely join him in prayer and will pray for him.

His age is the only thing that disappointed me about this choice. Was hoping for someone in his fifties or sixties.

I'm not catholic and sorry if this was posted already (i just logged on).

Do they normally pick a new pope so fast?

It was fast, but not totally out of the ordinary. Pope Benedict was chosen a little faster.
I think people generally expected something tomorrow rather than today.

To be honest, there was very little "normal" about the process this time, given that a Pope hadn't resigned in many centuries.

I love how people consider it attention seeking when a legitimate point is made.

I didn't think it was to get attention but it is pointing out the obvious. The Catholic Church does not have women Cardinals. It is just understood within the Faith that that is how it is, no?

It just seems to "stir the pot"--like getting people started on *that* topic. This is about Pope Francis I...not about the roles of men and women in the Catholic Faith.

Excited about this choice for Pope. Love that his given name is Joseph and Pope name is Francis. Two humble examples of faith. Latin American helps too considering the huge number if Hispanic Catholics

I think his name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio if that makes any difference

Not surprising at all. They've had about a month to think about it, and to research the other cardinals!! I thought they might be done by today...glad to see that happen. They really shouldn't have needed much time to get this done.
Not RC either, but Episcopalian....very interesting to watch the process. Hoping Pope Francis finds the guidance he is going to need for this journey!!! What a huge responsibility.
Now one has to wonder what happens to those that normally surround the pope. Does the new pope get to bring in his own 'people'??

I heard (so who knows how accurate this is) that he was actually the second choice when Pope Benedict XVI was elected. That could have something to do with the quick election.

Anyone else feel kind of let down? My DS (who is gifted) really wanted to be Pope. I tried telling him being Jewish may disqualify him, but I really hate letting him down bc he is so gifted. I guess I will put on my Rainbow Bright T-Shirt he got me for Father's Day last year to cheer him up.

Is there someone I can write to about this?

His given name is Jorge (which is equivalent to George in English), not Joseph.

Make sure that if you are busy writing this letter and your wife has to take your son out shopping with her, she takes him into the ladies room with her so he isn't abducted.

I think they said he would be bring a lot of his co-workers with him to be his right hand.

According to a priest they were interviewing on one of the news channels, he will get to appoint people, I suppose similar to how a President would.

Random fact: While traditionally Popes have come from the College of Cardinals, technically any Catholic male under 80 & over I believe 18 may become Pope.

That's actually a really big questions, and will be interesting (to those who are interested in such things) to see how it plays out. The Pope's the Pope, so he can appoint whoever he wants and bring in all his own people as advisors and leaders. That said, there are a LOT of long-time clerics in positions of power in the Vatican (known as the curia). Many people feel that the curia needs a really thorough cleansing. T

This is a terrible analogy, but think about the Executive Branch when a new President is elected. Some people automatically move out and the new Pres brings in his own people (white house staff, close advisors, heads of agencies depending on their policy views). But a lot of people in the executive branch stay on. Random IRS agents, engineers for NASA, beurocrats of all stripes, basically stay on regardless. The President can't just fire all of NASA, even if he thinks NASA should go to Jupiter instead of Mars (or whatever).

The Pope could, though, reassign every person in Vatican city. Obviously that would be chaos - it's a Nation-State and needs some kind of continuity. So how deeply the replacements go is a question. Does he just bring in his own people as personal advisors and let the rest of the Church buerocracy stay on? Does he do a wholesale clean-sweep? Obviously it will probably be somewhere in between.

Oops in the van picking up kids and the person on the radio said Joseph. Sorry
