We are planning to take the train that goes to the Yukon and understand that the excursion is 8 - 8.5 hrs. Anyone who took this excursion with DCL can you tell me what time did you leave in the morning and return later in the day. Was there still time to look around the town and shop before having to get back on the ship?
Thanks

We didn't do it with Disney, but we were on the second train when we did it on Princess, with one other train behind us, and we were back soon enough to walk all the way to the other end of town for lunch at Skagway Brewing and still had time to stop at other shops if we wanted to. Skagway is *really, really* small.

I'm going to not answer the question you are asking, but instead offer an alternative excursion recommendation (that still involves the train). I'm not trying to be annoying or contrary, so if you don't want this unsolicited bit of advice, move along. ;)

Still here? Awesome!!! I would highly recommend doing a bus up/train down or train up/bus down excursion. The views are completely different and with the bus, you get to stop and really see the sights and explore a bit. I would have been really bummed to be on the train the whole time.

We booked privately with Chilkoot Charters (due to recommendations on the DIS here). We were picked up at 8:15 on a bus, taken to numerous sights along the way by an incredible tour guide and then we enjoyed lunch at a summer dog sled camp (where there was an option to ride for an additional charge - which we did). Then we were taken to the train and enjoyed the ride on the way back down where we saw completely different sights (and some of the same but from a different vantage point) which we loved. We arrived back mid-afternoon, explored the town and did a little shopping before racing back to the ship just before it started raining and a cold wind blew in.

I was just researching that trip yesterday. Couple of questions: bus ride said it was 4.25 hours- is that time with stops included? Not sure my boys can sit on a bus that long. Where did you get to stop and get out and explore? Was enough time spent at dog camp? That was a must-do on our list but didn't want to spend $500/person on that excursion. Thanks in advance

Actually the excursion we are taking l believe is the bus up to Carcross with stops, visit with sled dogs and train back down, l believe it is the same one that you went on only booked with Dcl. I know it's cheaper with Chilkoot tours and l wanted to book with them but hubby wanted to stay with Dcl. Silly l know. I was just curious about how much time there was going to be before and after, one for breakfast and two for shopping and looking at the town. I really hate the cattle call of getting people together for disney excursions.

We did this! Train up, bus down with the gold panning-lunch option. We had plenty of time to see Skagway. As a PP stated, it is very small.

This past August was our 2nd cruise to Alaska and on our first sailing we did the DCL excursion with the White Rail Pass, but one way only. The feedback I've read over the years is train both ways is too much/boring so I would definitely stay with bus one way/train the other.

I was DETERMINED to get to Emerald Lake and it's been a bucket list item for me. I knew I wanted to use Chilkoot Charters after our 2013 cruise so fast forward to this past August, it was an easy decision for us. The Yukon Expedition (I think that's what they call it) was bus out to the Yukon and we were with @anricat :) and we did go to the Emerald Lake, even if it was just a 5 minute stop. In my experience not all tours go there and that was important to me. The bus wasn't really a bus but it was more like a 20 seater - wouldn't you say @anricat? Our guide was amazing and stopped often and took pictures and was so genuine. We had a nice lunch at Caribou Crossing and also went to the Carcross desert. Everyone, but us, on the bus was dropped off at the train for the journey back to Skagway and we had the entire bus to ourselves. We also got lucky and our driver stopped at the Alaska sign and he explained most cruise ship tours will no longer stop there as it's just too dangerous to cross the road and for our day he was right - at the peak it was very very foggy and crossing over to the left side of the road in that would have been dangerous. Since it was on the right side coming back, he just pulled off for us. I mention this in case it matters :)

The price for us, because we didn't do the train and my son was considered a child with Chilkoot Charters was around $215.00. Absolutely no regrets and I'd definitely use them again.

How did like the train/gold mining trip? Our daughters 7 and 14 want to pan for gold and I want to do the train.

I was on the same Chilkoot Charters Tour with 'anricat and 'ibelieveinthemagic'. We did the 8:30AM excursion with the bus up, train back. We had to meet off the boat by 8:15AM. We decided to do room service breakfast that morning. We hung our order outside our door the night before, asked for it to be delivered between 6:30-7AM. They came right at 6:30AM. It was good as a wake up call, as well as a great idea for 4 of us to eat and get ready in the room.

As far as shopping afterwards, the excursion ended at 4PM. Our tour guide met us at the train and asked if anyone wanted a ride into town--we were the only ones to take him up on his offer, everyone else walked back so they could see all the shops. We wanted to stop at the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park--so we had him drop us off there. When we came out, it was raining/sleeting, so we decided to just get back on the boat and warm up/get cleaned up before dinner at 5:45PM. There was a long long line outside in that rain/sleet/wind to get back on the boat. I don't feel like 'we' had enough time to look around the town, but that wasn't our focus in Skagway anyway--it was our Gateway to the Yukon...and puppies!

The Chilkoot tour bus holds 24 people, so it's much smaller than the Disney buses--and can load/unload faster, so we could stop at more places and for a longer period of time. Our guide timed it so that we wouldn't be at the stops WITH the big buses, he did the stops in a different order.

The 4.25 hr bus ride includes all the stops. Our guide made sure to stop and let us out at least every 1/2 hr. Each scenic stop was maybe 10-15 minutes long, except for longer stops in the town of Carcross (1/2 hr to visit the couple shops in town), and at Caribou Crossing Trading Post (no idea how long we were there...we had the bbq lunch, did the dogcart ride, held puppies, pet goats, and shopped...maybe 1 1/2 hrs?) We did a couple of scenic stops after the Trading Post--the Carcross Desert, Yukon Sign, and a viewpoint where we could see the train coming into the depot--before he dropped us off at the train.

There was enough time for 'us' with the dogs. We weren't going to spend that much 'just' to see dogs. This was such a great mix with getting up to the Yukon Territory, going on the White Pass Railroad, and getting to do the dogcart ride and hold puppies--as well as having lunch included!

Here are some pics of our scenic stops:

Any thoughts on which way is best, taking the train up or taking the bus up? I'm wondering if it makes a difference for views or crowds.

Thanks Geomom, l was thinking that room service would be best in the morning as well. Great pictures. We have been looking forward to this cruise for along time. We will be celebrating our 35th anniversary.

We chose the bus up on the theory that if it was foggy in the morning, maybe it would clear up by afternoon so you'd be able to see more on the train ride back. Well...we still had some fog at the higher elevations, but I 'think' it was less than if we'd gone in the morning, considering how foggy it was in port that morning:

The fog did make for some interesting pictures from the train.

But it did clear up after a while:

This. This. This. This was key. The driver was so great. At one point he said something about making it to the passport control stop before all the big busses. He was really focused on maximizing our time at each stop so we could get the most of out of it without being around a zillion people.

I was worried about the 4.5 hours on a bus thing but it really wasn't like that at all. The longest we were on the bus continuously was maybe 30 minutes? There were lots of stops. It was great. My DD wasn't bored at all. This was my DH's favorite excursion of the things we did in Alaska.

I basically have the same photos as Geomom (since we were on the same "bus," really more of a van) but if you want to read about that day in more detail, my trip report link is in my signature and has all the details and more photos. :)

I signed up for the DCL trip. The excursion does end early enough to explore the town and check out the Red Onion across the station for a few hours of lip service.

How did like the train/gold mining trip? Our daughters 7 and 14 want to pan for gold and I want to do the train.

They had a dog there walking around the camp, and a little village to walk through (plus a gift shop that sold old time CANDY! (mind you - we are catering to the kids). The cast put on a little show. A little kitchy, but My girls LOVED IT! It was geared toward the kids... and my thoughts were.... "We're in Alaska, we need to pan for Gold"!

They had an option of a BBQ after. We did not book that one. So much food on the boat, and it gave us more time to look around skagway.

also... my son was a little older - 11. Before we went, we studied the Chilkoot pass, and all about the Gold rush. We got friendly with the guide on the train. We asked him to point things out at the train went by (for example... Dead Horse trail). It was so interesting to know the full backstory before we went. My son knew about the "Golden Staircase", etc... The guide was so enthusiastic to share knowledge... Honestly, I just loved it. I would put the train on the "DO NOT MISS" list.

And the beauty... Well, it was SURREAL. I am going back!!!
