White noise machine for travel?

My daughter sleeps with her fan running but it is more for the noise than the air movement. When she goes to random overnights she uses an app on her phone but when we go on our cruise I would prefer her not have her phone running all night for the entire cruise. Does anyone have a white noise machine they recommend for using in a state room? I bought a tiny fan (USB) before I realized it was the sound not the air and the fan is specifically made to be quiet.

Thanks so much!

Target, WalMart and any chain drugstore have a slew of 'em

and AMAZON has dozens ....

curious thing about a cruise tho .... what some complain about is the 'background' noise of engines, seas, wind and ventilation systems .... aka white noise.

if the phone is in 'airplane mode' running the white noise app is no problem

We brought ours April 2018 with no problem. Then in February on the Wonder we noticed while unpacking that our machine had been confiscated. No note was left in our luggage, it was just gone. My husband inquired at guest services and they looked for it for 30 minutes and then told us it was back at port. Apparently all white noise machines have to be inspected by an electrician and ours didn’t pass. The next day it showed up our cabin with a message on the phone from guest services making sure we got it back. We still don’t know what that was all about but I’m going with an app next time and avoiding the hassle.

White noise machines are one of the items one the list that has to be "checked" or inspected by the crew upon boarding. It has to do with the electrical cord. We knew ours was old and would be confiscated so we used batteries instead and didn't even bring the cord. That being said, we had ours in our carry on fully prepared to show our white noise machine to whomever asked, but no one did. I'd choose one with white noise plus other noise options like crashing waves and rain. That's my preference.

They added the white noise machine to the "must be inspected" list earlier this year, I believe. My Feb 2019 cruise was the first time I'd cruised since they added it and they definitely took mine from my carry-on for inspection (along with my fan) and returned them both to my cabin later the day of boarding.

Thanks so much! I had been thinking maybe battery operated to avoid the risk of having it confiscated but wasn’t sure.

As for why I am leaning away from the phone...I don’t love the idea of using a phone while it is plugged in. Just a personal preference thing.

Just grab a cheap bluetooth speaker. Doens't have to be inspected. Can sync with her phone. Can also play music. Cheaper than a noise machine.

I would just use the phone. I don't see any issues with it running all night. Just leave it plugged in.

On why white noise machines might be confiscated, we absolutely LOVE our Dohm white noise machine. It has a little fan and sucks air through holes that are designed to create white noise. But when on vacation, we had one of these melt down. It suddenly started to smoke, and after unplugging it was hot to the touch. I think it was probably a dodgy plug/electric--it wasn't the best motel ever. But still, it was enough to make me understand why a cruise line might not want one on a ship.

I take a small battery operated one. Haven't had a problem with it on any cruise line

FYI, if an iPhone or iPad is fully charged and in airplane mode, it can easily run a white noise app all night without needing to be plugged in, and still have juice to spare in the morning.

Just make sure the app is designed to keep running when the phone locks and the screen turns off (most do, but some do not).

Just chiming in. College dorm life more than 35 years ago caused me to be addicted to a fan at night. When I travel I use a small one for the noise but also to blow on me if the room isn’t cool enough. I had a small fan for YEARS. That fan died earlier this year in Brazil-possibly bad wireing/voltage (it was the fan’s 3rd trip to Brazil). Anyway I’ve been stressed to learn about DCL more strict rules for all things electrical. I think I have found an acceptable noise combo on a sleep app as back up, but I am going to get a new small fan at Walmart, test it out, then pack in in the original box to help it look brand new and hope they don’t take it. Frankly, Walmart has a better return policy than Amazon.

We have a small Homedics white nose machine from Bed, Bath, and Beyond that DD has used at home since she was a baby. (Well, we are on machine #4 or something at this point, but you get the picture.) We took it on our DCL cruise, but more recently, we used use a white noise app on the iPad when we travel. Since we always have the iPad on trips anyone for DD to watch movies on planes or in the car, it's just more convenient.

Thanks again everyone. I appreciate everyone's help! I didn't even think of an old iPad. She has a mini that she hasn't used for quite awhile but might be perfect for this (and cheap since we already have it)!
