Last time I looked, tennis shoes are mostly white. What group makes up these senseless rules and is there some 'fashion police' going around in public telling people what they can/can't wear? Such nonsense.
As someone with a degree in Fashion Merchandising Management (Do I use that degree? unfortunately no) I can tell you that was specifically for SHOES and the reasoning was mostly because they were more likely to get dirty if worn outside of sunny summer months.
This "rule" has long been out dated.
Wear your white.
If you want to "follow the rule" then wear a light brown shoe with it.
I never wear white shoes other than tennies. Tomorrow’s party outfit will be my new cute white skirt, a sleeveless black top with ruffled edges and black sandals.
White skirt? Sure why not?
Of course there is more black in my wardrobe than any other color soooo what do I know.
Oh.
But don’t wear white shoes (anytime) unless you’re a waitress or nurse OR it’s Halloween….
Honestly, I wear black almost every day either on the top or bottom or both. My husband calls me Elvira. He loves Elvira so that is indeed a compliment.
This was true for the 70s as well. We were not allowed to wear jeans. In fact, all of us young ladies in the family were not even allowed to wear pants. Skirts and dresses only. Probably part of my hang ups with fashion rules.
I have never heard "women over 40 can't wear jeans." Yikes. I'm 62 and of course I wear jeans. I don't know anyone who doesn't unless they find them uncomfortable.
My grandmother's were of the generation that wore hats and gloves (matching their shoes of course). It was definitely harsh, but that is how it was back then. My grandmother's finally switched to pant suits in the 1980's which was almost scandalous. They still observed the wearing white "rule" until they passed away.
I saw more people adhere to this “rule” in the northeast but I’ve only heard people laugh it off in Texas and Florida. I have seen a few people get picky about seasonal cowboy hats (felt vs straw) and seersucker suits for formal summer events, but white is allowed year round.
Originally from he northeast (Plymouth MA) and heard that rule many a time. Now living in FL for 10+ years and it certainly isn't apropos for this climate.
It is one of those rules that has long disappeared, like men not wearing hats inside.Heck, I will be clad in a full white suit, shirt and shoes for the Jan 1 Rose Parade as a Rose Parade volunteer!

Whoa never heard of that myself either.
Personally I do find jeans to be extremely uncomfortable but then again to me anything that's not my pajamas is uncomfortable so I'm learning to just deal with it.
I've found that relaxed fit is relatively comfy but they do look a bit big on me because I have zero butt so they have just an overall loose look instead of being flattering on the butt and then being a bit loose in the leg.
My husband is still a stickler for this rule. In fact, he mentioned it just today. We were at a place in the country where a lot of the men were wearing their cowboy hats in the dining room. That’s a big no-no in his book.
