Our computer is only 1 year old...Guess I'll stick with ME unless I find someone that will hook me up with some software..:o

We have the home edition and have had no significant problems with it.:)

As a professional programmer I agree with none.

So, should I keep ME or what???

No problems except I reboot once a day to keep resources high..:)
Another question....should I keep the Antivirus crap icon's up on the toolbar below or does it run automatically????
Maybe having them up drains some resources....can't have any viruses...

Browneyes, wasn't trying to step on your toes, just agreeing.

Upgrading Windows tends to just perpetuate problems from previous installs. It's always better to start clean.

I have some problems with the XP licensing, and we have had problems with XP and installing older software. Even Office 2000.

If you were purchasing a new machine which happened to have XP on it, I'm sure it would be fine. Again be careful with licensing. I have heard, although I'm not certain of this because while I am a programmer, I'm not responsible for keeping our software licensing current in our office, maybe someone else can confirm that the new Office XP is licensed for a year, and has to be renewed, which is a big change. I know that I had read that they were going to do that with XP itself, but I believe that got dropped.

For what it's worth, you probably should stick with ME. If you are having problems, the best solution is usually to re-install from scratch, as many problems are related to junk that is left in the registry and all over windows.

LOL! You weren't stepping on my toes, I just gotta give Shep a hard time.:p

I agree with him keeping ME. I wish I had kept it. I would've saved myself a lot of headaches. My system wouldn't be running as fast, but it would be running smoothly, and I wouldn't have had to replace so much.

Shannon, can't you go into System tools and do System Restore???

It is very difficult to go backwards once you have updated Windows. You really have to do a full system restore, and since very few home systems actually do full system backups....

Shep, you have the most bug-ridden version of Windows ever produced. Maybe a friend has a Windows 98SE disk you can borrow. It's stable and very similar to ME.
You might also look into buying a used copy of Windows 2000. It's extremely stable. If you want XP for all the new features, buy XP Pro.
Goofy Dad: If he does a clean install (not an upgrade of ME) XP will automatically set restore points every so often. That's about the best one can do. Of course, one should always backup data files, but is it really necesary to do a full system backup on a home system with mostly default settings?

No problems with ME yet, except for rebooting every day...only when I dis a lot though..:o

Wasn't sure how the System Restore worked...

I already posted my reasons.

It's hard to go backwards, so I didn't suggest 98se, and it doesn't usually solve problems by upgrading. XP is still new and is also having problems with older software.

I've never used Linux, at home I'm still on 98se. At work we have everything from 95 and up. XP machines are still causing us some problems. 2000 seems to be the most stable, but since he's already on ME, I wouldn't necessarily think he'd want to spend the bucks on 2000, which wasn't really designed for home use.

Sorry this was unclear, I meant to say "It's hard to go backwards, so I didn't suggest 98se. As for upgrading to XP, upgrading windows is not usually going to resolve problems." This is because it doesn't necessarily clear out registry problems or other conflicts caused by improperly installed or deleted programs.
