Hi! I will be taking a Disney cruise with my family and my parents in April. We will be staying in Ft. Lauderdale and taking Ubers to the Port of Miami. I don't have a lot of uber experience and and am having trouble deciding what type of Ubers we will need for our group based on the info on the uber site. We will have 4 adults and 2 kids (ages 10 and 13) as well as probably 6-8 pieces of checkable luggage plus 4 smaller carry ons. Do you think we should plan on 2 uber x or 1 uber x and 1 uber xl? There is a pretty significant cost differential between the X and XL for that trip so was hoping we might be able to just do the 2 X's. I know we could fit 6 people in an XL, but not with all the luggage as well. I would really appreciate thoughts from the frequent uber passengers on the board. :) Thanks!

I drive for Uber in Miami, so I'll try to answer. You are going to need two Ubers, and possibly two Uber XL's. Your kids are almost as big as adults. There is no way six people plus all that luggage are going to fit in one Uber.

Be careful in placing your ride request, being sure to put Port Miami as your destination, not Port Everglades. If you are staying at a hotel in the area of the Ft. Lauderdale airport, you might have some difficulty getting a ride, so you might have to try several times.

You may also have some difficulty with Ft. Lauderdale drivers not wanting to drive to Miami. Many of them like to stay up there because they don't know their way around Miami and are afraid of the traffic.

Thanks for the advice. We are staying in Plantation. We will request our uber a bit ahead of time, then, in case we have to try a few times.

You're going to struggle to do two uber x's with all that luggage. Two people in our group when we last went to Disney used uber for airport transfers from home and once at MCO. They had two carry ons and two checked bags. They did all uber x's. First trip, the driver had zero trunk space because it had the driver's items in it so all the suitcases went on the seat and on one person's lap while the other one sat in the front. Second trip, they filled the driver's trunk with just those pieces of luggage. Same thing on the third trip. No way would they have gotten anymore luggage in the trunk and still had room for additional people. You likely need two xl's.

Don't order your ride until you are ready to go. There will be a lot of Uber's around Plantation and you don't want to get hit with a cancellation fee. When the first driver arrives, let him go ahead and start the ride so he is getting paid for his waiting time.

Also understand that you will need two separate Uber accounts to order two cars. You can't have two rides going at the same time on the same account, even if you are traveling together.

Good to know! When I said "early" I meant a little earlier than we actually needed to leave. We would definitely be ready for them when they arrive. Thanks!

OP: I have not checked in the Miami area, but in your situation I would probably check pricing for a shuttle van for everyone plus luggage.

Good suggestion. There are a lot of shuttle companies, but I can't offer any recommendations.

Try Tony Hinds Transportation. I've heard good reviews about him here for airport transportation and cruise transportation. Not sure if he operates in Miami, though.
