1. Parents are responsible for educating their children and public school is but one of the options parents can utilize.

2. Public schools are responsible for educating children.

For the purposes of this discussion, prentend that all parents out there that care about their children's education.

I choose both answers.

Parents are responsible for educating their children of which public schools is one of the options, but as a parent, if I choose the public school option, then they are responsible for educating them.

I would say it is the responsibility of every parent that their child is taking advantage of the education available to them, but also that the ed system is not failing the child, and if it is failing, it's incumbent on the parent to attempt to rectifiy the issue.

Case in point, when I was in 7th grade (back when we walked uphill to school both ways in snow), we actually had an instructor that would tell students that babies are born with a brain that is smooth, and that w/every bit of knowledge acquired, the brain takes on the form we're familiar with. My parents went nuts, and it wasn't long before that instructor's credentials were suspended, then revoked as a result of their actions.

the parents are responsible for choosing a venue in which their child best learns. If it is poublic school that is chosen it is up to that public school to teach them.

Trying to wake our brains up with some philosophy this morning?:lmao:

I say neither statement is true since all parents in the situation care about their children's education. And schools are there to provide education.

Here would be my true statement.

"Children are the ones responsible for taking advantage of the resources provided by the parents and schools to become educated".

I say #1. It's the responsibilty of a parent to ensure his or her child's education. Parents are a child's first educators, and should continue to be even after that child is in school. I'm not sure why some parents think that their job as educator ends once their child enters school.

Unfortunately, too many people buy into #2, and I think that's a HUGE part of what's wrong with our public education system. Parents just take no interest in their child's education. Schools can teach all they want, but parents have to back up at home what's being taught in school.

I'd have to say the first, because educating a child is a lot more than just reading, writing and 'rithmetic. The school (public or otherwise) is responsible for enhancing -- and in some cases beginning -- the lessons children learn.

In my world it is my responsibility to make sure my children are given every advantage available to them. So far, being in school has been more of a benefit because my kids' teachers have more knowledge, expertise, resources and experience that I do across the board. That said, the biggest disadvantage the teachers have to deal with is accountability in testing and having 30 kids with a broad range of ability levels. When this is compared to me I have no accountability (on earth that is) and only 2 children who are pretty similar. My perfect recipe includes a little of school and a little of me. My kids do the basics in school while I undertake subjects the schools can't or won't. My 6th & 7th graders have been exposed to Chemistry, Physics, Anatomy, Economics, Political Science, Geography, Sociology, Technical Writing, World History, the Theater, Museums, Art History and countless other topics the school can't possibly afford to customize to my families specifications because of my willingness to do it.

These days my biggest issue is that the kids simply do not know how to study properly but I'm not calling the school to ask them to do it, I'm teaching my kids myself on my time.

I let the school do what it does best because it frees me up to tackle the embellishments that fine tune a mind, at least that's my approach. To each their own.

I choose both answers.

This.

The way the choices are worded does not make them exclusive of each other.

#1 would be the correct statement if the Parent was able to recoup the school taxes they paid if they decided to go the private or home-schooling route.

But few people are able to pay both school taxes and afford private schools.

As a parent, you have the responsibility of educating your children. To whom much is given, much is required. Children are given to us from God, he expects us to educate them in a way that is beneficial to our society and be great examples in a mixed- up world. Public schools are just as responsible for educating children. They are to provide a place for kids to expand and enhance the knowledge of what they have learned at home. When it is all said and done, I believe that BOTH are required to educate children:teacher:
. We are the first teacher our kids encounter and how and what they learn are set before they even step foot in a classroom for another teacher to take over. That teacher then has the awesome responsibly of adding to the foundation of knowledge that was already built by the parents.

2. Public schools are responsible for educating children.

Parents are responsible to the best of their ability. I clearly could never teach my children chemistry or something like that... I have to depend on public education to take care of that for me.

But EDUCATION STARTS AT HOME. Period.

Number 1 is the true statement, and I agree with ChrizJen .

I think the schools themselves perpetuate #2.
From the moment your child is enrolled in public school- the school takes charge and portrays itself as being the end all be all in education- they know what's best.

I think that both statements are true. When parents entrust their kids to public school, the school has a responsibility to educate the children in the mandated curriculum to the best of their ability. However, I think that statement 1 is more true. First, because the primary responsibility for choosing how to educate the child lies with the parents, and they can choose not to utilize public schools at all. And mainly because no matter how hard a school tries, they can not adequately educate a child unless the parents are also participating in the child's education, especially when it comes to discipline, attendance, and homework/studying.

The parent is responsible for the child's education. They choose where they attend to get that education. Not only does the kid learn in school 5 days a week for 8 hours, but they also learn at home too. So, I'm all for its the parents responsibility.
