Which rides and shows have fire as a feature?

My DS 5 1/2 is brave about most things. He loves the high school haunted house, kids rollercoasters and reading Goosebumps books (by himself! :goodvibes ). But is very afraid of uncontrolled fire. Candles, the fireplace and fireworks are all ok. But he hates the heat and flash of a hibachi flame or even sparklers! He saw a picture of Lights, Motors, Action! and there is no way he will even think of watching that show, even from a distance. I have convinced him that PoTC has pretend fire, so he is willing to try that ride. But what other rides and shows have fire, even for a minute? And is it real flame or pretend, as in PoTC?

I know that certain parts of Fantasmic featured fire. A lot of kids around me were terrified of that show.

Rides/attractions w/actual flame:
At MGM there's Catastrophe Canyon on the backlot tour and Indiana Jones. Then the Fantasmic Show has the whole lake on fire. Also, on the Great Movie ride there is a portion that has a gunfight and some gunpowder explodes.
At MK, you should be ok. Check to see if PoTC will even be open when you are there.
I've never been to AK, going for first time in June, so unfortunately I can't help you much there. And you should be ok at Epcot as well.
Don't know if you plan on going to Universal or not. If so, avoid Earthquake and Mummy ride.
Hope this helps.

Off the top of my head --

Lights, Motor, Action
Fantasmic
Indiana Jones
Backlot Tour

Fantasmic and FOTLK both have real fire in it (although with FOTLK, it's just being juggled).

IllumiNations (HUGE fire EFFECTS) (Epcot)
Fantasmic! (MGM)
Backstage/Backlot Tour (MGM) (several times)
Great Movie Ride (MGM) (50% chance, ask the loading CM where to sit to NOT see the fire scene)
Lights Motors Action Stunt Show (MGM)(as you said)
Indiana Jones Stunt Show (they've made some changes, but I think fire still make an appearance)
There's even a (very SHORT) "Red-flames" SHOOTING UP from the stage at the Festival of the Lion King (DAK)
(there's a fire eater/baton-spinner on-stage at that point.)

Here are the ones I can think of:
MGM: Indiana Jones; plane scene at the end, Great Movie Ride (possible) with the live western scene and the loft fire, and Fantasmic? I believe there's a point where there are flames on the water.

Epcot: Illumination lamps, spaceship earth (fake fire).

Animal Kingdom: Festival of the Lion King; flame thrower/juggler.

Nope, think back.
When the "fire-juggler" first comes on, there are two rather impressive RED FLAMES that shoot out of the stage floor for about 5 seconds.

AND, he lights TRIALS of fire that burn clear across the stage for 5 more seconds.

AND (then) he juggles fire, eats fire, and "lights his bare feet on fire" (well, OK, his feet don't IGNITE, its just 2nd degree burns.) :goodvibes

It sounds like even Pirates will be too much for him. Two or Three of the rooms are aflame.

There is also smodering fire (with smelly smoke) in Spaceship Earth.

The OP did explain that Pirates is PRETEND fire.

You could DEMONSTRATE how it will LOOK,
Get a black plastic trash bag at home before you go and SHOW that if you "wiggle" it in the air (and watch a lamp-bulb reflected in the plastic bag) it "kind-of looks like fire" (no heat at all).

Like many "on-stage magic FX" its an amazing effect until you figure it out.

MK - Don't forget the burning log cabin which can be viewed from the riverboat and BTMRR.

AK - also there's the big fire during the Kali Rapids

Good ones!
But really, the cabin at MK is, "the fire way over THERE that you can SEE".

But, the forest fire at Kali is, "the fire right HERE that you can FEEL".

Backdraft at Universal.

And THAT one is, "the fire that's at that "other place" we never go to anymore so we don't see it, anyway."

:goodvibes

Unless I am remembering this wrong, I seem to remember that there is some fire during the preshow for the Tiki Room. The Tiki Gods getting angry, or something.

All the fire at WDW is essentially PRETEND. Yes, it is real but it can never hurt a guest. A person without a big fear of fire will view it as a cool effect. A person with a fear will view it as a threat. I think a 5 1/2 year old with an fear of fire will not make the distiction between real and pretend when he is in a dark boat in the middle of a room that appears to be burning.

That's not even CLOSE to being accurate.
We must be very CLEAR when posting on a public board.

The fire at PotC is NOT fire of any kind. It is a safe "lighting trick".

The fire at Fantasmic and IllumiNations IS, IN FACT very real, very hot, and very dangerous to work near.
(It is propane gas. Pumped at high volumes and IGNITED to create a spectacular GENUINE INFERNO EFFECT.)

The only thing that is "pretend" about it is that (hopefully) it is under CONTROL at all times.

What makes this IMPORTANT is that the "Inferno Barge" at IllumiNations actually EXPLODED within the past year and was totally out-of-commission for months before they could repair it and safely return it to the show.

That is the distinction between "pretend" fire and "real" fire that I'm making.

Thank you everyone for your help. Now I have a better idea of what to avoid on our August trip! :sunny:

Robo, Did you really read what I wrote? You know, you can try to make yourself clear without shouting.

I agree that the fire in Pirates is pure pretend. It doesn't get hot and it doesn't burn. It is an effect.

I agree that the fire barge and the fire in Fantasmic! is indeed real fire.

Here's my first point, without shouting: While the fire in IllumiNations and Fantasmic! may in fact be dangerous to work around, it is not dangerous to guests. It is an effect.

Here's my second point: People with fears that we don't share are often not rational about those fears. A child who is so afraid of fire that his mom thinks that he won't be able to watch the stunt show from the back row may not be able to differentiate between the effect that does not get hot and burn and the effect that does get hot and burn. He may in fact panic inside the ride and no one wants that to happen.

Try to tell someone who is afraid of snakes that the giant 3-D snake in Honey I Shrunk the Audience isn't real and see how far it gets you ;).

I didn't go on Kali River Rapids this past trip but for some reason (Obviously I could be very wrong) I remember fire somewhere along the ride ... Anybody know if there's fire there or not? If not - what the heck am I thinking about??? LOL
