Which Resort Do You Recommend?

I am planning our family vacation to WDW with my DW, and I am still unsure about which resort to stay at. Our dream resort would be AK Lodge, but that's a bit pricy for us right now. We will have to stick with either a moderate or value resort.

We want something that is affordable and comfortable, but will also have an exciting atmosphere for the kids (DD will be 5; DS will be 2). Any thoughts? What would you recommend and why? What would you recommend we stay away from, and why? Thanks for the help!
Excited for WDW!

When do you plan to go? That will help with the recommendation, as prices vary wildly depending on the time of year.

Do you have a nightly budget in mind?

Without knowing those details, I would recommend All-Star Music, in a Family Suite if it's in the budget. If you want a regular room, then I'd say All-Star Movies. Both resorts have great, colorful icons; Disney character pools; activities during the day and a movie at night. Especially great for entertaining the older one if the younger one is napping.

The Art of Animation looks fun but is a bit pricey.

The most important thing is to keep an eye out for discounts here on the DISboards. Then you can make your dollar go as far as possible.

Tough question would help if we had more info, time of year budget, etc
But since I don't have that info I'll suggest a value and a mod.
Value, ASMu, my DD7 loves the theming and so do I. The swimming pool has the three amigos with squirting water guns. I think it since it's in the middle of the three values the bus service is the best. And they seem to have the least amount of "group" kids, cheerleaders, Warner pop, etc.
Moderate, Port Orleans French Quarter. It's the smallest mod property and I think the most quite. It has a great pool with an awesome pool slide. You get to use all the facilities at POR so it's like getting two resorts for the price of one. Go see Piano Bob at POR it's the best free show at any resort.
I would also recommend getting the free disney free planning DVD and make a family night out of it and decide which resort works best for you and your budget. I hope that helps and give us a report when you return from your trip.
Have Fun!:yay:

That's a really subjective question. Each resort has a group of dedicated guests, and each resort has a bunch of people that aren't wild about it. It totally depends on what kind of themeing appeals to your family. For kids that age, I would think All Star Movies would be a great choice; my kids have always wanted to stay there and never had the chance. Our family loved Coronado Springs, and friends of ours just had a great stay at Caribbean Beach. I would just suggest looking at the resorts on the WDW website and on youtube videos just to get a sense of what your family will most enjoy.

With limited info this is a little difficult to answer.

If you plan to spend most all of your time in one of the parks and only crash for the night at your room them I would say a Value Resort would be ok, having visited friends at some of the Value Resorts I liked All Star Movies.

If you plan to spend some relaxing and/or pool time away from the parks I would suggest Port Orleans Riverside, not too big, great pool and play area for kids plus the added bonus of a relaxing boat ride to Downtown Disney. Don’t forget to take the kids over to Port Orleans French Quarters some evening to take in Piano Bob. :dance3:

Bottom line whatever you can afford will be what you make of it, so go and enjoy.pixiedust:

Since price is an issue I'd take advantage of the fact that your kids are pretty small and would fit well in a Value. ASMO would be a great choice as long as you get a refurbished room.

I hope you have lots of fun.

I agree with this. I actually find the moderates to be a bad value unless your kids are old enough to appreciate the activities, detailed theme, and tranquil atmosphere. If I can't swing the $ to stay at a Deluxe (which only happens about once every 5 trips!), then I always go Value. My favorites are Pop and ASMovies. If your kids love Toy Story then they might really get a kick out of that section of the Movies resort.

Have a great time with your little ones :)

If you are worried about price and want to stay at AK I would look at renting points from the DVC rental forum. You can usually pick up points at a great discount and have all of the benefits of a Deluxe resort. If you don't want to mess with that then I suggest the Pop Century for your value, they have awesome themes and a great food court. If you select mod then I would suggest Caribbean Beach, again, great themes and a great food court plus the pool has just been refurbished and its awesome! One of the best things about these 2 resorts is location, they are right next door to HS and Epcot not to mention DTD its just a short jump to everything with the exception of the MK and AK but still they are just a short bus ride away.
Hope this helps!
Have Fun!!

This is really subjective.

I've stayed at ASMu, my fiance stayed at ASSp. I don't know how his experience was but I did not like ASMu. We stayed over Easter (I danced down there with my dance studio) and it was not kept up really well. The tables in the eatery were always dirty and there was always trash on the floors. We had to walk like a mile to the front where the food court and buses were. It was actually easier to walk across the parking lot to go to ASMo to catch the bus there. Also, we were constantly waiting in line since all buses went to ASMu, ASMo and ASSp. (Not sure if each resort has a specific bus now or not) Now it was Easter and it was super crowded which could have been why but our experience just left a bad taste in our mouths.

We always spring for a moderate rather than stay at a value. But that's just our opinion.

That being said. My favorite resort is POR. I LOVE it. It's so peaceful and tranquil. I love how quiet it is after a long day in the parks. I love the river and the water wheel. It's like being transported to the ol' South where everything's slower and more peaceful. I love it and would probably pick it over some Deluxes. But that's just my opinion!! :)

When my kids were 5 & 2, we stayed at CBR and loved it. The pool there is awesome.

If you are only going for 7 days or less, then honestly staying in a nice resort like Animal Kingdom isn't worth it, especially if this is your first trip. Your priority will be going to the parks every day, not hanging around the resort. As you do more and more trips to WDW your resort stays become more important. I cannot imagine going back and staying at one of the All Star/Pop Century resorts now. However, for the first time down it's a great deal and there's nothing wrong with those resorts.

I'd say worry more about spending your money in the parks than on a nice resort.

Now, if you do have the extra money and want to spend some time in the resort, then Animal Kingdom Lodge Jambo House is a great choice. Trust me, kids love to spend time at the pool, especially at the age your two kids are and there are tons of great resort activities.

Personally, I love Kidani Village, but Jambo is really cool. A previous poster mentioned renting DVC points, and that is a great idea. You can really save money over a cash reservation, but it's still not cheap. If you don't want to rent from an individual, you can use David's Rentals and he'll rent you the points and set up the reservation. I think he charges $13 per point. Go over to the DVC boards, he sponsors one of them. A standard view villa at AKL for one week (7 nights) in June will run you $1235, which is pretty darn good ($177 per night). Heck, a value resort at that same time is going to cost you $1100.

Here's the link to David's, give them a call and talk to them atleast. (I am in no way affiliated with them, just know they do a good job)

We've only stayed in mods and deluxe, so I can't personally recommend any of the Values - I'm sure they're fine, but I don't have personal experience with them. Our favorite mod is POR. It's got the best food court on property, imo. The grounds are beautiful and serene - very Disney magic"ish". The bus service is fine and the gift shop is huge. The staff and mousekeeping are excellent and the pool area is great for kids. They also have space for 5, so if your kids don't like to share a bed with eachother or with you, that extra sleeping space is a great bonus.

Our favorite resort of ALL is Poly, but since you said the Deluxes are out of your budget at this time, I give my vote to POR!

I just did a quick search on David's and it is $13 per point. I checked on a stay from June 4 through the 11th in a standard view studio and the following came up:
AKL would cost 1235
Bay Lake Tower would cost 1599
Beach Club Villa and Wilderness Lodge Villas would both cost 1560

I also checked on a room at the All Stars during the same time and it was almost $1100. For the extra couple hundred bucks I would definitely do Animal Kingdom lodge, or any of the others. Nice thing about the DVC resorts is you'll have a small fridge and a microwave.

That is a good point! We still plan to stay at AKL someday, but I don't want to wait that long to take my kids (or myself)

My DD3 LOVES Toy Story, so ASMo might work well. Thanks for the help!

This is great stuff. Thanks to everyone who replied. Looks like POR and ASMo are the popular choices. But I think I need a planning DVD. That might help too.

We're planning a longer trip, about 10 days hopefully. I need to keep it about $200 per night. It will possibly be either early Feb or Sep, so we can cash in on free dining.

Looks like I need to look into DVC points. This may sound dumb, but what exactly are they? I have heard of them but never looked into it.

Several ideas come to mind...

One, Pricing varies quite dramatically from season to season - especially if you look at all the discounts Disney offers. Also, travel expenses in how you get TO vary considerably by dates and method. When we fly, I can save hundreds often by tweaking our departure by as little as a day- and even if I look among different airlines. If you live near mulitple airports, that's another consideration. MCO is the main airport to Orlando and that's the only one that has ME - but Sanford airport is not far away - and some discount carries fly to Sanford.

Second, a money saving method I've used in the past was to stay just one night at AKL. I prefer to do it on our last night, and spend the last full day mostly enjoying the resort.Heck, if you go that route - you might even want to spring for club level - which will give you 3/4 your food, and all your beer and wine. (so long as you stay near the resort) (or maybe two nights depending on your budget. Multi resort stays do require a little extra planning, but it's not that difficult to chage hotels. Disney will even transfer your luggage ! Free - except for a tip to bell services.)

The mods have several new exciting themed rooms. POR has new Princess rooms, and CBR has pirate themed rooms. In both cases, the rooms they upgraded are in one of the further buildings. So that's the trade off. But the theming is really fun!

The mods themselves have much going for them! You get an in-room fridge, coffeemaker, a great pool, a good sized room, most have big food courts, nice theming, and a TS option. You also get limited room service as an option. The downside of the mods is that it takes a little longer both to get around them by foot and by bus. Oh - also important - CSR has queen sized beds, the rest of mods and values have 'double' sized beds. Only deluxes and CSR have queen sized beds.

Of the values, ASMo has the best outdoor theming, but the interior of the rooms have not been updated- where the other room interiors are newer. (either newer or renovated more recently.) If you pick an All Star, I suggest ASMu. It's in the middle of the three, which means you can EASILY walk to the other two bus stops, food courts, and pools. IF you are going in thenext four months though it may well be too cold to swim no matter.

In the cooler months, resorts Like AKL and WL have the advantage because the pools are hugged by the buildings. (wind protection, and a short walk when you get out of pool.) Also, the mods and deluxes have a hot tub - we can go in the hot tub in almost any weather - or you cna hop betweenthe pool/hot tub. The values have no hot tub, and no water slide. The mods have some excellent pools. The values also lack an in-room coffeemaker, and the rooms are smaller. All values have great food courts, all are super clean.

Among the values one of favorites is Pop. Pop has rather good busing - we've stayed several times and rarely had to wait more than afew minutes for any bus at any time of day -except leaving parks at closing. At park closing all the bus waits can be a little long, esp during busy weeks, but Pop is among the longest. (along with CBR and POR). For me, I still think the Pop buses ar quite great - they are speedy getting TO the parks and fairly good for mid-day breaks. Pop is our favorite value resort.

I think Pop has some fun theming. Then again, the All-Stars are kind of fun to explore, as you get three times the resort. When we stay at the values though we tend to to spend most of our time inthe parks. There are no TS places to dine at the values. In cold weather- if you have regular DDP - you have to go to apark, DTD or a resort to use your TS credits.

Another way we ALWAYS tweak our vacations is inthe duration. If you shorten your trip by one day - you can often trim the costs quite a bit. It depends how much it costs you to get TO WDW though. Rooms are far from the only way to tweak costs: food is another big consideration, skipping park hopping and the water park option. Arriving early on arrival day and staying late on departure day are another way to get more for about the same price (though soemtimes red eye flughts are cheapest).

One more option is the Dolphin. It's located right in the heart of WDW, and rooms can often be had for around $150. You'll need a car (or take taxi), and no DDP- but the resort is on par with the deluxe resorts. The multiple pools are excellent. The dining is excellent.

Still one more option that LOTS of folks like is staying offsite. Some options are very inexpensive. As I said - you can play around with the idea of multiple resorts: staying partly off and partly onsite. Thre are several hotels in DTD that share some onsite perks, there are also several other very nice places rather close to WDW. Caribe Royale is quite nice, and has an awesome pool! I think I've seen specials around $125 there. Another really pretty resort is the Gaylord. In winter, it has it's own ICE! attraction. It also has pretty rooms, nice dining, and a great pool. I think they also have some moderate priced deals. Still other folks prefer to stay in condos. They can be quite nice and some are quite inexpensive - but some can be a drive to WDW. You also might end up cooking in a condo.

If you have any kind of hotel points at any chains you could cash those in. Most resort chains have hotels in the area.

For moderates I have stayed at the Caribbean Beach resort with my boys and they loved the pirate themed rooms and pool area. It has a great swimming area for kids. The beachy theme is great for kids.

AKL is a great hotel too. If you can get a discount then it may be affordable. I would book the standard room which is the cheapest. There aren't animal views from the room you can see them from other parts of the hotel. We were blessed to have pixie dust thrown our way our first stay and got a free upgrade to a savanna view. I now own DVC at AKV and had my first stay in Sept. I had a standard view room which isn't as magical as the savanna view, but there were plenty of areas to view them. It is an amazing resort and if you can swing the few hundred more for the standard view I would do it!

Looks like I need to look into DVC points. This may sound dumb, but what exactly are they? I have heard of them but never looked into it.

You can rent Disney Vacation Club Points (Time share) from someone who is unable to use their vacation points. The site below rents points out for $13 per point and the number of points required per night varies by resort, room type and time of year.

I"ve stayed at ASMu, BC, and POFQ. Loved them all. I'm doing a second trip to POFQ (unless some spectacular code comes up for BC). I'd recomend any of these three.
