Which Order do you Open Your Advent Calendar?

You start at 1. In lots of advent calendars the 24th window is bigger and better than the rest.

Aldi's had them this year. I understand they sold out in minutes. They were $70. I'm thinking next year, they'll order more, it was so popular. I had told DD23 to get one and put it on my credit card, as a little gift for her (she lives 800 miles away). I doubt she got one, so I might make her a Christmas tree-shaped one out of toilet paper tubes, and put a nip inside each tube. She's a teacher, a little something to get her through December would come in handy.
I almost bought the Aldi one! My aunt made her own wine advent calendar one year with a shoe rack and full size bottles...It was a VERY merry December at her house!

My kid doesn't care. Just pulls them out to get at the candy.

That being said, there's an interesting issue with them in my state since food is not subject to sales tax. There's also stuff like gift baskets or Halloween pumpkins. I've been charged sales tax by some stores but not others.

My husband and I had a legit argument about this a few years ago. :rotfl:
I say start at 25 and count down, he says “It’s a calendar so you go by the date”.

Yes, it's a calendar, not a countdown clock. :upsidedow

So no one else just opens all the little doors at once and dumps the candy out into a big pile?

I saw this thread last night and briefly considered sending an advent calendar to my son who is away at college. But I am certain this is exactly what he'd do.

You could send it to DS near the 24th. This way he won't feel "guilty," (not that it seems he will ;)) for dumping them all out at once.

I'm not religious and think of it as a countdown to Christmas, so I start with 25 and open the doors backward. I already know the date, I want to know how many days are left before Christmas.

Am I really the only one who does it this way?

1st Sunday of Advent which can be either in late November or early December.... otherwise it’s not a real Advent calendar but some pagan “countdown to Christmas”.

Maybe it depends on how it's configured? :scratchin

I just Googled some images. Most Advent calenders start with the #1 at the top like for a calendar month. Here is one where the 24 is at the top and one counts down. It is also calls itself a "Countdown to Christmas," for people not necessarily following the religious aspects of Advent.

There is this tree where the 1 is at the top and it would make more sense to start at the bottom and work/count up to the top. Placing the star at the top on Christmas day.

Yes you are. ;)

But seriously, I'd always start at 1. No matter the placement of it on the calendar.

Just googled Aldi wine advent calendar and what I read said they are all sold out but are now being sold on e bay for lots of money. The article said there was one being sold for $300 with a $50 shipping cost. :-)

That's insane! I mean, it's a cute idea and all, but as a PP said, you could easily make your own. With Aldi's wine, even--I understand it's decent, but not super fancy. And I kind of like the idea of the nips homemade one that I mentioned earlier--smaller and easier to handle. The only thing that's holding me back on making one is that I don't know how to ship it to my DD23. Of course, you could also do that with those little "one glass" wines they sell in the grocery store, too. (well, at least in some states you get them at the grocery store).

No, you’re not the only one.

We have a wall hanging with pockets to put treats in. My family also had one when I was a kid. I have always used it as a countdown. Ours similar to this, but with a manger scene.

They’re always 24 days so it’s not really “Advent”. That’s why I think it’s intended to count the days left until Christmas. Some even say “Countdown to Christmas” on them.

That said, my kids do usually also get the little paper ones with chocolates that most people are referring to and two of the three open them starting at 1.

The one year we had one, we started with 1 and worked our way up. That's the way they did it in Christmas Vacation.
