Which naming trend is your least favorite?

My name is a little different, and I have spent my entire life spelling it for people - most of the time more than once since they don't listen the first time. My maiden name is German and 13 letters long.

It wasn't pretty going to a new school and having the teacher stop dead in her tracks when she came to your name on her list. I would always raise my hand and say "that's me."

I didn't want my kids to have to do that, so they have common and easy to spell names - Hannah and Emily.

Me too (but only 11 letters)! I dreaded that first day of school, and the giggles. Even now, when I go to a doctors appointment, I know they're about to call my name when they hestitate, holding the chart. Not only do my kids have common names, they are spelled traditionally.

When I was pregnant with my son, we kept saying we were going to name him Alexander Lowell Scott Bobby Knight Boilermaker Keady <lastname>.

*snork* I am a BIG Chicago Cubs fan and have had season tickets since 1988. When I was pregnant with my DD I would tell people that I was naming her "Samantha Grace" after Sammy Sosa and Mark Grace. People believed me ! I ended up naming her Celia MyLastName DHLastName so I guess I violated the surname rule, LOL!

My son is almost 30 and I gave him an odd first name (Bryceton) and his middle name is my maiden name. He's always loved having a different name.

I thought my ex husband naming his identical twin sons the exact same name was odd. When I told him this, he said he expected more support from a woman who had named her son Bryceton.

I personally would not mind the I's, the strange/altered spellings and the apostrophes if people didn't get so annoyed when I misspell/pronounce their little dawlings name........

Name your kid what you want, but hey, own up to and accept the responsibility for the butchering that will take place.

I work as a substitute teacher and it drives me crazy! A few weeks ago I had a girl with the name Sheyhan. I pronounced it Shay-Han. Nope, it was Cheyenne - Who knew?


Oh, and I forgot about my cousin's daughter (we are not close - lol). She named that poor child "Fancy" - is that a prediction? I still can't get over naming your child after a prostitute in a country music song.

I'm sure people will think I'm a nutcase because I plan on naming my children after literary characters provided my husband is okay with it. I've always said I want my first daughter to be Ananda, a name I read in a Swiftly Tilting Planet (fourth book chronologically in the Wrinkle In Time series).

I also always liked the name Ananda. However, I could never name my children that. I just keep hearing that line from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: "The dog?! You are named after the dog?"

I just wish that people would remember they aren't simply naming an adorable baby. They are naming a person who will have to navigate the world one day as an adult. Condoleezza Rice was fortunate to be so brilliant because that is one heck of an awful name.

We are trying to name our third child and names are always difficult! Both of our kids have meaningful names (they are both named after relatives) and they do have the same first initial, which was not intentional. Now everyone thinks that the 3rd should have the same initial- I would rather the name have some meaning.

I work in schools and have many colleagues who have had some crazy names:
I'Hymunique (pronounced I'm unique)
twins: Lemonjello and Orangejello (pronounced lemongelo and orangelo)
Tampaxia
twins: Anthony and Tony
my favorite by far is Shi-thead, but there was no hyphen. My friend could not figure out how to say the name when she got the student on her list and had to ask the previous teacher. All she could see was Shi*head!

I really dislike boring unimaginative names, like Thomas. Sorry if that is anyone's name on here. It's nothing personal it's just not what I would choose for my child.

I find that really funny, not in an offended sort of way. DS is named Thomas Preston LastName and we love it. I am so happy that we chose a good solid strong name that you can also have nicknames with - though we have never called him Tommy. Thomas just suits him so well. Plus my DH is a Tom and my dad is a Thomas.

When my Mom emailed her friends to announce that she had a new grandson, she got many responses about his name. One man even told her it sounded "Presidential".



I agree with the naming kids nicknames. DH is named Tommy and I hate that it never occoured to his parents that he would never grow up. Childish names aren't cute. The vast majority of your life is spent as an adult.

Some of those naming trends do bother me at times. I think the one that bothers me the most is apostrophes in names.
There are some boy names that I think don't really work well as names for girls. Just recently my coworker's sister and niece visited from out of state. My coworker told them to go the office to get the keys to her house when they came into town. I sort of wanted to laugh when the niece introduced herself as Logan. I would rather name a girl Ashton or Bailey than Logan.

I think the surnames of first names can work well depending on the name and gender. I had a friend in high school whose younger sister was named Quinn which was their mom's surname. I thought that named worked well. My boyfriend's friend and his wife had a baby boy last year. The friend was extremely close with his grandmother who died four months before his son was born. The friend and his wife decided not to learn the sex of the baby before birth. In the last month of pregnancy the couple really got serious about names. The wife came up with the idea to name the baby after the grandmother whether it was a boy or girl. The grandmother's name was Angela and her maiden name was Clayton. The plan was if the baby was girl the name would have been Angela a boy would have named Clayton. They had a little boy named him Clayton.

I know a lot of families who name their children all with the same first initial. I wouldn't do that though.

I almost forgot, somebody mentioned giving the kids the same name, my dad and his brother have the same name, only it wasn't supposed to be. My dad is originally from Ukraine, so maybe this will make some more sense if you know that. So anyway, my uncle is named Alexander, but he was always called Sasha, which is a nickname for Alexander in Russian. My dad is named Arkady, which is a rather common Russian name, but he was always called Alik. When he came to America, he kept Arkady as his legal name, but all the American people know him as Alex, his Russian friends still call him Alik, but everyone else knows him as Alex. I didn't even know my dad's real name until I was 7 and some telemarketer called looking for Arkady, and I had no clue who they were talking about.

So anyway, my uncle ended up immigrating to Israel from Ukraine, and he gets called Sasha all the time. When he came to visit us in America, he used to sometimes go to my dad's store. My dad introduced him to everyone as "My brother, Alex". People got so confused, they thought my grandma must have really had issues naming them both Alexander. But they honestly have different names! My dad just doesn't like Arkady, so he never goes by it. When I bought home my first non-Russian boyfriend, my dad introduced himself as Alex, and then a month later, my uncle flew in, and guess what? He's also an Alex! Tough trying to explain that.

I actually hate the new crop of trendy names. And I don't even want to say any of them, because I'm sure there are a lot of them on the boards.

What happened to 'real' names? Daniel, Joseph, Anthony, Robert, Jonathan, James, Catherine, Anne, Carolyn, Mary, Elizabeth?? What's with these (IMO) strange, trendy, goofy names??

ETA - My Joey and my Danny have been the ONLY Joey's and Danny's in their classes since they started school!! Names like Joe and Dan are now becoming 'rare'. It's weird.

Not big on trendy names either.

I've got a Joey I love the name Joseph.

It was so funny after he was born, and people would ask me his name. I'd tell them, and they would say "well there is a name you don't hear very often."

Oh, here's another one...ZAC-Q. One of my colleagues had ZAC-Q in her classroom and the little boy's mother would be very upset if you didn't spell his name in all capital letters. She said the name stands out more in all caps!

Now I have to call Emily by her first and middle names Emily Honor when we are out in public. Honor was my great aunt's name.

I work in HR and the first thing I see when someone emails a resume is their name. I have not seen too many alternative spellings/extra letters but expect to as the populace ages and children of today begin working.

I understand about having a bit of a smile when a child has your pet's name.
I had a lady shoot me really dirty looks at the vet last visit. Our persian cat's name is Bailey. I figured out why she was annoyed when she called her daughter by name.
