My name is a little different, and I have spent my entire life spelling it for people - most of the time more than once since they don't listen the first time. My maiden name is German and 13 letters long.
It wasn't pretty going to a new school and having the teacher stop dead in her tracks when she came to your name on her list. I would always raise my hand and say "that's me."
I didn't want my kids to have to do that, so they have common and easy to spell names - Hannah and Emily.
Me too (but only 11 letters)! I dreaded that first day of school, and the giggles. Even now, when I go to a doctors appointment, I know they're about to call my name when they hestitate, holding the chart. Not only do my kids have common names, they are spelled traditionally.
! I ended up naming her Celia MyLastName DHLastName so I guess I violated the surname rule, LOL!

DS is named Thomas Preston LastName and we love it. I am so happy that we chose a good solid strong name that you can also have nicknames with - though we have never called him Tommy. Thomas just suits him so well. Plus my DH is a Tom and my dad is a Thomas.
