Which lens to buy next

If I am not mistaken, you just bought a D5000, yes?

If so, you need to know that certain 50mm primes won't autofocus on the camera body. The 50mm 1.4 AF-S G will; the 50mm 1.4 AF D won't.

Basically anything with AF-S in the lens name will autofocus; anything without it won't.

As for the choices between 50mm and 35mm--on a crop body I loved my 35mm 1.8.

Truly though, you might want to get used to the kit lens a bit first, then figure out which focal length would be best for what you shoot.

A wider aperture and shorter focal length are usually purchased for more than just a shallow depth of field. Any lens can control depth of field, and the lens is only 2 pieces of the equation for depth of field.

As far as wich one... it really depends on you and how you shoot. I'm partial to my 50mm. But everyone's tastes are different.

Since you are photographing a wedding, I'd ask the Nikon experts for a good portrait lens.
