Are you guys talking about beluit (sp?) from the Philipines. I've seen a lot of people eat this, but have never tried it myself. That is just a little bit too out there for me . . . . and I'm the natto junkie!

My DH has some coworkers who are from the Philipines. DH asked about baliout (sp?) and the coworker stated that is something that his parents and grandparents eat quite a bit.

Natto doesn't look that bad actually. Its just beans. I'd try it.

Bravo to the OP for trying something new! I find it extremely sad there are people who make it to their death bed having only eaten mac&cheese, french fries, chicken fingers and burgers. Yes, some foods are challenging or acquired tastes, but once you open your mind to them you'll be rewarded.

Bravo!

MTE!

I've had everything on that list except caviar, which I expect to try some time in the future. (Preferably on a little buckwheat blini with some creme fraiche.)

Scallops are definitely the easiest. They have a very mild flavor and a nice dense texture. They are a type of mollusk, but they don't taste anything like clams or oysters. Cooked clams or oysters tend to take on the flavor of whatever they were cooked with. Clams are chewier and have a more pronounced flavor. If you're talking raw, personally, I wouldn't do it at WDW. Escargot is like eating chewy garlic butter on toast. Very tasty.

Before you scoff at others for not being as adventurous as you, you may want to consider if you don’t eat live insects, or drink deer wee, there are those that do who may scoff at you for not being as adventurous as them.

I will never eat a snail or a slug, and I sure won't feel like I've missed out on anything either.

I would not automatically count out *any* cuisine, so although I don't make it a practice to eat live insects or drink deer wee, my philosophy about life and food doesn't exclude them. There would be nothing for anyone to scoff at me about (at least in this area), sorry to disappoint you.

And I still believe it's unfortunate you don't feel like you've missed out on anything by never trying snails or whatever it is you find objectionable, because the fact is that you have missed out. You can wear your closed-mind to food as a badge of honor all you want, but I'm not buying it.

To each his own and all that, but when I have to read people say over and over again how foods I enjoy are "disgusting", I feel I have a right to point out the small-mindedness of such comments (not to mention, it's RUDE.) If I don't like something, that's all it is, it's not my cup or tea or my taste or whatever. The problem is not with the food itself or the people who enjoy it.

We had some excellent scallops as appetizers at Raglan Road. My mouth is drooling now just typing this....

I love all the foods you listed. Then I got confused, because your poll asked was what good, and then your post asked for what was disgusting.

I like all the foods on the list, except for escargot. Never really acquired a taste for it.

Natto, on the other hand, I LOVE. I don't eat it in front of people who are not familiar with it, as it does have an awful smell.

Just curious-what is Natto? :upsidedow

my vote is for snails. i tried them while on the disney wonder. tasted like butter covered rubberbands. never again.

It's fermented soy beans. Whatever it is, it's YUMMY! It's nothing like tofu, soy burgers, or regular soy beans (edamame). There's absolutely no way to describe it, it's just something you have to try for yourself.

You know those little green beans that are in the McDonald's Asian Chicken Salad? Just imagine placing those in a dark hole and letting them spoil and ferment for a few weeks - that's natto :)

Still sounds better than drinking "deer wee" as another poster mentioned. :rotfl:

I saw on Discovery Channel where folks in a foreign country were eating large eggs that were about 1/2 developed into some large bird. They de-shelled it, and you could see a partially formed animal... with some feathers!
The reporter was a sport and tried a bite, and I believe he couldn't keep it down.

My sister's friend is chinese and she tried to make her eat one of those. She couldn't even stay in the room, it was grossing her out so badly.

I'm not an adventurous eater at all - can barely stand the sight of ham - but I do like escargots. It's like eating a chewy piece of bread covered in garlic butter, the escargot itself has no taste at all. Kinda makes you wonder why we bother cooking the escargots in the first place instead of just serving garlic butter and rolls :confused3

We all like different things. Personally the idea of frying a piece of steak in chicken fat revulses me. But, hey, if you like that, go for it !!

There is a basic problem with this thread and the poll, which is that the thread title asks a question, and then the poll asks a question which requires the complete opposite answer that the thread title question asks. I have a strong feeling that the reason escargot is running second in the poll is because many of the respondents are answering the question in the thread title rather than the question in the poll, not realizing that they are asking for completely different things.

Scallops are probably the best tasting of those you listed.
I tried escargot once. To me it mostly tasted like the garlic & butter it was cooked in. I'm not in any hurry to try it again. Not something I would purchase, I had it on a cruise.
I will not eat caviar, Don't like salty foods.
Clams are fine, I usually have these as fried clam strips.
Oysters are okay but I prefer clams.

None of the foods listed is as bad as scrapple IMO. OMG.............:scared:

Japanese fish eggs.

Waht's a Japanese fish egg? Do you mean sushi? If so there are a variety of types of roe used in sushi. The most common of which is the tiny orange kind used in Cali rolls. It has little taste, but great texture - so long as the moral aspect doesn't bother you.

I woudl say classic "cavier' is probably the most acquired taste on your list, and my least favorite. I've only had excargot a few times, but if you like garlic then they are very good. I enjoyed them , I just see them on the menu very often, and the portions tend to be small for the price.

Otherwise I'd say Disney's seafood is good, but not the best I've had. So maybe I wouldn't necessarily judge the seafood ultimately by what Disney gives you. Also, I think some of the items on your list may be hard to find at WDW - so answering your question may be a little challenging. I'd probably decide based on where I wanted to eat - and incuding atmosphere in may choice as much as whic food I was going to try.
If you want to be adventurous with seafood, I'd suggest Cape May. (though I haven't personally been there). I also understand Bluezoo is quite good.

Otherwise I'd say fried scallops and fried clams strips are probably the most basic items (least adventurous) on your list. Raw clams are more like oysters. If you just suck and swallow you hardly taste 'em, but it's proabably an acquired taste.
