The only thing I would try is the scallops..I am in no way a fine diner..meat and potatoes and I am happy..

I don't think there is "disgusting" food among your 5 choices. It's possible it's something you won't like. But disgusting? I don't think so.

I've tried all but hte escargo--hopefully they have it again at F&W. FOr me in order of enjoyment
1. scallops, very mild and sweet
2. clams, yummy al little stronger, but still sweet
3. Cavier--salty, but wonderful with champagne!
4. Oysters--not bad, but personally I do not enjoy the texture alone but as an ingredient in other things no problem for me!
5. Escargot--many say it is the texture you need to deal with but flavor is, garlicy, buttery, lemony--I dont' know since I've never tried but DD and I will be trying them when we have the opportunity.

before I read your post, having just seen the pic, I thought "why is there a picture of natto??" That stinky stuff...blech. My mom never fed it to us b/c she said she couldn't feed us something that smelled that bad. My aunt and uncle love it, of course, and my MIL loves it too...eew. I think it's the slime factor for me...oh, and the fact that it smells like rotten eggs/stinky feet/poop...:scared: (btw, that was my favorite Iron Chef battle...)

So that's not cheese, then?

Definitely scallops. If you're dining at Concourse Steakhouse during your trip I'd recommend (as I always do) having the pan seared sea scallop appetizer.

I agree that scallops are the easiest to cope with for a hesitant eater. But I don't really find any of these to be hard to cope with (except there may be a mental block on the escargot).

I agree, I think Escargot definitely tastes like mushrooms both in texture and taste. Actually I was a little disappointed -- hoped it would be a little more distinctive.

I love oysters, but not so much raw (just don't like the flavor as much). But gimme oysters in a stew, or smoked or fried and I may have to be your best friend. :thumbsup2

Clams are chewy and nutty. Caviar: salty as anything, I like it better on or with stuff than just by itself.

So glad to see someone on here wanting to try something new. Seems like you usually read someone trying to avoid "strange" food ;)

Though there's no way in heck you could get me to try something like those snotty beans. :scared:

I would eat all of them exept the snails. They are horrible plant killers:mad: Best served live with a good dose of salt.

That's what life is about, isn't it? :) Too many people miss too much because they decide they dislike something before they give it a chance. :sad1:

I don't think any of them are disgusting in any way, in fact they are all delicious, but then again we're willing to try most anything (not sure about the natto, the smell would probably kill it for me  ) at least once!

I agree though, scallops, probably will be easiest if you're worried. Try as many as you can though--you may find a new favorite!

Does escargot really have a mushroom taste and texture? If so, I might try them - the garlic sauce might help getting the first one or two down, I might add ;)

I really like scallops, clams and oysters. I don't care for caviar all that much. I have tried a few different kinds-not terrible, but not something I would want a second helping of. escargot I have never tried, nor do I really have an interest in doing so. Snails just fall into the "too icky to eat" category.

Escargot prepared in garlic butter, as Chef's de France does them, do indeed seem like mushrooms. They are yummy!

You cannot even put scallops in the same category as those other foods. Scallops are the sirloin steak of the sea. The are not slimy, fishy, or gooey. They are, in a word, delicious.

Scallops would be the "safest" one to start with but I say close your eyes and point! The one you choose can be the first one you try!
I absolutely love them all-especially oysters on the half shell (raw):thumbsup2

they are like baked stuffed mushrooms...

Bravo to the OP for trying something new! I find it extremely sad there are people who make it to their death bed having only eaten mac&cheese, french fries, chicken fingers and burgers. Yes, some foods are challenging or acquired tastes, but once you open your mind to them you'll be rewarded.

Before you scoff at others for not being as adventurous as you, you may want to consider if you don’t eat live insects, or drink deer wee, there are those that do who may scoff at you for not being as adventurous as them.

I will never eat a snail or a slug, and I sure won't feel like I've missed out on anything either.

Scallops and clams are good staters, though. If one hasn't even had these yet, one probably shouldn't try the cavier first.

I'm with you!

I saw on Discovery Channel where folks in a foreign country were eating large eggs that were about 1/2 developed into some large bird. They de-shelled it, and you could see a partially formed animal... with some feathers!
The reporter was a sport and tried a bite, and I believe he couldn't keep it down.

It was by far the most disgusting thing I ever saw.
