If we were to buy DVC, we could not pay cash for the amount of points we would need right away. We would probably buy a small contract and then transfer additional points needed. Is transferring points easier than renting points? I know it would give me greater control over the reservation, but are there transfer horror stories as well?

not from your end.

I have transfer to someone else 3 times. the first time got an experience MS and it was fine - took about 2 minutes.

the other two times - got a MS who had not been there long. they had trouble told me it was impossible. call back got an experience MS- the first one forgot to change the use year.

that was also the problem the third time.

but that is not problem you will even see.

On the recipients end both are a risk. For transferred points, most members want payment in full prior. The better option is likely to buy small and add on when you can afford it using banking and borrowing and possibly paying cash for weekends in the interim to get the points you need together. If you have someone you work with routinely and are comfortable, you can do away with much of the concerns for both parties.

As Dean mentioned the risk on your end will be the payment. I have tranferred out a couple times and required payment first. However, safety measures are there: paypal protection, credit card protection, transfer agreements, familiarity with tranferer.

However another issue is the limit of one transfer in/out nowadays. It can be tough whether you need a few points or alot of points. A few points and many are reluctant to agree to the transfer because they may need to transfer a larger amount and will not be able to now with the new rules

I would just buy as many points as you could now and skip a year here or there of dvc vacation. bank the points or borrow from your own to get the necessary amount. You could always do a complete rental of points for dvc points in years you dont use your own, or you could always stay on cash, or in regualr resorts

We have transferrred points in a couple of times. Both times have been easy; no real issues.

You can only have one transfer per year - in or out. So, if you needed 78 points to make your ressie, you would need to find an owner that was willing to transfer you 78 (or more) points. You could not get 50 from one person and 28 from another. That transfer would use up the 1 transfer per year for both you and the other owner, so it is not something anyone would do lightly.

If you did find someone with more points than you needed for the year you are in, you can bank the additional points for the next year. Usually when someone is wanting to transfer their points, it is what they have leftover or all of their years worth. I have never had a problem with a transfer. I have used personal checks, paypal and cashiers checks. I look for people with posts history. Never use Western Union!

I tend to agree with the sentiments that transfers, if handled properly, are rather painless. I have transfered points twice and from my perspective things have gone smoothly both times. For me at least, its the only way I'll deal with getting rid of excess points. I would rather bank them than deal with the hassle of renting, but that's just me.
