Which food items are OK to take into US?

We are new to DVC - our first trip this August - so I would like to know which foodstuffs are not allowed into the US. I know that fresh fruit, veg, meat etc are obviously banned, but will we be OK with tea, coffee etc? And what about washing powder and dishwasher tablets? Has anyone 'imported' these. Thanks for your help.

sorry I can't help but I would also like to know the answer to this. My dd has Diabetes and needs to eat first thing and always has weetabix but last year the weetabix in the usa didn't taste the same (don't ask) and we were wondering if we could take some with us.

Thanks, Maria :goodvibes

Maria, I am pretty sure Weetabix is OK, and Christopher, tea coffee and tabs etc are okay too I think :)

It's the dairy / veg / fruit as you mention that are not allowed in particular

Can't tell you about tea/coffee etc but I do know that chocolate and sweets are ok to be taken in (according to the air hostesses at TCD.)

Tea & coffee are fine. It is fresh produce that can't go in & also xmas puds can be a problem because of their density!

Are you sure it was the Weetabix? Could it have been the milk (which you definitely can't take in) making it taste different?

Thanks for the replies. I think it was the salt or sugar content that was different in the us weetabix.

If it was like most other things over there it will be chock full of two and half hundred weight of sugar.

We made the mistake of trying strawery nesquick once - yuck, it was so sweet.

So is dried milk powder allowed? I mean the stuff for tea/coffee, not baby milk formula.

I confess to packing dried milk in the past, and have felt guilty about it ever since, as I know dairy products are banned!

But, from Claire's list, am I correct in putting it in the 'dried foods' category which would mean it's okay to take?

They did have 'sniffer' dogs in baggage reclaim (the first one after imigration control) at MCO in December. The dog picked out someones handluggage. I didn't see what was in the bag, but the dog handler took the person's white customs form and wrote something on it. So be careful what you have in your luggage :)

Hilary I am guessing powdered milk would be ok as they actually let you take in hard fully cured cheese!

washing powder is ok, but i'd advise you take the washing powder tablets as a baggie of white powder looks dodgy!! (my dad is allergic to biological washing powder so he has to take non bio tablets.)

I think if stuff is in a sealed package you shouldn't have too much of a problem.
I've taken the little portion jams, cup a soups etc. and not had any hassle.
