I am trying to decide which DVC to rent for Christmas next year. I am stuck between OKW, and SSR. Which one is best for a 5 year old, with mild austism?

Hi, Both resorts are VERY NICE! :thumbsup2 OKW would have more room,as this was the first DVC built and just has more square footage. A 1 bedroom has a hugh combined sitting and kitchen area. SSR has a food court and has just opened a TS restaurant. You may want to post on the DVC boards, you will probably get more responses. Joan

Thanks for the reply. I thought about that after I posted.

I have been leaning toward OKW, but wanted to see what other people thought.

Thanks again,

I am looking for help in planning a trip the second week of Christmas next year. We are renting DVC points from a member and can not decide which one to stay at. I am looking at OKW, or SSR. I have a 5 year old DD with mild autism. Anyone with some information on which one to pick or information on ones I have not considered? I am fairly new to the boards so I have not worded properly sorry!!!

Thanks for the help!!!

You know your child best, but SSR is more spread out and quieter with more muted/quieter theme music in tones than the other resorts. SSR's community hall also has two rooms - one for art/crafts and quieter play and one with a large tv/video games. SSR also has a zero depth entry pool (which you may or not be planning to use in December).

WLV has the reputation of having the best Christmas decorations of all of the DVC resorts. That being said, you might want something a little less stimulating for your 5 yr old so OKW and SSR would work out nicely.

We were at OKW last year around Christmas with a 16 year old autistic boy. OKW was great, busses came all the time, the boat to DTD was a nice feature, the villa was very nice. We did miss the Boardwalk, which is our home resort, but we'll save that for the next time!

Another thing I just thought of - SSR has carriage rides. A carriage ride through the decorated grounds might be a great way to experience decorations without all the crowd/noise. Depending on when in December you are planning to go - you may want to reserve in advance.

Just an FYI post...the OP had two similar threads running, so they have been merged, that is why there are two apparently separate but similar posts by the OP in this thread :)

Thanks for all the information. Sorry about the multiple threads. I had posted in one area and realized it should have been in this one. I thought I had to repost but it was moved for me. The next thing I knew I had three. I did not know how to delete any of them (sorry I'm new to this). Thanks to everyone who sent a reply. I am thinking SSR is going to be our best choice, it was already my first but wanted to make sure. I think my DD and DH will both love the a more laid back setting. Thanks for the information about the carriage rides as well. I did not know that.

With my daughters sensory issues I am afraid she will be overwhelmed with all the hustle and bustle of BWV. I have only visted there never stayed in the resort. Her doctors have
encourged us to take her to WWW to help in her adjustment in being in large groups of people. We try to give her stimulation in small doses. Thats why the resort is so important to us we spend more time in our resort than actually at the parks. Can you give me more information on what it is like to stay there?

Thanks for the help!!

One thing to consider is that fireworks are audible/visible at night from BWV.

Speaking of fireworks though, if you get on the ferry boat from the MK right before the Wishes show, you can see all the fireworks without a crowd and without the loud noise. You all might enjoy that.

I've taught autistic children, so I understand your concerns. Feel free to pm me if you want to know about the sensory impact of any specific rides/restaurants.

Have a great trip!!!!!!!!!! We've got close friends whose austistic child LOVES    and does very well at Disney. They go all the time.

I can't speak with any degree of knowledge about autism, but you will like SSR. It's quite, spread out, and very relaxing. If your child becomes overwhelmed, it will be a great place to regroup. Good luck and enjoy the trip.
