Which do you prefer, letterbox or pan and scan

  • Letterbox - wide is the way to go

  • Pan and Scan - I bought the whole screen, I want to use the whole screen

  • I don't care - Its just a movie. Get over it.

Letterbox.

One of the reasons I finally got a DVD player was the fact that most movies coming out on DVD offer that format and don't charge extra, as is the case with some movies on VHS.

Mandy and I once rented a copy of The Grass is Always Greener (an old Cary Grant film) that was pan and scan. It was already a comedy, but the pan and scan format made it even funnier (though I'm sure this was not their intention. You see, it was all "scan" and no "pan". They simply cut 25% off of either side of the picture and released it. They never panned to one side of the picture or the other if a character appeared near the edge of the screen.

This resulted in one of the funniest scenes ever recorded on video tape. In this scene, two people were having an argument while standing on opposit sides of a bed. The scene was filmed a few feet from the foot of the bed. This meant that both people were standing in the afforementioned portions of the picture that were cut off. Only the tips of their noses were visible on the screen. The result, a 5 minute long arugment between 2 noses levitating on either side of a bed. It was truly one of the great moments in the history of cinimatic nasel debate (LOL).
