I usually buy whatever is on sale and I have coupons for but always liquid, never powder.
If you have your own septic mound I don't know if you have ever heard it but powder is not advised for those kinds of septics, I know and I learned my lesson last year when I had a clogg and when the septic guy found it , told me that it was some kind of powder detergent I used over a long period of time. Go figure, I never used powder for laundry because of that but it never occured to me that I shouldn't do it for the dishwasher either. Now no powder comes into this house at all!
