Which Digital Camera do you use?

I love, love, love my Sony cybershot. very user friendly and tough (my family is really hard on our equipment)

I vote for the Canon Powershot A series, too. We purchased the A540 a year ago for our daughter and the photos rival much more expensive cameras. We originally purchased an Olympus for her but returned it after taking a few photos and being disatisfied with the results. Many people have commented how great my daughter's photos were from a recent vacation and they were surprised to learn she had a fairly inexpensive camera. We also like the shape of the Canon camera case, it is a little wider on one side which makes it easy to grip. Amazon lists the newer A570 with image stabilization for only $149- it currently includes a free 2 GB memory card and free shipping! I like the fact that the camera can use AA batteries- I hate to be somewhere and have my batteries die and my only option is to recharge.

That's why we have two lithium ion batteries, one in the camera and one charged and ready to go if needed.

I definitely see the difference in lag time between our camera that uses AAs and the one w/ the lithium ion..... the LI camera is MUCH quicker! Also we went through so many AA batteries before... even the rechargable ones. Dh and I both are loving not having to deal w/ carrying multiple sets of batteries!

How much do the lithium ion batteries cost? Mine uses AAs but it eats them so fast because of the zoom, that it's hard to keep batteries on hand.

Well one came in the camera and we just purchased a second one for our upcoming trip.... Off the top of my head I want to say it was $50 but I could be totally off. I know it was MUCH more $$$ on Canon's site, dh just picked one up from Circuit City. I'll check w/ him tonight and post back.

We were eating through AAs w/ our old camera. I'm much happier w/ the LI battery.

I have a kodak, the one that came with it didn't last to long. I love the camera, hate the way I go through batteries.

I've purchased additional ion lithium batteries off of ebay for just a few bucks and they are great. Went to Aruba last Easter and took two of them w/the charger. Charged one during the night and used the next day and vise versa. The battery would last all day long with turning on and off, zooms, etc. Would never buy a digital camera that used AA batteries. You go thru them too quickly and always have to purchasing new ones. A girlfriend of mine has one that uses AA batteries and all I hear her do is complain about them;)

My first camera was an Olympus Camedia D. I lost it a few years back and tried others but missed my Olympus.

I replaced it with another Olympus, the Stylus 400. I LOVE this camera. I bought it for $60 on craigslist and it's been my fave for 2 years!

What about cameras with a higher zoom. I have posted questions previously about which camera to buy my DD. She has a Kodak camera now that she got last year with 3X optical, but really wants a camera with a higher zoom capacity.

She never goes without her camera and has really beaten up the one from last year, but she loves it and takes pictures almost every day. It has truly become a passion of hers.

Any recommendations on cameras with a good zoom. Originally, I was going to try to get a DSL (?) but have decided that I need to go much cheaper than that.

We just retired our Sony Cybershot (it was only 2 years old), and moved up to the Panasonic FZ18. I *really* wanted the 18x zoom, along with some of the other bridge camera options (esp. being able to shoot in RAW) and the other models in the same category just did not cut it for me. If you're looking for an improved zoom without moving to a DSLR, you should really take some time and look at dpreview. Wonderful site, and plenty of information to assist in your search!

I have the Kodak that I mentioned earlier, it has a 12x optical zoom I believe. It was about 250 when I got it but it's worth every penny for me. The picture quality is amazing. It's easy to use too.

Thanks for the info. I have actually been reading a lot about this camera and seen some great deals for it on BF. My only concern is that I have read it really eats through batteries. Have you had this problem?

Yes I have but only when I zoom in a lot. I charge 8 batteries total, 4 pairs basically then bring a back of AA's with me as a backup now but then again I'm a picture hog. I'm working on finding the perfect batteries for it. I've used my camera for arena concerts, small venue concerts, parades, and just random things.

My neighbour (a pro photog) tried a demo Kodak Z12 in Sept - and encountered issues with the battery - especially if using the zoom frequently. When given the demo, she was provided with 6 batteries and found that once partially used, the performance of the camera was sluggish. This seems to be the norm for this camera :confused3

Might be worth reading user reviews (a couple of pro's provided details on this model in the forums) here: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/read_opinions.asp?prodkey=kodak_z712

Thanks again. I think I am really leaning towards this camera. Maybe I can find a charger dock. We have one now for her other camera but I am sure that one will probably not work.

If you want to see any pictures of the quality it takes let me know. If you find a charger dock for batteries let me know. I have one that charges the batteries for 6 hours but I need a good battery charger.

Thank you. I will keep you posted if I find a dock.

DD is also quite the picture taker. She actually takes pictures almost every day. It is nothing for her to take 50-60 pictures at a time. She has mentioned photography as a possible future, so I thought we would try to expand her picture taking capabilities with a little nicer camera.

I am glad for the original poster of this thread. I have learned quite a bit from all of the info.
