Before I head back to Trip Advisor (it was invaluable for planning Rome) I thought I'd ask on here first. :goodvibes

We're thinking of staying in Paris for two or three nights next year before DLP. We've only been there as day visitors from DLP before. I've been busy researching and come up with quite a few hotels that suit us but they're all in different areas. Does anyone have any preferences for a district ie near the Eiffel Tower or near the Louvre?

Hi Elaine

We stayed twice in the Best Western in Trocadero - thats one of my favourite views of the Tower from Trocadero so it was a great location.
We also stayed once at Hotel Wallace which was the opposite way from the Tower - past Ecole Militaires and out that way - still walkable to the Tower though.

Avoid hotels near Gare du Nord or in the Pigalle area towards the Sacre Coeur as they tend to be dodgy areas - rooms rented out by the hour if you get my meaning

The last 3 years I have stayed in the same hotel in Paris-Hotel Riviera. It is on Avenue MacMahon and is a 2 minute walk to the metro and Arc de Triomphe. I have always felt safe here even after midnight. In fact the hotel is just going through a refurb and if you go to Trip Advisor I posted pics of the updated room and bathroom

It is quite handy if it is your first hotel or last hotel of the trip as the Air France airport shuttle stops at the top of the street.

I like the latin quarter. Theres a nice little hotel called the de la sorbonne which is great for couples. There's lots of great cheap restaurants and the louvre and Notre dame are both walkable.

the opera district is also a good place to stay.

Finally, we get a chance to give you some help.....

We stayed in the Melia Vendome. http://www.solmelia.com/hotels/france/paris/melia-vendome-boutique-hotel/home.htm?flagOrigen=r
I'll be honest, I don't remember too much about the hotel but I do remember that when we left we said if we ever come back to Paris we'll come back to this hotel.

The location was, in our opinion wonderful. Really easy to get to, and easy to get to Disney as well. We did use the metro - the Concorde stop was a few minutes walk down the street, but we did a lot of walking direct from the hotel. For example, to the Louvre.

A big plus was proximity to the Jardin de Tuilleries. It became a lunchtime habit to pick up absolutely gorgeous takeaway goodies from the many deli/bakeries in the area and eat them in one of the many lovely spots in the park. For extra treats or presents you're right down the street from some yummy gourmet food shops at Madelaine.

Location, like most other aspects of holidays, is subjective. This area is quite quiet at night, although is within walking distance of plenty of restaurants and bars, but the upside of that is a good night's sleep. If your main focus is a central location that makes sightseeing easy, this is a definite contender.

Happy planning.....

Thank you :goodvibes you've all been really helpful.

Laura - I'd already found your hotel and put it on my shortlist!

Wow really? What a coincidence! I will add too that i never had breakfast at the hotel as there is a small shop down the road where we would buy fruit in the mornings and eat on the go.
