which airport to fly into?

I've never flown to DLR before -- I've always driven down instead (I live in San Francisco), but I recently ditched my car -- and I was wondering which airport is the best one to fly into? I've heard rumors that flying into John Wayne Airport is much better than LAX, and I can fly there on SW for about $120 right now.

Many thanks,
Dave

I've done LAX twice, SNA once.

Even though LAX can't be beat for me because of all the different planes I get to see that I can't here,

I seriously would advise SNA, I was so surprised I ever did LAX and survived.

I have flown both several times from the bay area, and now would only go to LAX if the fares were MUCH cheaper. John Wayne (SNA) is much closer (which saves time and can save transportation costs as well). More importantly, SNA is a lot less crowded. The lines for Southwest can be incredibly long at LAX, but I've never had any waits at all for SNA. If you returned to SFO from LAX, I'd recommend getting to the airport 2 hours before your flight; one hour is plenty for SNA.

Many thanks to everyone for confirming that flying to SNA will save time and avoid crowds. Tickets from Oakland to either LAX or SNA on Southwest cost exactly the same (total of just under $120 RT), so I booked flights to/from SNA.

Now I just have to prevent myself from becoming overexcited about the trip!

We have flown into California 8 times and only once did we fly into LAX. We love flying into SNA. It's so much easier and less crowded and the drive is easier.

I would definately say SNA (John Wayne). I live in Vancouver Canada, and on my way to Disneyland I had to make a stop over in San Fran, but then caught a flight to SNA. Its much closer then LAX. For you I would highly recommend it.

John Wayne is my favorite, followed by Long Beach, as being the best location to fly into for DL. I'd avoid LAX.

Coming from the east, it's about $100 cheaper to fly into LAX, but the lure of SNA is calling us. Also if we get the amex platinum, we can buy a seat and get a seat free. Sweet.
