For those of you flying into New York for your cruise, which airport have you decided to use? With Southwest opening their booking window for the summer on Sunday, I'm starting to look at flights for my cruise. I'm doing Disney transfers, and they will apparently do them from La Guardia, JFK, and Newark. This is too much to think about - cruising out of Port Canaveral doesn't have these problems!

Newark would be my choice, It's a much smaller airport than JFk or LaGurdia, but it is a tad bit further than the other two, but nothing too bad. Newark is usually a lot cheaper for us from Indy.

Since you're taking DCL transfers, I would go with the airport that offers non-stop and/or the cheapest flights from your home airport. I would also take into consideration the flight times.

Otherwise, LGA is the closest to the port (but the smallest airport). EWR is just a little closer to the port than JFK (but probably much faster to get there from - JFK traffic is horrific), and both are about equal in size. My personal preference is LGA > EWR > JFK based on travel time (I hate sitting in traffic).

Pretty sure SWA doesn't fly into JFK. La Guardia is closer, Newark is larger. I'd choose the one with the best time and price - you will be ok either way. :)

It all depends on where you're coming from. SW offers nonstop to Laguardia & Newark from Chicago (midway) but thats about it. Everything else would require a stop.

From Houston and Dallas looking at May fares it's about the same price either way so my plan right now is to fly into LGA but that's because we want to do a few days of NY before the cruise, but if EWR turns out to be a lot cheaper we will stay in NJ and travel into the city each day....

Where did you find out this information about SW opening up their schedule? We are cruising out of NY in August of next year and I will be looking also. :)

You are correct that Southwest does not fly into JFK, but I'm planning on comparing with flights on other airlines too. I do like that my bags fly free on Southwest though. :)

On the Southwest website go to "travel tools" and then "view all travel tools" (at the bottom of the drop down) and it tells you when their next flights will be released. On Sunday they're opening up through August 10th.

I dont know if it would make any sense but SW does fly into Islip but you would need to look into car service to get you to the port.

I love Islip, it is such a small airport but with traffic and what not it could take a long time. But if the fare really is much cheaper it may be another option.

I looked up taxi rates into manhattan and it is $140 plus tolls. So that is good bench mark for planning. And if you were paying the $36 pp and there are 4 of you, it is kind of the same thing.

I think we are probably going to fly into Newark as my dad is driving and meeting us there and there is a hotel near the Neward airport that he can park for the week and we can all go to the port together. It will add depend on the schedule and the price come Sunday AM. I still can't figure out if I want to fly in Friday night or Sat and if I want to leave Friday, Sat or Sun. Decisions, decisions.

I always find that American airlines have the best flights and lower then most....I fly form Miami FL to LGA all the time and no one is as low as AA.

Okay thanks!! Guess I will still be waiting. Our cruise on the Magic out of NY isn't until August 17th but thanks for the info. I now know where to go and look to see about my dates.:)

On the 13th or 14th after they open up booking they will update that page and give the date the next window should go on sale (subject to change of course) It should give you an idea of when to expect the tickets to be on sale though so you can plan accordingly.

MacArthur Airport in Islip is a very small airport whose main airline is SW. The problem flying into that airport is that it's probably close to 1-1/2 hrs to 2 hours away from the NYC port that DCL will be using.

If DCL is using JFK, Laguardia and Newark and you get Southwest you will not fly into JFK as they don't fly into there. If you are using transfers I don't think it really matters because while LAG is probably the closer of the three I would try to get the cheapest fare into any of them. Without traffic, and that's a big one because there is always traffic in and around NYC, your travel times should be around 25 minutes from LAG, 30 minutes from Newark and 40 minutes from JFK. Obviously hese are estimates but it should be relatively close to those times with not traffic. With traffic, oh who knows, worse case add an hour, lol.

I live in NJ and have been to all three airports. Newark is by far the easiest to navigate. Even though it may be a little farther from the cruise terminal it may actually be faster in the long run because of less crowds and less traffic.
