We're considering treating ourselves to the luxury of first class flights next october.... Anyone had any experience with which airline 'does it best' so to speak... i.e. comfort, seat arrangement and facilities, cabin service etc etc

:goodvibes

First is a somewhat rare apple on the MCO-route. BC on the other hand is very common and thus can really make your pick based on your needs, likes, wishes etc.

Have been flying BC for some years now due to medical reasons. My opinions? When just looking at the standard BC product (so not taking into account the special needs stuff) my personal favorite is Aer Lingus. VERY good product and VERY affordable compared to it's competition (for instance you can get AMS-MCO as low as €1400,- where other airlines start at €3100). Good seats and seatpitch, small BC cabin and very good ratio crew versus passengers so I'm finding attendants basically either constantly around me or keeping an eye out and already being into action before I can decide I am indeed in need of...... fill in the blanks. Also like the fact that EI rotates their crews resulting in them having to work both BC and ECO on different haules, seems to be a lot less FA arrogance (and downcrease of service) I have seen with some airlines when FA's have done BS for too long. Food service also best but obviously personal taste and lounge at DUB is very good. At MCO it's the United lounge.

Another bonus of EI is preclearing US CPB at DUB airport, so you arrive at MCO as an national flight and can proceed right on your merry way instead of clearing customs first. DUB airport, well what can I say? Never seen such a quite, empty airport. Refreshing instead of the normal load mobs.

The EI BC product is so populair amongst both tourist, FF and business flyers that is does come with that as a downside. Unlike the "average" experience, you can find EI BC is sold out or close to it months before departure. For instance, this year I didn't get to book my trip (leaving sept 29th) until march of this year. Had to seriously play around with the dates to get proper availability and ending up having to change dates quite a bit (no problem for me so no biggie). On the other hand; the cheapest ticket for this flight was just over €1400,- and earlier july it was still only €1800,- with I think 2 seats left. An increase in price that is much more modest than I generally see with competition when seats are starting to get sold. Because of it's popularity, EI has published they will fit some routes with larger BC cabins, including their flights to New York and MCO. How that could influence price, availability and the product itself will have to be seen at that time.

All in all it's fare to say that I am very happy with EI BC, in case it didn't show. :rotfl2:

Do not like Uniteds product, so have sadly said goodbye to my beloved Continental. KLM sucks, but then again what's new? Lufthansa, what shall we say........ does not protect the integrity of the product. Product in and of itself can be very good, but found some inconsistensies which I do not care for when paying the BC fare. Service........ should be good as long as you are an average Joe passenger. Avoid them like the plague when flying with a disability. Things have gone so sour and apparently it is so much the standard that quite a few crew members on both our inbound and outbound asked me and some more resembled begging me to file a complaint, incl. the captain on one flight. All I can say is I totally understand them.

Biggest thing really is what your personal wants, needs etc. are. Options like lounges, food type, entertainment, seat, size of cabin, flight schedule, type of aircraft etc. etc. can and will make the difference on what is the best airline for your trip.

Where are you planning on flying to? Virgin don't have a First Class, while BA First Class is excellent, but is only available on the Miami route, not Orlando or Tampa.

Don't they have Upper class? Isn't that the same thing? Whatever they have looked pretty good from where I was sitting in premium economy!

Yep, the upper class is just Virgin's branding of first class :)

MCO for definite - had a look last night and it looks like BA Business, Virgin Upper, Aer Lingus Business, and a few others that don't get particularly great reviews!!

It is actually technically a business class - First class is another step up. Upper on VA and CW on BA are business then BA has First on some routes.

It completely depends on your route and the type of plane the airline uses for this route.

Sorry. Just to be clear. Are you asking about true 'First Class' or 'Business Class' - as they are very different. In experience and in price!

I've just checked how much BA First Class flights would be on our dates for April next year.

LHR to Miami is over £7,000 each return!

If I could choose any Business Class it would be American Airlines as I've found them to be consistently excellent regardless of aircraft or route.

Virgin's Upper Class is very much dependent on the aircraft. At the front of a 747 (Gatwick or Manchester layout), in the small cabin, it's very good. In the larger 40+ cabin of an A340, not so much.

And I'm also a fan of Aer Lingus Business Class. Nice aircraft, comfortable seats with good personal space, very pleasant crew who provide excellent service. Not a direct flight from the UK but Dublin T2 is good to transit and the Gold Circle Lounge is pleasant and comfortable for the time between flights. And clearing US Immigration & Customs in Dublin is a definite plus.

I have to say I am definitely leaning towards Lingus - the customs is a massive positive AND i can get a flight (codeshared with Aer Annan) from Southend, which is 15 minutes from home!!

We flew Aer Lingus business class to New York last year & thought the seats & service were fantastic value for money.
The seats are not true lie flat like they are with BA & Virgin but we still managed to sleep most of the way back.
Mrs ABZDisneyFan had never flown long haul business class before & was a bit reticent about what we had paid for the flights before we got on the plane in Dublin.
When we were half way across the Atlantic & as she reclined her seat & guzzled another glass of red wind her comment to me was "I am never flying economy again".
I used to fly business & first class all the time in a previous job so I had very high expectations & I must say they were exceeded by Aer Lingus.
We are flying BA Club World to Miami in November & whilst I expect the hard product (The lounges & seat) to be superior to Aer Lingus I do not think the cabin crew & service levels will be that good.
If you can get a good fare for Aer Lingus my advice would be to take it.
I've included a link below to a trip review which explains the Aer Lingus business class product in more detail, I can confirm that we got the same level of service that the chap in the review received.

Not me, but my parents (travel Virgin) were upgraded from Premium Economy to Upper Class on a trip this year. It sounded lovely - beds to sleep for the night flight, lovely choice of food, bar etc.

so DD and her husband just got back from their alaska/WDW adventure last night..
their transatlantic segment coming back home was in first class..

lie flat seats and when you're ready to go to sleep you tell the flight attendent who puts a mattress on top of the seat, covers it with a sheet and gives you a big pillow and comforter....
oh and you get pajamas to sleep in....
its an 11 hour flight, so there's time to put in a good 8 hour sleep..

needless to say, they enjoyed the flight :)

Very nice - what airline was that?

Sounds like Virgin Upper Class, in which case it isn't First Class, it's Business Class as Virgin don't offer a First Class product.

Still beats 11 hours in Cattle Class though ... :thumbsup2
