Just wondering which action camera would people recommend for disney world...I was thinking either the Gopro Hero 9 or the Insta360 one R (with the 360 mod)? or maybe another camera?

I was also thinking about a DJI pocket 2 o, but that's not waterproof. Could still be worth it?

Any advice is appreciated.

The latest iPhone with a waterproof case on it!
The iPhone 12 is rated to survive up to 19.6 feet (six meters) of water for 30 minutes,
so adding a waterproof case would likely not be imperative.

No one does, its a scam they say they're water rated but don't stand behind their product if it goes south because of moisture damage. I had a $200 Samsung watch that went on the fritz, which I was super careful about ever getting wet even though it was waterproof and apparently I sweated too much with it on once and it got moisture in it and stopped working. They didn't support it, was the most maddening thing ever.

There are better models out there now, but I use a Sony FDR-X3000, I can't move on from it because of the pistol grip it has for shooting, it's so small and has optical stabilization (fits in a cargo pocket comfortably). From what I read Sony isn't interested in continuing this line anymore but I wish they would update it.

Dis Dragon, exactly....hence why i was asking about action cameras. I will bring my Iphone 12 for pics and vids, but action camera for other vids i wouldn't use my iphone 12....

Depends on how you plan to use those videos. Are you interested in something to share with your family after the vacation is over or do you run a blog or plan to post it online? Will you edit the raw footage or just show it as is? You will then need editing software to make modifications. Video requires a LOT of time/planning/execution. How much of your vacation do you plan to spend taking videos vs. enjoying time with your family?

I have a gopro hero 6 and a canon g7x mark 2 but I also use my phone camera a lot. The key is tripods. There are some really great tripods out there for awesome and low prices.

Now I actually love 360 cameras. I have and use my Samsung Gear 360 a ton and at WDW there is a lot of great ways to use the format... but... if you've got Insta360 one R money, then by all means get the 1" sensor. You will not be disappointed. I can't explain why it's like magic but it does things the Hero 8 can't and I lost faith in that brand, so maybe Hero9 will out perform the Insta I don't know.

What I know is that when you look at the clips on the Insta website they are not cherry picking the best of the best. That camera performs that well. It has become my absolute favorite crash camera if I need premium video in a destructive environment.

Another camera I bought as a toy is the Lenovo Mirage VR camera. They discontinued the project and the cameras could be picked up for $99 a while ago. Shooting VR180 is a lot cooler than I expected and google has released some tools to make converting the file format pretty seamless. It's not an action cam or waterproof but I kinda put it in that category just because it's a bit of an oddball that doesn't really fit anywhere else.

I like the idea of the insta360 one r, but i can't really think of a way to use it in a park...the ideal way is to use the long disappearing stick but parks don't allow that long of a stick.

I had a Hero 7 down there in April and worked well, except in low light. My dark ride footage (HM, ToT) is unusable.

Just remember that you can't use a telescoping handle at all. Found the standard (orange) padded handle to be very comfortable. Biggest problem was that some of the videos were upside down because I started recording before the camera could adjust from hanging from my carabiner.

Yes i know you can't use any extended handle/selfie stick...

I was just there with my slew of cameras and I ended up using the Insta360 Go2 and the DJI Pocket 2 a lot. The Go 2 was great for using in the pool and for POV shots on rides using the magnetic medallion mount. I used the Pocket 2 for some in park shots and slower moving rides. Both of them have awful low light performance, so I didn't get anything usable in the dark.

I brought my insta360 One R as well, but never ended up taking it out of the bag. The inability to use an invisible selfie stick limited the use of the 360 mod, and the 4k mod didn't have many advantages over the other 2 cameras. I don't have the 1" mod.

Thanks for the info. I thought the one R had good low light capabilities, even better then the gopro hero 9. I'm still unsure what I want to get, but the more i'm reading and watching, the more i'm leaning towards the gopro hero 9 (or 10 if it comes out in September as rumored).

The One R stayed in my bag mostly because of its size. The Pocket 2 and the Go 2 were far more convenient to actually carry on my person.

I know the disappearing stick trick is what everyone talks about, I rarely use it. I just don't take a lot of pics of myself. My favorite way to use the Insta360 in the park is clipped onto my mirrorless's hot shoe, rolling video whenever I start snapping pics. It catches facial expressions I miss by fractions of seconds and it gets that different vibe subjects let out right after the shutter of the main camera clicks.

The Insta360 1" model has 4x the sensor size as the gopro9 and the difference is shocking. The insta's pics rival those of my RX100 for what they are, and the image stabilization is fantastic. I can't imagine a better casual dark-ride camera.

The one r 1" is within mm of the Hero9. A little narrower but a little taller. The HD2 is about a cm smaller in each direction but that's without any waterproof encasement, which puts it back in the bag for a couple hours most days down here.

Really, I'm just exuding the fervency of the newly converted. There's much to recommend the GoPros, and the workflow on the Insta is a bit of a slog, but that huge sensor really wrecks the competition till GoPro brings out something that compares.

ok thanks for the info everyone...i still haven't decided...i'll wait to see what the gopro 10 brings

Last time we were in Disneyland (2016) was the first time I did a lot of video and I used a Sony X3000 action cam in a waterproof housing (but I drilled a hole in the front for the microphone to pick up sound). It did an excellent job although its low light performance was...less than ideal. I still use the X3000 on my dirtbike helmet because its optical/sensor stabilization works better under the tree canopy than my newer action cam, the Hero 7. But if I were to go to Disneyland now, I'd take the Hero 7 because in good light, its stabilization is even better than the X3000 plus it can shoot at 4K @ 60fps which gives me flexibility for zooming/panning/slo-mo in post processing since I output to a 1080 file. But low light would be worse than the Sony due to the fact that the GoPros rely partly on having a sharp image in order to apply digital stabilization.

So yeah, if those post processing features are useful to you then I'd recommend a Hero 7 or higher. I'd definitely pair it with a short handle, even a floatie handle (approx 10" long designed for keeping the camera afloat in the water) works well. This gives you a very secure grip (although ALWAYS use a lanyard on your wrist) for recording on rides.

I also have an Insta360 X2 which I'd definitely like to bring, too. However, its value will be limited if I can't use it with a selfie stick (the typical selfie sticks used with 360 cameras are banned in the park). If you don't already have one then I wouldn't buy one for Disneyland. The action camera will suffice plus it will easily withstand the rigors of frequent but casual use. With a 360 camera, you really need to ensure the lenses are clean before recording and they are VERY delicate and easy to scratch because 1) they're bulbous and 2) they're on both sides of the body. I have clear lens guards on mine but they reduce image quality a bit. A 360 camera also entails additional work flow, too, (assuming you want to reframe shots vs. just viewing unedited 360 clips) so you really need to be into it to make use of it.

I agree that good video requires work and, particularly, a lot of pre-planning. However, I've found that you can make a pretty decent video without detracting from the Disney experience. The amazing stabilization, wide field of view, and deep depth of field typical of action cameras make them much more of a carefree tool to use for recording in Disneyland than a smartphone. I never had to ask people to pose or repeat a motion; I just shot as we went along. I also had pre-planned shots I wanted to capture and again, I did them as we went along. No one had to stop and wait for me, and we all had a great time. At least that's been my experience. And yes, a good video will also require very disciplined culling and editing afterwards.
