I agree that a lot of the character dinner buffets are pretty awful food-wise. However, another buffet that might interest you is Biergarten. The food is better then most lunch/dinner buffets and the band that plays is very entertaining. It is a nice festive atmosphere. Bome is nice because it gives you a chance to check out AKL. If Boma doesn't seem like it would interest your mom, have her take a look at the menu for Sanaa.

If you and your DH are looking to give the kids to your mom for a night and you don't have a Shula's where you live, head over to Shula's for dinner. They have the BEST steaks on property. Then after dinner head over to Jelly Roll's on the Boardwalk for a night of drinking and singing. Shula's is not on the dining plan if you are using one.

50's PTC at DHS is pretty good. We usually go there for lunch on our DHS day. I am sure your mom would love the atmosphere. I would eat there before eating at HBD.

Those are just some of the suggestions I have, given the information you provided. Each place I suggested I would eat at before eating at the places on your initial list of 5 (I didn't count HDDR in that list since that is the one I would have voted for). :thumbsup2

I looked at Biergarten, but I think my mom would probably refuse to eat there as well (I know, impossible).

These are just dinner options - we are on the DxDP for the 4 days (so Shula's is out, sadly :sad2: I was hoping it would be on the list, since I'd heard so much about it - but alas ), 50's PT is our lunch for our HS day - and yes, I think that may be the meal she's the most excited about. :)

The group will consist of myself and my husband, my mother, and my two 15 month olds. No one in my group enjoys seafood except for my husband, and he only likes shrimp and swordfish. We're very much a meat and potatoes kind of group, but I am interested in branching out -- my mother, however is the opposite of culinarily adventurous - so we need places that offer "normal" food as well as a few things I wouldn't make at home.

The fact that none of us are fond of seafood is the reason why I'm on the edge with CA Grill. Everyone raves about the experience, but our menu options will be extremely limited.

I said the only ones on your list that I particularly liked were 'Ohana and California Grill. However, what makes California Grill special is their sushi and flat breads. The pork is also very good, as is the ostrich if it happens to be on the menu. We were not impressed with their filet at all and if I'm not mistaken, that is the only steak on the menu. We have yet to find a dessert there that we like, but have always been able to get the cheese plate for dessert. They probably have the best cheese plate on property. However, it sounds like considering your food preferences, you'll be disappointed at Calif Grill.

On the DDP we've gotten good steaks at Flying Fish, Yachtsman, Le Cellier, Turf Club, Artist Point, Citricos, Narcoosee, Kona, Maya Grill, Mama Melrose, and Jikos.

You might want to give the Turf Club menu a look. We think it's a hidden gem and it sounds like something you guys might like. The prime rib, NY Strip, lamb chops, and pork chops are all really good. Here's the menu:

Other options might be:
Whispering Canyon at WL: all you can eat skillet (ribs, pulled pork, chicken, corn on cob, potatoes, etc)
Maya Grill at CSR: ribeye, beef tips, beef shoulder, pork chops, Prime Rib, Kobe burger

Of the choices you have, I picked O'hana and HDD. But, I wouldn't say these are my favorites. We do try to get to HDD every time we are on the dining plan. We liked O'hana, but didn't love it (though it might be due to not being seated in the main dining area on our two dinner trips their).

The two restaurants we visit most frequently are Boma and Cape May.

...The pork is also very good, as is the ostrich if it happens to be on the menu....

Sadly, there is no more ostrich in WDW. I don't know if it was price related or supplier related but all the ostrich dishes were removed from the menu's. It stinks cause I loved the ostrich appitizer Jiko had.

OP, where in NY are you? There is a Shula's in NYC, so if you aren't far you could always give it a try there. Or you could just make it an excuse to go back. :thumbsup2

With all due respect...my point was simply that you offered only 6 rest. and asked for the 4 favorites...implying that the 6 were everyones favorites. I pointed out there are many good and better choices at WDW.

That said......you need not worry, since you only want opinions that agree with your very very small group.....I will not bother to respond to your posts in the future....

Have a great next vacation

Thank you so much! I'll check out the Turf Club menu, I had also considered Whispering Canyon, but since I think I'm leaning towards HDD and it seems to be mostly the same food, it might be redundant?

Sadly not close enough to NYC :( We're about 6 hours west - I'm actually closer to Canada than anything else! :) The next time we go back I doubt we'd be using a dining plan, since we'll have two older toddlers who I very much doubt will want to sit through three meals a day, so I might have to wait until then to try Shula's since we'll be paying OOP anyway. Thank you for your suggestions!

I offered 6 restaurants because those are the ones that my group agreed to try, and I'm trying to select the best of those. I didn't imply anything of the sort, simply that those were my options. I never said I only wanted opinions that agree with my group - as you can read other people have suggested other options and I have graciously and gratefully accepted their opinions. The difference is you simply criticized without offering any alternatives, which leads me to believe you were only commenting to turn up your nose. In which case, I am fine with you not responding. I am not narrow minded in these forums, but I don't like snootiness.

This is sad. I can't vote. My family and I have been to DW 5 times on DXDP and we haven't even tried any of these.... :sad2:

Can't believe Ohana is winning.......

I ate Dinner here and was turned off from service to food with the exception of the dumplings which werent mind blowing but they were edible, was terrible.

DW is convincin me to give the breakfast a shot so we are but i will not go back for dinner

Really?? Where do you usually eat on the DxDP, I'm curious! :)

See, this was my worry. I started a thread not long about about the quality of O'Hana - when I first joined the forums I heard nothing but rave reviews, but lately it seems like I've been hearing more and more of this ^. I'm very torn..

The only one I voted for was California Grill....this is a must do for us. The food is wonderful and you just can't beat the view, plus the service has always been spectacular. We have eaten at Yachtsman's a couple of times, and even though it is good, it isn't my favorite.

Only found 2 worth voting for; YSH and HDD. The others leave me underwhelmed.
