Looking for a DC hotel that is decent, safe and near public transportation.
Thanks!

Your best bet is to stay in the suburbs along the metro Line. There are a number of hotels at the King Street Metro stop on the Yellow/Blue line. From there, you can walk to the Metro station or the commuter rail (VRE) station. You can also walk into Old Town Alexandria at night for dinner, shopping, and nightlife. I know there is a Hilton and a Hampton Inn there. I think there might be an Embassy Suites as well.

If you are looking at VERY low budget, I suggest the Sleep Inn in Rockville, MD just off of Shady Grove Rd.

It is located in a business park, so there isn't anything 'scary' about the area. They offer shuttle service, OR you can just drive to the Shady Grove Metro station.

I stayed there for the first time in 2004, and then again last year - and the property is nice, safe, and well maintained. In 2004 I paid less than $50 a night - it's up to around $79 or so on average I think.

As the PP said - King St. is nice! Lots to do, and it is very pedestrian friendly! So much to see and do in Alexandria, you might not want to go in to DC! HAHA :)

Adjacent to the King Street Metro there is in fact an Embassy Suites, Hampton Inn, and a Hilton. There is a Wyndham timeshare property there as well - it shares a the corner lot with the Hilton.

There is also a Kimpton hotel in the area - sometimes you can get decent prices at Kimpton properties through websites like snique away and groupon getaways.

Silver Spring is also a very convenient location - there is a Double Tree, Hampton Inn, and Homewood Suites there. The Double Tree has its own parking garage - the other two adjacent properties share parking areas and have access to the city owned parking garage next door.

I hope that helps!

We always stay at the Marriot in Crystal City. The Metro station is right in the lower level of the hotel and you are just a short ride from Alexandria in one direction and DC in the other.

I have always found that DC hotels are significantly cheaper on the weekends 'cause most business is done during the week. You can get a really good price for Friday or Saturday night.

I was going to suggest the Marriott Crystal City as well. It's older but still nice. The Metro station is a short walk from the 1st floor level elevator.

not sure exactly of when we may go. I have airfare I need to use and DC is one of the more reasonable places to use it at. Thanks for the ideas! I will be exploring them soon! Any more, I would be interested!

The Marriott at the metro center. You will be a short metro ride from it all.

We stayed at Rosslyn Holiday Inn Ross Bridge a few years ago. We felt safe and a 5 minute walk or less to metro...Great breakfast too..

Look into bed and breakfasts downtown. My friend and I (both young females) found one for about $40/night and it was lovely and safe. Sometimes they're hard to find online so look for referrals on tripadvisor. It was really nice to be walking distance (or a quick metro ride at worst) to everything!

I'd also stay in the suburbs; plenty of suburban hotels offer a free shuttle ride to the nearest Metro station

If you're a member of the Auto Club, http://www.choicehotels.com offers tons of hotels (Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, Quality Inn, Sleep Inn, etc.) all over the area for moderate rates of $125.00/night or less (for DC anyway).

http://www.wyndhamrewards.com also offers hotels in all price ranges from Travelodge all the way up to Wyndham Resorts; $93.00/night will get you a room at the Hawthorn Suites By Wyndham in Alexandria.

HTH.
