I came to spend the week with my honey in Delaware and we decided to drive to New York City tomorrow and Sunday. Where's a good place to stay that's safe and preferably cheap.

Newark....cheaper hotel, cheaper parking!

Yes, stay in Jersey. Meadowlands or Secaucus (I've stayed at the Sheraton). Take hotel shuttle to train station (NJ Transit). Free parking and about $75 on Priceline.

One stop to Penn Station near MSG and Macy's. Very easy. NJ side actually felt safer than Penn Station, lol.

Well, I would shoot for midtown using Priceline. 4* or above maybe. You could get a really great hotel, within walking distance of things you want to see. (if you have certain plans, pick those areas to bid upon)

I booked DD a room at Doubletree suites Times Square, everything was right outside their door. I used Hotwire, so I was pretty sure that was the hotel I would get.....

Better Bidding website has great tips on how to use Priceline and Hotwire.

We always stayed at Parc Central WiFi you can usually get good last minute deals for on Expedia.

The Hilton attached to Penn station in Newark isn't bad, and you can take the PATH into NYC, but it's still $200 a night, not including parking. I thought they were doing some work, and the PATH from the JC hotels was not running on weekends?

One of the guys from the base here said to stay in North Bergen, NJ and we found a great deal at a days inn that has a shuttle. Anyone ever stayed there? Or that area?

don't try to stay "cheap". My daughter and friend went to NYC and tried to find a cheap hotel. This was not possible. The only reasonable priced one (comparing with our Midwest hotels) was what I called "the hooker hotel":rotfl: Honestly, they told her they had roof top for parties, clothes optional:rotfl2: So, they paid extra for the W in times square and were very happy. They were close enough to walk to TS and other attractions, and felt very safe. Good Luck:stir:

Try Hotel Tonight. Its and app that posts discounted room rates for the current day

Seriously? :scared1: Except to use the airport I would never send someone into Newark to stay simply to save money.
Well, maybe those ISIS lunatics.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I stayed pretty cheap right in times square at the Millennium- I used priceline and got it for 179.00 a night! It was a nice hotel.

I've stayed in New York at nice hotels for as little as 99 a night. This weekend isnt during the busy season so last minute you can stay in nice hotels a tiny walk away from Times Square for that much.

If you have a car.... seriously think about a hotel near the subway line and then ride the subway into Manhattan. I was on a tour bus and could not believe the 2.5 congestion from JFK into Manhatten. While stuck, I saw the subway quietly going overhead into Manhatten over and over again.

When the tour was over, I stayed at the now closed PanAm in Elmhurst. Free airport transfer pickup... For $130 a night, it was a 25 min ride into Time Square for $2. With the hotel savings, I had no problems paying for the attraction costs and good restaurants at night.

During the tour, I think we stayed at the Holiday Inn across from the Newark airport. It's around your price range... check out the reviews...

hi, I live nearby and looked into it. it appears to be right next to 1 and the turnpike which is about 15-20 minutes into the city as long as there is no major traffic backup. it will be safe but you are on highways, so no good view.

like others said, avoid newark. IMHO i would rather walk around north bergen at night than newark. also i live here so i don't use the hotels (so I have no idea what they are like inside) but there is a comfort inn in Edgewater which will have NJ transit busses and is super safe next to a trader joes, and near the hudson. if you can get a deal at a hotel in hoboken or weekhawken that would be closer.
