We'll be leaving Montreal on 01/20.......we'll need a decent, not-too-expensive place to stay that night.
At this point I'm guessing that we'll make it as far as Virginia or the northern part of North Carolina.
Although the hotel will just be a place to crash for 8 or 9 hours, my family's safety is the most important thing to me. I don't think I can stay in one of those roadside motels. I'm sure that the majority of them would be fine but I've heard too many stories.

Also, it's just not in me to "wing it" and see what we pass.

Ideally, I'd like a Fairfield or Holiday Inn Select.....or similar - esp. if there's a free continental breakfast included!!

Thanks!

Look into the chain Hampton Inn. Consistently good quality, almost always a free continental breakfast, and inexpensive. I can't recommend a specific place to stay. Maybe go onto some of those chain's websites that you have mentioned and see what's out there.
Stay away from Best Westerns. They've gone downhill.

Can't help you from Montreal, we leave from Toronto and drive. Try getting a CAA trip book and they give you good suggestions and tell you what is at the hotel and if they have breakfast. We drive straight through and end in Kissimee and stay at the Comfort Inn. Very clean and nice with a fridge and continental breakfast.

Hope this helps

Check out usastar.com . This site has an I-95 guide that is really useful. It basically lists all the hotels, restaurants and rest stops down the entire length of I-95. We've driven down from NJ a few times and it's always been a great help to us. My only other advice is to avoid staying in the Roanoke Rapids area. This is right below the Virginia border. We made reservations at a Hampton Inn there and were really disappointed when we arrived. I assumed all Hamptons were fairly new with interior corridors, etc. This particular Hampton was a remodeled 50's looking motel with exterior entrances. The room was remodeled and clean but the bathroom showed it's age. It was also so small, you pretty much had to climb into the shower to close the bathroom door!!! It was ok for one night but I would have been happier somewhere else. The other hotels we saw at this exit didn't look great either.
Have a great trip.

We stayed at a very nice Fairfield Inn located in Lumberton, N.C. Our grandson got sick, and we had to take him to the hospital in Lumberton. The employees at the motel were VERY accomodating, and we had to stay an extra night. They had a nice breakfast, motel was super clean...I'd highly recommend it. An easy drive from there to WDW.

There's a relatively new Fairfield Inn (less than 2 years) at Emporia. Virginia almost the last exit before North Carolina. I used that as a stopover from Orlando-Boston drive. Very nice, very basic and not too expensive.
