Where To Stay at Gatwick

I was just about to book the Gatwick Hilton for the night before our flight.

I then realised that we are flying from the North Terminal - we usually fly with Virgin but this time have a First Choice flight.

How are the transfers to the North Terminal? Would we be better staying somewhere else?

One of the reasons I was booking the Hilton is they offer a Valet parking package. We usually stay at the Alexander House and they provide private taxi transfers to and from the airport and starts our holiday off with a bit of luxury (but their prices seem to have doubled this year )

What we definately don't want is the hassel of getting on a bus on arrival to collect our car.

We are flying with virgin but have booked (direct) with Sofitel Gatwick (was Le Meridian) its a better hotel than the Hilton.
If you book direct with teh hotel, yoiu get a better rate than one of the internet booking companies.
If you then join the Sofitel priviladge card (free) then you get auto room upgrades.

Looks good - only problem is I have 2 children and they don't seem to be able to quote for that. At the hilton I could get a family room. Just not linked to the north terminal!

We have booked a room for us and our little 'un from them so they might have family rooms as well?

There is a monorail link between terminals (2 mins tops) and runs every 3-4 minutes

I prefer Hilton over Sofitel - although last time we stayed there it was Le Meridien. It's only a short ride on the monorail if you stay at the Hilton

hi the softiel do family rooms, we have one for 2 adults and 3 children - just give them a ring or email them , i got a much better rate with them than on any other websites


But avoid there breakfast its so expensive..about 18 a head i believe, we eat in the terminal.

hilton for me everytime - great hotel and yes just get the monorail to the other terminal

I vote for the Sofitel. It is no big deal getting from the North Terminal to the South by the monorail, but it does add a little bit of inconvenience when you have cases and children etc, and the Sofitel is also a better hotel imho.

The Sofitel do have family rooms which work out quite expensively, but if you don't want to pay, perhaps you could ring them, they do have sofabeds, and could perhaps put a small put-up bed in the room as well, if you didn't mind the lack of space.

Another vote for the Sofitel - nice hotel for one night pre-flight. I quite like the atrium rooms because I enjoy people watching and the "buzz" (although it doesn't make rooms noisy).

We have never had breakfast at the Sofitel: sometimes get a take-away McDonalds (from within the terminal) and eat it in the room, sometimes just eat when we get to the airline lounge.

We have stayed at both the Sofitel and Hilton but prefer the Sofitel. We have booked to stay again this year before we fly to WDW. I love staying overnight at the airport I think it makes the holiday even more exciting

Just got a quote from Sofitel for a family room with Parking (valet) for a total of £273.

Hilton are quoting £265 with summer special parking and £269 with valet parking.

We might be better booking the parking seperately as we only need 9 days and they both include 15 days.

Prices at the Alexander House arn't looking that bad after all

We stayed at the Ramada Plaza near Gatwick - it was clean and comfortable but nothing fancy. They have rooms for families - we were in a room with double bed, single and then a pull out single (bit like the ones that are stored under a single bed). Don't know what sort of parking deal they do but there is a shuttle service to Gatwick Airport - only a couple of quid each. It might be worth a try.

We stay at Trumbles. A great little family run hotel. They take you to the airport and pick you up again when you return. You also get a full english breakfast. For us staying in October for 10 days it's costing £100 (£70 family room @ £3/day parking).
