Where to sit on a plane

In terms of a "better ride", is it better to be in the middle, front or back of a plane? Or doesn't it matter? We currently have seats in row 13 of a 22 row plane, so we're almost in the middle. I can change them to either row 5 or 6. Where do most of you like to sit and why?

Front is a better ride. Back is the safest.

I have found that the further back, the noiser it is. I definitely prefer the front. Plus you get out faster.

Try this website. It will tell you the best seats on a plane and the ones to avoid. Just know the type of plane you are flying; 737, 757, etc.

LOL! Don't we all! Since I quit traveling for business, I have not been able to enjoy any of the "perks" of flying First Class. Sure can't afford to pay for it!

Anyway, if I have a choice, I prefer the front - easier/quicker to get off, quieter and usually faster to get a beverage. However, I think the back is safer, if you ever worry about that. I don't - if it's my time, it's my time. Nothing I can do about it!

I don't like to sit near the lavatories or the galley if I have a choice - too much traffic up and down the aisles for me. Also don't like to sit in the row immediately in front of those as the seats do not recline. I also try not to sit in the bulkhead seats if I have carry on, because in some planes, there is no seat in front of those to put your carry on under. Often the overheads are full when I board and I do not like it when my carry on has to go behind me somewhere!

Enjoy your trip, Dopey Sharon!

P.S. Nothing wrong with the middle of the plane, especially if you are all seated together!

Thanks for the replies. I changed to the 5th row. I've only flown first class once, coming home from Las Vegas, and boy was it nice! I probably will never get that opportunity again!

I figure, if the plane is going down, it really doesn't matter if I'm in the front or back, so I don't worry about that stuff. I'm with Carol, when it's my time there's nothing I can do about it anyway.

Thanks, again! :D

I checked the seatguru.com and am happy with my blind selections. I got a laugh out of the sentiments of "if it's my time, it's my time". I feel the same way. Now, my SIL won't get on a plane for anything - he says he sure doesn't want to be at 30,000 ft. when it's the pilot's time to go!

Back is the safest.
If you are talking about a nose dive at very low altitude, maybe. I recall a few incidents where those in the middle seemed to have survived with better chances that those in the front or back...

In fact, recall the accident of a chartered, small plane in the Andes over twenty years ago where the ones in the back were the first seats ripped out upon impact...

But I always prefer to sit in the front, to get out faster.

No. I'm talking overall, on average. I'm not talking about anecdotal scenarios.

I've been on somewhere around 70 planes of all different shapes and sizes just this year and there's no perfect answer to the question. My preference depends on the type of plane, the make up of my party, etc. Other than noise, I've never noticed much difference in the "ride" from seat to seat.

On an MD-80, for example, you have two seats on one side of the aisle and three on the other. Also, the engines are in the back so the seats in the last couple of rows can be very loud. With a party of two or a party of four, I prefer two consecutive rows in the two side. Everybody then gets a window or aisle seat. Rows 20 and 21 are exit row seats, so you get a bunch more leg room, which is nice, but those seats are usually reserved for frequent fliers and you can't sit there with kids. Also, with kids I prefer to sit farther up front so you can get off of the plane faster.

A 757, on the other hand, has three seats on each side of the aisle, which calls for a different strategy. Also, the engines are under the wings so the back isn't as loud. Other planes may board in the center of the cabin, instead of the front, so the easy on and off rows are likely to be different.

My advice, therefore, is know the specific equipment you're flying and what the most important things are for you, then determine where is the best place to sit. Unfortunately, your options are sometimes very limited so it doesn't really matter.

I think I read in Protecting the Gift that sitting by the wing is the most dangerous place on the plane - because the engines are nearby.

We'll be in a first-come-first-served seating on our flight tomorrow...is there really any safer place on a plane than another?

My theory on the safety issue is that any difference is so small as to be meaningless. The issue with the engines and the wings may be accurate, but not all planes have that engine set up. MD-80s, RJs and others have the engines located on the back by the tail.

Do you know what type of plane you'll be on? My experience with first-come, first-seated carriers is that the most likely equipment is a 737. In that case, you'll have three seats on each side of the aisle. The engines are under the wings, so take that into consideration if it's a concern.

The size of the difference is very-much related to how much you value your own life.

While that is probably true, if you have any trepidations about living through a plane crash, it is best you stay grounded.

::yes:: ......I agree Gail.

My favorite spot on an airplane all depends on the circumstance of my trip. I always prefer an exit row, but whether it's in the front or the back depends on whether I've checked luggage or not. We fly ATA and it's typically a stretch 757. There is a great exit row in the very back of the plane, with so much room in front of you that you could have a party! If I've checked luggage, I like to sit back there because there is no hurry to get off the plane anyway. Whenever I've flown in that row, I've always had to still wait for my bags when I get to baggage claim, so why rush? It's true that the back can be noiser, but I sleep with a ****e noise machine so engine noise is very soothing to me. I'd rather hear that than loud people or screaming babies, which loud engines can sometimes drown out. And if you're in the back, you'll be one of the first to board, which means you should have plenty of overhead space.
When we do our weekend trips and don't check any luggage, I prefer the row 10 or 11 exit rows or else the front bulkhead. Often ATA boards the 757-300s from the middle, so it's easy off if you're in those exit rows. But you can't store your luggage in front of you in those rows, and you're usually one of the last on, so you might not have anywhere to put your bags. Of course, I'm willing to take the risk in exchange for the extra legroom.

Not sure why the word w-h-i -t -e turned into ***'s in my post above. It is supposed to say w-h-i-t-e noise machine. I hope it shows up here.

Life has always been a matter of playing the odds. Given the high value some folks place on their own lives, even with such low odds, the value is still prodigious.

LOL, with that I totally agree.
