where to recycle clothes?

I have 2 bags of clothes with stains/holes that I probably should have just thrown out slowly instead of accumulated. For some reason I thought Goodwill recycled them, but they just throw them out. Anyone know of some type of organization that recycles beat up stuff? I'm in Rochester NY if that helps. Thanks!

If you have a yahoo freecycle group in your area, you could post there, on craigslist, or a free ad in the newspaper if they have those where you live. People may want them as shop rags or to cut them up for craft/sewing projects.

You could always cut them up and use them as rags. DH uses soft cottons for waxing the car. I use rags for cleaning ect.
Also try your local animal shelter. They could use the clothes as bedding for for animals.

Check with your local recycling plant. I live in Arkansas but ours takes any/all kinds of textiles with stains, holes, etc. and recycles them. Good luck!

Just a general FYI that some Goodwills do in fact recycle them. Northern New England uses ripped clothing to make cleaning cloths that they sell. Maybe all of them don't though.

I called the local Goodwill and they said they just throw them out. Makes me mad since I'm sure there are places that recycle them. I was sure that I saw a program somewhere that stated GW used them for something..

It's been awhile, but when my mom managed a Goodwill, they sent truckloads of clothes somewhere to be turned into rags.
Maybe shipping is just too expensive now?!

When it's stuff that is in bad condition I toss it in those giant metal bins at shopping centers. From what I've heard, it is then sold by the pound. You're no worse off and maybe some group or organization can benefit (?)

Take them to your nearest Salvation Army store, and tell them that it's "rag-out" -- they'll know what it means. It gets sent back to their center for recycling and processing.

I know Disney did a thing a short while back, that they took all the old Voluntear shirts, cut them into strips and used them as stuffing for dog beds for the local pound.

Maybe talk to the pound about it.
