My dad & I are going to Niagara Falls, NY for a day-trip on Monday. He wants to pick up a bottle of rum and something else. It's my understanding that most alcohol is sold at grocery stores - is that correct? Or do we go somewhere else for it? Any store in particular cheaper than another?

In NY, you can only buy beer at a supermarket.

You would need to go to a liquor store. They will have liquor and wine.

Oh, all right. Thanks. I thought only we Canadians have a liquor store. Any idea what the name would be? Here they are called LCBO.

In, NY they are just privately owned stores. Just do a search for liquor stores in Niagara falls, ny.

NY has a minimum price for alcohol. Retailers in a competitive location sell most of their popular stuff at the minimum retail price. Retailers in a tourist area maybe not. Probably not an issue if you're just buying a bottle of rum but it might pay to check prices if you're planning on stocking up.

Firstly....if you are only going over for the day, you are not allowed to bring back any alcohol. You must be in the US for 48hr minimum. If you buy it and try to bring it back one of 2 things will happen 1)it will be confiscated or 2)you will have to pay all the taxes and fees that we pay for it in Ontario + what you paid the store so it will end up costing you more.

That said there is a great liquor store right on the corner of Niagara Falls Blvd and Military Rd. I think it's called the Liquor Supermart or something similar.

I realized that the bottle would not be allowed to come back duty free (since less than 48 hours), but I thought we would just be charged whatever the duty & taxes cost. The border could actually refuse that and take the bottle away?

Personally I'm not sure it is worth bring back a bottle of rum but my dad seems to really want to.

Thanks for the name of a store! That's not far at all from usaddress and the Walmart, so it's perfect.

You will have to pay taxes and duties-as long as you claim it, it will not be confiscated. My parents do this all the time with wine. There is a liquor store that has a penny sale twice a year on wine-buy one, get a second bottle for a penny. My parents buy two cases-and pay at the border. It averages out to an extra 4 dollars a bottle.

They absolutely can take it if they want to. How often do they excercise that right......I have no idea, but I've seen it and had it happen.

If you are asked to pay for your liquor you will also be paying for anything else that you bought that day.

Sorry-my brother is a border guard and as long as the bottle is sealed, the person is over the correct age and it has been purchased for personal use, they charge you the duty and taxes, not confiscate it. You may think someone has had liquor confiscated when they surrender it, because sometimes people would rather give up the cheap bottle than pay a wack of duty/ taxes on it.

My honest intent is not to argue but I, personally, have had a bottle of Smirnoff Vodka taken from me by CBSA. I had been away just over 1 night and had been very upfront about the bottle when I was asked if I had any alcohol.

I was willing to pay whatever fees were involved ...mainly to see if it was worth while. I was not offered the option to pay anything (they were taking the bottle)so I asked them to pour it out in my presence. I know someone else who has had something confiscated and I know people that just pay the fees and they bring home their booze.

I have not been flagged in any way as I cross approx every 6-8 weeks to shop for the day. Never once since the incident have I been asked anything other than the standard questions and this took place a few years ago.

I'll text him and see what he says, but I know that these are the rules because my parents bring over 24 bottles of wine on day trips, at least twice a year; they wouldn't risk confiscation, Kwim? Perhaps there was a rule change at some point?

I'm super curious to hear the answer from your brother. In a way I felt the CBSA people were just being A-holes but I certainly wasn't going to say anything. I would never be confrontational with any law enforcement types.
