I take everything like that in carry on except cords. (cords can be replaced not the items, too expensive. If bags go missing, these items are with us. Clothes can be picked up at Walmart cheap. (actually we take swim suit, shorts and tee with us on plane just "in case" and it has happened!)

Last time I flew, I used my classic L.L. Bean backpack as a carry-on. Into the back half went the lap-top, the camera, and all the cables, batteries, chargers, and i-pod accessories etc. The I-pod and the Blackberry were in the purse I kept on my person.

I found it's the easiest to put all the cables into one cosmetic bag and toss that right into the carry-on. It's just easier on my sanity to do it that way.

keep your electronics on you and ask them to inspect them personally. DO NOT let them go through the x-ray thing they have, it could erase all your video tapes and maybe even your digital camera pictures.

Not true. Digital images, on tape or memory card, are unaffected by the airport screening machines. You may be recalling the old days when people actually used film.

The X-Ray machine definitely will NOT erase video tapes and memory cards.

Not to argue but my brother always takes a video camera with him and just three months ago, 2 of the 4 tapes he had were erased and he knew there were things on them because he watched with his in-laws before he flew home.
What else could have done it?

I would just hate for it to happen again so any info about it would be great. :)

How about pressing the wrong button on the tape machine? User error is the most likely cause but there's no way we could know. Thousands of people go through these machines every day with magnetic media and don't have a problem. The fact that 2 of the taps weren't affected only suggests that the issue isn't with the airport screening since they all went through the machine.

I just have read a lot about it online and read about a lot of people saying the same thing (that the scanners can damage video tapes) but I have no way of really knowing. Have you gone through with video tapes and things before?

I have a bulk tape eraser left over from the days of reel-to-reel audio tapes. I have tried to erase DV tapes with this, and it has required many passes to even cause a slight problem with the tapes. Due to the high coercivity of the DV tapes, it is hard for me to believe that X-Ray equipment would be able to erase them--in fact, if they created enough of a magnetic field to do it, other metalic objects passing through would be drawn to the sides of the machine!
That said, I have been on 6 trips (12 passes through the machines) with DV tapes, and have never had a problem.

Alright wonderful. I will throw out whatever I have been read and my brother must have just messed something up who knows, but I will not worry about that anymore :) Thank you very much.

And I apologize for my false information, at the time I thought it was true but I am glad to me corrected :)

thank you

our Camcorder is digital ( hard drive) so we do not have tapes, so that is not a worry for me.

A hard drive records magnetically, just like video tape, except the magnetic substance is on a disc instead of a tape. Subjected to a strong magnetic field, a hard drive will be erased.

Always the carry on. I put all electronics and one change of clothes in the carry on. Vacation clothes are far more easily and cheaply replaced than a GPS and digital camera.

And I didn't have one single problem with the memories on my GPS or memory cards after feeding them through the scanning machine.

I may be going come May; my concern would be about my NintendoDS game cartridges and of course my memory card for my dig. camera.... Its been awhile since I've flown (July 2001).

There is nothing in the screening process that will present any threat to game cartridges or memory cards. Have a great flight.

I usually keep all my electronics camcorder and 2-3 digital cameras and cords in a seperate carry on. Just be prepared when you go through airport security to remove these things. The first time I went through security without removing them my bag was flagged. Then I got to wait while they used that special cloth to check for explosives. That's all that was in my carry-on. Just be ready to remove these items for security.
